5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2013

Was lucky enough to spend the night at his beautiful luxury hotel in August 2011 following a truly unforgettable wedding. This hotel is In really picturesque settings, whole surroundings inside and out are simply lovely. My boyfriend and I stayed in a standard double and it was a beautiful, comfortable, very generously sized room with walk out balcony, lovely modern bathroom, all the amenities you need. Fantastic views and all round experience :)

Matfen is a converted country hosue that has a great hall for event and beautiful original rooms for melas and drinks.
This is not a wheelchair friendly place.
Main downside was the long walk up and down stairs and corridors to get to rooms unless you are on the front of the building.
The pool is quite nice but small and the gym is great with good up to date equipment.
Overall a nice quiet place to stay on the outskirts of a small village of Matfen = two pubs and one village shop.

Room Tip: Always ask for a front facing room. They may cost more but will be worth the view and the extra spac...

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to post a review on our trip advisor website, following your recent stay at Matfen Hall. I am pleased you enjoyed our leisure facilities during your visit.

Although we are a country house hotel, we do have a more modern wing to the hotel, where a lift and bedrooms are available for full wheelchair access, should they be required.

Thank you again for your comments and I hope you will be able to join us again soon.

Yours sincerely

Our stay at Matfen Hall was lovely, the staff are really helpful from the moment you enter the hotel. We arrived early around 1ish that afternoon and was taken straight to our room, a nice surprise. (Seen as check in was normally 3pm). We had lunch in the conservatory, mine reminded me of my stay in Tuscany last summer, even though its the midst of winter...good wine too.
My spa treatment was wonderful, the best hot stone massage I have ever had. The pool area was busy and noisy, not to my liking, also it's the only spa pool where you have no bar service, as no drinks are allowed around the pool, only water. Well we have had a lot of spa weekends and they may need to change the way they think on this one, its not good going for a spa day and spending a lot of time around the pool with no choice of drinks, it would be nice to be able to get a smoothie or a glass( plastic of course) of bubbly being a special occasion or not...also jugs of water and fruit may be needed for guests around the pool so you can help yourself. Just a thought!
Evening meal was excellent, drinks and service was very good. The beds are so comfortable but The air conditioning didn't work and was far too hot through the night. Breakfast was very nice, but have had better. Overall we did enjoy this hotel and would love to return soon x keep up the good work. X

Spent a night at the hotel in midweek with bed, breakfast, evening meal and afternoon tea and its got to be said that it was very, very good. The room we stayed in (in the old part of the hotel) was huge with the en-suit probably bigger than my living room at home!! However, there was a lot of stairs (both up and down) to get to it from reception. The bed was huge and extremely comfortable. All the food, from Afternoon Tea to Breakfast was stunningly presented and tasted great. There was a couple of minor issues .....the hinge on the wardrobe door in the room was warped which meant you had to battle to get into it and also to close the door. The dressing gown which was provided had a missing belt loop. The email stated VERY clearly that jeans were NOT allowed during evening meals.....this WASN'T upheld. We had the incorrect bill posted under the door the following morning. Granted, the bill was corrected before we settled it, but the question remains, Why and How did it happen! These are all minor details but they are the details that separate the very, very good hotels from the excellent hotels. Special mention to the Spa!! Very nice. It was particularly busy when we went. It appears that the Spa is open to people other than guests. So a couple of families use the pool with small children. As we have 2 at home, we didn't mind it. However, if your going to the Spa for a quiet getaway, I would advise you to go during school time. Overall, a very pleasant stay with very nice staff and stunning food.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the "Old Part" of the hotel. They are huge and full of character.

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments on our trip advisor website. It was lovely to read how much you enjoyed your recent stay with us, in particular your dining experiences and the Spa & Leisure facilities.

Your room was allocated in the older part of the house, hence the number of stairs, however we do have lift access for any guests who would be unable to cope with the stairs and allocation of rooms can be made accordingly for this. With regards to your comments about the hinge on the wardrobe door, I have asked my maintenance manager to review this and I apologise for any inconvenience caused to you.

Whilst we do have a ‘no jeans / trainers’ policy in our main Restaurant, this can prove difficult to uphold. I am sorry that the incorrect bill was given to you – this was a careless ‘human error’ mistake and whilst dealt with before your departure, I agree should not have happened in the first place. My reception team, also pass on their apologies to you.

Thank you again for your comments, I do value all feedback and I hope I have the opportunity to welcome you back to Matfen Hall in the near future.

Yours sincerely

We has Sunday lunch at Matfen as an extended family celebrating two 40th birthdays. The young lady looking after the restaurant was lovely as were all the waiting staff. It was a great atmosphere and especially good to feel relaxed with a baby and toddler in tow. We didn't at any point feel worried about having children which can so often happen when dining out. The food was gorgeous - the bread was especially delicious. We had a bit of a mix up with our main courses and ended up with beef covered in mint sauce which was interesting! The staff offered us free wine which was a lovely touch but we didn't take. Desserts were also good - my apple pie was homemade and delicious. My poor dad was charged for 11 meals by mistake instead of 6 so got a bit of bill fright. At £22.95 for lunch it's not for every Sunday but we will certainly visit again.

Had a beautiful relaxing stay here. Wonderful countryside and peaceful location. Stayed in the higher level type of room (Number 01) and was amazing. So much space and beautiful design and décor. So relaxing and simply gorgeous. Spent the afternoon in the pool and leisure facilities which were as good as expected. The team at dinner were very friendly and the food delicious. It was bitter cold outside so the seats near the windows were less popular and comfortable. Great local steak and local lamb and delicious crab & scallop lasagne as a starter. After dinner drinks at the fireplace ensured a restful night. Breakfast menu does not disappoint either. Enjoy

Room Tip: Buy the best room type - its worth the extra

Matfen Hall Sunday 17th 2013Wedding Celebration ! - in a word "awesome" .
The sun rose ...the scene was set ..the bride serene , the reading read , the other sobbed , the promises made , the rings exchanged , the register signed , the breakfast consumed , the speeches made , the laughs guffawed , the tears shed , the " black and white " army arrived , the music played the army danced , the night passed , the memories stowed , the sun set ... Thank you for all for making it happen .......Finally ! A & M

To all the staff at Matfen Hall thank you for a truly amazing weekend , every guest loved the setting , the food ...the weather - thank you Victoria ! Special thanks to Clare who coped with all the exhuberance and late running , even a toilet break in the middle of the speeches as we all had so much to say - you did a great job ! We will be back , already booked in Feb 2014 for our anniversary and Matfen is now well and truly endeared to our hearts ! x

Message to any couple thinking of having a wedding at Matfen Hall in the future - Do it ! The Great Hall rivals anything across the NE for a ceremony - beautiful ! The flow of the rooms for all wedding purposes is seamless - The Great Hall , The Terrace Room , The Sir Edward Bar and for a great evening party The Vault . People circulated , conversed , ate , danced , drank and eulogised about the venue .

Matfen stole the hearts of many guests , family members and the 2 of us for sure .

The food was excellent , the staff courteous , effecient and skilled and although they cannot guarentee the weather , if you get lucky like we did - 2 and a half days pure unbroken sunshine there is no better place to be .

Matfen is a unique combination of the old , traditional ,(wedding guests get exclusive use of the East Wing)and the modern , Spa , consevatory etc .. we even managed a quick bash around the nine hole par 3 the day before .

The Queens Head a short distance away does lovely food if you fancy a quick run out , Corbridge and The Valley Indian is only 10 miles away and we indulged in both - thanks to the services of Terry at Swift Travel Minibus - cheers Terry

The perfect weekend we would not change a thing !

Thank you Matfen Hall - see you soon
Andrea & Mark xxx
