“A bustling and friendly place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2012

This is a consistently good place for an appetising meal. Friendly staff know many diners through regular visits and everyone connected to the business cares about the quality of the meal and the whole experience. The two beamed rooms are especially inviting in winter when two fires are appreciated by customers. A civilised place where banter is often high on the menu and although prices reflect the quality of the cooking no one could question the value.

“lunchtime visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012

We visited Panettis on friday 2nd november and as usual thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was excellent, I had salmon and spinach inside filo pastry from the specials board, served with two excellent sauces and my husband had mixed fish canneloni. This is a real gem of a bistro where the staff are always pleasant, this time we were overseen by Veronica and it is obvious all the staff enjoy working here, the service is efficient and friendly. It speaks volumes when on a routine friday lunchtime the restaurant was full to capacity and by the way the sticky toffee pudding is to die for.

“We keep returning”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2012

This is definitely one of my families favourite eating places...we love everything about it....lots of choice so we all get the sort of thing we want and really pleasant atmosphere. My daughter particularly likes the sea bass.We like to eat here about once a month and we travel from Sheffield just for the joy of the experience. My eldest daughter and family who live in Nottingham will ring and say shall we meet for lunch at Panettis as if it were just around the corner!

“wonderful find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2012

We were recommended this cafe by the tourist information office one Friday lunchtime and it was great. We only wanted a light lunch and were thinking we'd chosen the wrong place when we walked in and saw people having hearty lunches, but there was plenty of choice. I had a bacon sandwich which came with a lovely garnish of fresh salad and sliced apple. My husband had poached eggs on muffins with crispy bacon. Both dishes were delicious and the service was excellent. The tea was great too and the staff were attentive. Highly recommend it.

“A little odd”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2012

Where to begin? It is hard to know how to describe or rate our experience in this “cafe bistro”. We both had two different courses that ranged from the rather good to the utterly bizarre!
My starter was baked aubergine. This was a couple of slices of aubergine in a creamy and garlicky tomato sauce. The dish was what might be expected in a pub or bistro: Something that could be prepared well in advance and heated rapidly. It was tasty enough and, to be honest, with the addition of some parmesan made a good introduction to the meal. Mrs T had melon and Parma ham. This was precisely as described. Slices of Parma ham with two large slices of melon cut into chunks. Not a great deal of finesse but at least it was honest and, as Mrs T is very partial to both, she was very happy.
I chose from the specials board - sea bass on a bed of crispy vegetables in a cream sauce. With this came a traditional dish of vegetables – potatoes, green beans, carrots and broccoli. Given the vegetable bed on which the fish was rested, much of this seemed superfluous. However, the main event turned out to be rather good. The sea bass was well cooked with a nice crispy skin and the whole thing was well seasoned and presented. In short, it worked rather well as a bistro meal.
On the other hand, Mrs T’s main course was, to say the least, unusual. She chose goat cheese and onion marmalade tart with salad; a pub and bistro favourite and appetising enough if well done. In fact the tart was perfectly fine: Short pastry, sticky onion marmalade and melting goat cheese. Beyond that, it got a little bizarre. Surrounding the tart was what I can only describe as a fruit salad. This comprised chunks of apple and pineapple as well as grapes, strawberries and slices of orange. Perhaps as a savoury afterthought some bits of lettuce and tomato had also been inserted. A dish of chips accompanied this strange combination.
It felt as if we had visited two entirely different establishments; one providing perfectly reasonable bistro fare and the other run by someone with some skill but absolutely no idea of how to combine ingredients to form a coherent dish.
We found the service friendly and efficient and we did not so much object to the decor as some other contributors.
So, overall it was a rather odd. Maybe, on a good day if you chose the right dishes Panetti’s might be ok but given our experience, it is a bit of a lucky dip.
