“poor value for money”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

we stayed at this hotel from 26th july-28 july 2013,the hotel looked excellent on the internet but when we arrived and booked into our rooms they were very basic, having prepaid for meals the breakfast was fine, the evening meals were of very poor standard other guest complained, the meals on the bar menus were a lot better, so I would advised not to pre book your meals, the food was under cooked, other guests were noise during the night, the rooms were clean, but I
would say premier inn rooms and places are a lot better to stay in. the grounds are good but there is not a lot to do you need a car to get about,if you want any sort of entertainment you need to travel to the nearest pubs or towns the taxi fares are not cheap.as York is 15 minutes away.

Room Tip: all rooms are the same

When I was looking at hotels in the area I was impressed by the photos of Burn Hall and therefore booked 2 nights for ourselves and another room for our friends. We were expecting decent rooms with character especially as the rooms cost £188 for 2 nights and this did not include breakfast.

We arrived and were pleased with the first glimpse of the hotel. After we parked the car and saw the accommodation blocks at the back of the old building we started to have doubts about whether we had made the right choice. The accommodation blocks reminded me of my halls of residence from over forty years ago. Some of the windows had cheap net curtains at and others didn't even have any nets for privacy.

Checking in was efficient and the staff throughout the hotel were friendly. Both of the rooms that we booked were in the very basic accommodation extension to the original building. The room that we had was so tiny that the bed was against the window on one side and had about 20 inches between it and the wall on the other side - very compact! Certainly not what I was expecting for the price we paid. The TV didn't work and the shower temperature kept changing. The only way to run a bath was to put the shower head into the bath to fill it up. The bed, however, was comfortable. The furnishings were sparse - only one chair in the room. Our room overlooked the back of the kitchen with the bins and two other walls of windows from other parts of the accommodation extension. Could have been in a Premier Inn or Travel Lodge and paid a fraction of the cost!

Anyway, on to some of the better parts of this review. The front garden was very pleasant and it was nice to sit outside in the late afternoon and enjoy the sunshine and a glass of wine! We ate at the Richardsons Restaurant both nights and were very impressed by the food. The service was good and although the food selection wasn't very wide, all of the meals were well prepared. (The calamari was very rubbery - wouldn't recommend that).

If the website for the hotel had stated that the vast majority of the rooms were situated in an extension to the original building and that the rooms were compact and simply furnished, then we would not have been so disappointed in the accommodation. Having said that, we would have looked elsewhere for a hotel which had more comfortable rooms!

Spent two nights at the Burn Hall Hotel, found the staff very friendly and helpful.Especially Martha and Adam in the restaurant and the girls at reception. Must congratulate the chef on the food which on both nights was excellent and puts some better known restaurants to shame.Good location, easy acess to york, even by bus if you drive one mile to Huby.Lovely little Yorkshire villages in the area.We have already indicated at burn hall ,that we will be back. I have only given an average rating for sleep quality, as we had someone above us who was noisy until three am. However , this is not a criticism on the hotel, as you get idiots everywhere.

We booked on the £69 dinner bed and breakfast offer for two. For that we got a delicious 3 course meal with ample choice. A comfy room and a buffet breakfast. The hotel was very clean and staff polite. For the price we paid, you could not expect anything more. The only downside is that we left about a stone heavier due to the amount of food we ate!!

Update 25/7/13. I am amazed some reviews on here have actually got a response from the hotel. We have contacted them twice with no acknowledgement. We then went to the people we booked through. Finally yesterday we got a refund for 1 night an additional voucher from the booking agency and a letter saying they were refunding the hotel still had not responded to them either! Don't book to stay here and expect any quality of any kind !!! B Checked out after 1 uncomfortable night. Had paid for 2 nights dinner b&b in advance. Hotel did not even ask why we were leaving early!! Room was small. Bed rock hard. Nowhere to sit except on the uncomfortable bed. Asked for another room as our wedding anniversary. Told full and could have one next night. However it was so uncomfortable the first night that would rather write off cost than risk a second night. It's good point was it was clean. The hotel looks beautiful from the website and the grounds are lovely. However it is so basic in the rooms with what must be the cheapest mattress going. I have NEVER checked out if a hotel early before but this us no place to celebrate a wedding anniversary. Would never recommend this hotel.

I have stayed twice at this hotel, with parties of four or more, its very clean and well managed, the food is good value, handy location for York and Thirsk, and easy to find.
you will not find better value anywhere north of York, its on my call again list,
