“Thumbs up for the new chef.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2012

We had dinner in April. Have been regulars diners and residents for the last few years although almost a year since last visit. Understand the a new chef is in charge and so we were keen to try out ! We have always been highly satisfied with the service and quality of food and our most recent visit was no exception. Loved the little bread rolls- especially the olive one! Starters were Goat which were delicious - liked the bit of crunchiness provided by the hazel nut! The mains of Lamb and Sea trout were equally good but we only had room for coffee. Portions sizes were fine - it is rare that we manage three courses anywhere! For us,Kath and Dave have got it just right whilst always striving to make improvements. It's always a treat for us to go there- relaxing atmosphere, beautiful place,an absolute stress buster !- in no doubt that we will continue to visit!

Room Tip: If able to choose, try to get room in main hotel- first choice would be one of rooms to the left at...

Stayed for 5 nights just before Easter, and really enjoyed our time here..

Hawnby village is beautiful, and the Inn is on the hill overlooking the valley, it's only 10 to 15 mins from Helmsley, but it feels like you are really in the countryside here.

The atmosphere is exactly what you'd expect from a country Inn in the Moors, welcoming, homely, not too fancy, and not pretentious.

The bar is cozy, there is a great sofa for relaxing on, the beers were well kept, and i'm told by the g/f the wine was very nice.

There is a file of numerous local walks kept for guests to read, plenty of copies of the local OS maps to borrow (we borrowed one each day - they came in handy), and it's no bother if you want anything photocopied to take with you.

We stayed in the Jade room which had a lovely view out over the valley. Bottles of water were provided every day, wonderful hot shower (very welcome as it snowed on the Wednesday), airing rack in the bathroom for wet kit, and the all important big comfy bed - our only comment on reflection (and it is a small one) was the pillows were a little hard.

Breakfast was tasty, from the full English to the Eggs Benedict, and Salmon with Scrambled eggs. There was also a buffet with Weetabiix, Alpen, fruit etc. if you wanted something lighter.

On those nights we ate in the Inn, the food was spot on, and reasonably priced. Hearty local meals which went down well and filled us both after a long day walking on the moor (recommend the lamb).

Somewhere we would both be happy to go back to next time we are in N.Yorkshire.

Have just had Sunday lunch, glad we booked as it was very busy. The Goats chesse starter was beautiful, the Lamb and Beef were both cooked to perfection - rare in the middle. Service was very good, not rushed, very nice relaxed atmosphere. would definitely go again. A bit more expensive than usual, but considering where it is it is worth every penny

Had dinner in March. Menu limited. Ordered fish. For £15 I got some mashed potato, a little cabbage on top, a small piece of fish on top of that and an egg. Dessert was apple and rhubard crumble. No sign of apples but a bit of watery rhubard with a very sparing crumble on top was £6. Left the table hungry after a 3 course meal. Will not be back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We stayed here on a weekend break to North Yorkshire and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
The first night, the Inn was hosting the local Pheasant Beaters dinner and as a result was very busy, but that didn't mean a drop in standards. The food was exceptional and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room was "Jade" and was very clean and comfortable with an amazing view down the valley. The whole experience was probably made even better by the weather as it was the hottest weekend of the year so far.

I could go back right now as it is snowing AGAIN!

Just back from a wonderful 4 day stay. Room comfortable and clean with a welcome decanter of sherry and bottles of water in the room each day - a nice touch. A reasonably well stocked bar with well kept Yorkshire Ales. Food excellent on all days with a good choice at breakfast to set you up for a day in the hills. The Lamb chops on the final night were some of the best and well cooked (nice and pink and juicy) chops I have ever eaten in a restaurant. Nice touches to the meals such as a flower stalk of wild garlic on one dish and wild garlic flowers scattered in the mushroom and blue cheese soup show the chef to have imagination and interest in local ingredients. For the quality, the meals are very reasonably priced. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Interestingly the visitors comments in the book at reception were largely from people making return visits, always a good sign. This was our first visit but it will not be our last.

Room Tip: We stayed in the stable annexe over the road, slightly querky room with its ' own door to the ou...

I largely concur with the other positive reviews generally so I won't repeat the same thing.

However...

Our room ("Rose") was disappointing.
Good points - it was reasonably clean, had a really comfy bed and powerful shower. It was in dire need of modernisation throughout the bedroom and ensuite - so much so that it was hard to take seriously !

All part of the charm I suppose but I do hope they invest in a room refurb as it's a lovely place to stay and we would love to come again.
