“just what we wanted”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2013

A 60th birthday and our 20th wedding anniversary- I booked this as a surprise for my husband. We wanted a night away that felt a bit special and a little bit different....we got just what we wanted at the Inn. We stayed in the stables- a warm room, some sherry and a nice welcome, followed by some good beer and some super food. We had a walk and saw some deer up close, had a good's night rest then a tasty breakfast. I'd forgotten how lovely the area is but I won't forget our lovely night at the Inn- thank you.

Room Tip: our room in the stable block had steps up to the bathroom - no problem for us but may be for othere...

Came across this hotel via a travel zoo offer - stopped on Friday with a 3 course meal and the Saturday for a 6 course gourmet meal. The food was excellent (probably the best meal for a long, long time on the Saturday night) and the room was peaceful with a very large bed. (Room was in the annexe across the road from the Inn).

When you arrive you find a typical english country Inn - with a bar for the locals with no indication as to the quality of the food or accommodation on offer.

Plenty of country walks to work off all of the food.

We came for a one night stop via TZ - The welcome was warm, the beer was good, the food ( a lunchtime sandwich and a three course dinner ) was excellent .On a wednesday evening in mid February the dining room of this interestingly located Inn was well populated . Nothing else to say apart from '' Highly recommended for a quiet stop''

Worried after reading earlier review re Travelzoo experience - we booked our trip through TZoo and am sure the owners appreciate the fact that we like many more folk would never have even heard of Hawnby had it not been for the offer. We were made to feel very welcome and it was very cosy and friendly. The dinner was superb and breakfast was good too - very tasty sausages!! All in all a lovely trip away.

Our experience was perfect. We always go away at this time for our wedding anniversary. We found the Inn on a travelzoo offer. I'm always suspicious of deals like this, but did'nt need to be. We had a warm friendly greeting a super cosy room with every facility needed. Dinner was wonderful every course fabulous the service friendly and fabulous. The food is so amazing. Breakfast was a delight. Our stay was perfect in every way. Would certainly return with or without our travel zoo voucher.
The area is picturesque and the dining room has fantastic views.
Thanks again for a memorable stay.

We got stuck in the snow on our way and were unable to make our first night. However, this was not a problem as Kath rearranged the rooms in order for us to stay for two nights as originally planned/booked. The food was excellent as were the staff, who were only too happy to help. The scenery is absolutely stunning and is perfect for a relaxing get away or for walking. I would be more than happy to pay the full price (we had a Travelzoo voucher) and cannot express how pleased our stay was.

Room Tip: We stayed in the stables which are only across the road from the main building but were absolutely b...

Hi and thanks so much for your lovely review. You were a pleasure to look after and were so pleased that we could re-organise after a difficult time trying to get to us in such awful weather
Hope we see you again
Kind regards

Went there just after Christmas on a Travelzoo lunch deal and it was supposed to be a nice lunch for me and my son before he returned to college. I was glad to see a special deal for their 3 course lunch but would probably have gone regardless of the deal - we have been many times over very many years, are local and my family has lived in the area for hundreds of years. I booked direct with the pub and went at a time they suggested - 1.30pm.
Welcome at bar - totally empty I would add - was just about polite; landlord seemed bemused by us though what could be unusual about parent and son am not sure. Showed us through to dining room with sarcastic politeness and it carried on in that vein throughout.
Food was good; dining room just clearing from a large family shooting party.
Clearing is the operative word here. AS SOON AS PARTY HAD GONE landlord and waitress - who later could barely be bothered to get our dessert, scowled when serving us and did not bother to ask if we needed more drinks, coffee afterwards etc - clattered tables, chairs, pots and cutlery all around us with the waitress occasionally stopping to stand and stare at us but with no regard for anything we might want. Landlord barely polite when paid - not bothering with usual 'everything ok' routine etc
Menu had many exclusions or extras payable for Travelzoo deals; in all, why bother to try to attract more punters at a reduced rate if you just want to treat them like sh1t.
Last word on this - what WAS their problem in dealing with another pre-booked 2 for lunch after a busy party had just gone, what was wrong with a local mum and her urbane PhD son coming to lunch, and what on earth is their business approach if they decide to participate in a national meal deal and then hate every minute of serving it and the people who dare to take up the offer
Get a grip - the area needs pubs like this but don't alienate the punters.

I have read your review over and over again. I am quite disturbed by your apparent bad experience with us. Although I am not disputing what you have written I find it quite amazing to have such an awful review when we have loads of other very positive reviews from those using travel Zoo and those who have found us without travel Zoo. I find a lot of your comments very exaggerated and take great exception to the bad language you have used in the review. Although these sites are supposed to help the general public and establishments I find yours quite unhelpful. I stongly believe that people who think they are having a bad experience should express their opinion at the time and give the establishment chance to rectify any problem. Using awful language and being so derogatory is simply no help to anyone
And my final comment If you have used us loads of times and are 'local' you will know that Dave and I have had the business and been very successful for 13 years, you don't achieve this if you are rude and have rude staff
