“Fantastic gardens & an interesting house”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2013

Just had our second visit here in the last few months & thoroughly enjoyed it. The gardens on a sunny summer day are wonderful with plenty of secluded spots for a picnic or just a sit down. Summer in England doesn't get much better than this. A real Alice in Wonderland feel to the collection of topiary. At the moment refreshments are served from a nice little van but a new café is under construction. The house is well done as ever & the walled kitchen garden is a nice bonus.

Combine a visit here with a trip to the other NT property just a couple of miles down the road, Baddesley Clinton.

“House and gardens”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2013

A good car park, with building work nearby to form new toilets and visitor centre.

The main road goes through the grounds and you cross the road to the house. We had a very informed talk from a NT guide outside the house who pointed out details of the house and gardens. Photos ok inside the house but avoid flash.

The early house was extended to include a ballroom. The usual good quality of guides we have come to expect from the NT - informative and interested in their subject, without being pushy. See the fireplace (salvaged from a Stratford pub) where they 'imagine' Shakespeare may have stood with pint in hand!!

The gardens are very good with a Yew tree area leading to a mound with a spiral path - find the meaning of this area.....

“Lovely house with an interesting history.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2013 via mobile

This place is a real gem and the leaflets don't do it justice. It has a fascinating history and is set in the most beautiful gardens.

The kitchen gardens and soon-to-be completed cafe will add to it's charms.

“Nice house, but go for the gardens”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2013

Recently visited a lot of National Trust properties, and this house was small but beautiful with its wide oak beamed floor and panelled walls and tapestries. The guides weren't as knowledgeable as some of the houses we've been in and one was positively abrupt! The best part of this visit were the gardens - would go here alone just for the splender of them. The yew garden was spectactular and make sure you go to the top of these gardens and walk to the top of the spiral topiary. I thought we were walking in a circle but ended up walking up to the tree at the top and sat under the tree in the shade overlooking the garden. Then walked through the orchard, round the lake and back to the kitchen garden which is full of fruit trees, vegetables and flowers.

“Nice house, beautiful gardens.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2013

It doesn't have shed fulls off trinkets. jewellery, fine pictures etc.. but it's quaint; with massive oak floors, wall panels and lots and lots of tapestry's. The room guides are the usual National Trust sort, equally ready to give you all you ask for and yet reserved enough just to give you a prompt.

It's the gardens that excel, both the formal flower beds and the excellent topiary but for me the biggest delight was the kitchen garden all maintained by informative volunteers and ready to serve up home grown produce for the new visitors centre and cafe which was rather optimistically said to be opening in 2012. An absolute delight.
