“A great english pub inn”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2007

We were not sure where we would stay the night we were in this area and were more than pleased to find this little inn right where we needed it. I was hoping for authentic and found it here.

The pub takes up most of the ground floor and check in is near the back. We were given a nice size room for three in a newer building out back. There was nothing extravagant about this place, but we thought it was great. The room was clean, the beds comfortable, the bathroom adequate.

We ate dinner in the restaurant and breakfast the next morning and enjoyed the atmosphere, the food and the staff.

If needing a cheap nights stopover enroute to Cornwall like we did, then this place is ideal as long as you don't expect any frills.
The room was very basic but had everything that was needed and was clean. Breakfast was lovely and the evening food we could not fault also. Staff were friendly and helpful. Was nice to spend the evening there with a few drinks and some good food, especially after a long drive. All in all good value for money.

Useless incompetent unwelcoming staff. Noisy and uncomfortable room. Food ok. Nice building.

Stayed here in Feb 2006.

Very cheap off internet
Nice old building
Nice pub area with open fire
Food & drink quite good and reasonably priced
Room was clean with nice clean fluffy towels and sheets

Useless incompetent staff – not one word of welcome when we arrived, just a non-English speaking youth frowning at reservations book as our names weren’t listed. Then he just walked off for ages to get help. Then when his manager turned up he too totally ignored us and shook his head looking at the book. It was over 5 minutes before anyone spoke to us. Felt like walking out again. I’ve never had such a horrible reception.
The non-English speaking waitress was useless in the restaurant too. We were sat in front of her nose for fifteen minutes before I eventually had to get up to order. Our bottle of wine was hurriedly put on the table already opened and we had to pour it ourselves.
The bed in the room was really springy, noisy and uncomfortable, and the noise of the traffic on the main road and the saniflow from the toilet kept us awake all night.
Next day they tried to charge us more for the room – despite me handing them the reservations confirmation with price on. And they couldn’t confirm if the internet company had already charged me or not. And they tried to charge us for breakfast at £7.95 which we didn’t have and it says its only £5 on the internet too. We went to McDonalds.
I would never go back again and would recommend you go to the Travelodge a few miles further down the A303.

I went to the sparkford inn with low expectations considering it was an old building and my stay cost £35 for the night. I was however quite pleased the room was warm & spacious and pleasently decorated and clean.
The rooms do need to be checked a bit more though - a lightbulb in our lamp wasn't working the curtain was hanging off its rail and wouldn't draw properly and the remote control for the tv was broke as the batteries were leaking and it had left a nice patch of acid all over the bed.
The staff were pleasent and friendly.
The bathroom was a little on the small side the entrance to the shower was facing a wall with only about a two foot gap to squeeze into it! The shower was also poor hardly any water came out of it at all. But it was again clean and nice fluffy towels were provided. The rooms upstairs I would not reccomend for elderly people there is a door halfway up some very steep and narrow stairs which is badly positioned - easy to loose your footing when your trying to open the door a go onto the next set of steps (a trip to A&E was required beacause of this!)
Good car parking is provided and the inn was easy to find. Not a bad nights stay a few minor improvements could be made. Recommended if your just want a clean cozy bed for the night.
