“Needs some TLC”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2012

Was staying here due to its proximity to a friends 50th Birthday party and were very disappointed.

The first room we were given had it's curtain rail hanging off the wall, so it was back to reception to ask to be moved to another room.

We were told that the hotel was full and no other room was available, so they'd have to repair it, so rather than get ourselves ready to go out we had to wait for the repair man, who didn't really look like a proper maintenance guy. He went away, came back and then had to admit defeat.

Miraculously, a cancellation happened that very minute and a spare room became available, so we packed up our stuffed and moved, the room was very cold, but by now we were pressed for time and hurriedly got ready to go out.

On our return (probably the coldest night of the year) we returned to a bitterly cold room and could not work out the heating, looks like it was broken, it was a very old wall heater and no configuration of switch settings seemed to generate heat.

Instead we decided to go to bed to keep warm. The bed was dreadful and had no support, we just rolled into the middle with our heads seemingly higher than our feet, this wasn't helped by the wafer thin pillow, but by now it was very late and very cold and we just wanted to get warm in bed.

We also found that the toilet did not flush and have no idea how they would repair it as the cistern was behind a tiled wall with no service panel.

On a positive note, the breakfast was OK.

On checking out we were going to tell them about the problems with the room, but we weren't even asked "how was our stay" so decided to just call it a day and get out of there.

Have to admit that the hotel wasn't expensive and would have given it a good review if there had been no faults in the room, even though the decoration is tired, we didn't pay a lot and didn't expect a lot, but sorry, curtain rails, heating and toilets that work are expected at any price.

Stopped her on business for one night and the Hotel met my needs for the money paid. Front staff were courteous and the stay included free WiFi. The room was nice and clean and despite being near an entrance door was suprisingly quiet. I did not eat in the restaurant as I went out for an evening meal so cannot comment on the food, I also left before breakfast.

Twenty-six of our Dudley Teacher Training College 1956-1958 guests enjoyed an excellent three-course dinner at a reasonable cost on the second night of our stay at the hotel in October. Also very reasonable was our bed and breakfast group rate. The accommodation and food generally was excellent. The staff were very friendly and efficient. The hotel was appropriate for us as it was built around an 1838 elementary school.

Room Tip: There are only a few steps to the ground floor rooms.

Stayed 2 nights for business purposes. The hotel offers nothing outstanding and there are probably better places to stay in the local area.
The rooms are ok although they feel a little dated.
Breakfast was nothing special and I can't comment on the restaurant as I went elsewhere!

The hotel is certainly in a good position, plenty of parking and large. However, the restaurant is an old school room of some charm but adjacent to an elderly conservatory which is the main dining room, cheerless is a charitable description. The accommodation block is 25 years old and has not been updated, drab decor, no lift to upper floors, dated bathroom, cheap bed etc etc it just needs a facelift. The bar area is a bit odd, more like a pub bar and not really hotel standard. The night I was there the bar staff were still serving an already very drunk guest. Evening food was mediocre, breakfast all a bit haphazard due to the lack of attention given to her duties by the morning staff. It's not for me this kind of hotel.

I have to state that for me the best western is probably the definitive middle of the road hotel. There is nothing particularly harrowing, but nothing really of preeminence. Upon arrival and then making our way through the car-park on a Wednesday evening, my accomplice was leered at and whistled at by contractors and workmen drinking cider and smoking pipes round a van. On entry, heading our way through the mass of doors, mirrors and bends felt like a quick trip through the crystal maze. The room is fairly pleasant, although the selection of towels were small, and the tea and coffee packs were mere rations to see us through the night. The showers are a problem, as they leak everywhere; the curtain does little to shield the rest of the restroom from the aquatic purge. Breakfast was warm and filling, and the staff were prompt.

I stayed with my partner and daughter for a couple of nights recently after purchasing a Groupon voucher. The location of the hotel is on a lovely, quiet and quaint residential road.
But the hotel itself is tired and dated and stuck in an 80's time warp.
The room i stayed in was in fairness clean and tidy but the general decor was dark and dingy and just in need of some basic tlc. The room was ensuite and the bathroom although dated was clean. I would advise the hotel however to ditch the plastic/rubber stand mats - they're not hygienic and look like something my gran used to have in her bathroom.

The room doors had that annoying tendancy to slam shut on their own so the early risers leaving at 6am sadly woke everyone else up as they left. But needless to say we were comfortable and for the money paid wasn't bad value - I wouldn't pay full price though!

The breakfast set up was fine - although i would advise them not to use cheap cereal and to have more of a fruit selection. The cooked breakfast was plenty of choice but just a little greasy and the eggs could have done with being cooked a little longer.

We had a meal the second night we stayed and I have to say I thought it was lovely and not too badly priced either alonmg with the desserts.

All in all its not a bad place - it just needs bringing upto date and slightly below the standard I expect of Best Western hotels. I thought the staff were lovely and seemed happy to accomodate requests.
This is a hotel with a lot of potential its just not been tapped into by Best Western - shame really!
