“Enjoyable stay but....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2012

We booked a one night stay at a cost of £99 for two persons, dinner, bed & breakfast. When the confirmation arrived, we were a bit surprised to see there would be a "discretionary" service charge of 12.5% on food and drink which is a bit steep by anyone's standards. The full dinner was not included, only a £20 per person discount. So maybe not quite the bargain originally envisaged! However, we had a good sized room overlooking the rear of the hotel with not quite the stunning views at the front, but very pleasant nevertheless. The bedding was excellent quality and the bathroom spotlessly clean. We enjoyed a meal of duck for my husband and steak for me, which were both good. The chips were first class! However, we were a bit disconcerted when the waitress brought the bottle of wine we had ordered (from an excellent list, I might add) but this was already uncorked!! How do we know that the wine in the bottle is that described on the label if we don't see the sealed bottle presented? Luckily this was not the case, but just something that should be noted. We did notice several complaints in the dining room from other guests - wine not sufficiently chilled and a cod dish not cooked properly which does send out warning bells. However, the staff were friendly and helpful (probably bearing in mind the 12.5% service charge) but in need of some additional training. Overall we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay.

There is no doubt that the setting is the key attraction at this hotel
Unfortunately in a number of respects it otherwise misses the mark. Having received an e-mail from the Devonshire Group in August offering a reduced rate including two courses from the taster menu the offer seemed to good to miss. Whilst taking a pre-dinner drink ( Now in November) we were told that they had changed the offer and that we could eat off the main menu and we would receive a discount of £20 per person. There was no explanation as to why we had not been notified in the intervening 3 months as to a change in the arrangement. We had not either been notified that in addition a 12.5% charge would be added to the bill for refreshments taken. I have to say that there was no hesitation in reducing the final bill to the price of the original offer when complaining at the time of payment.
As for the eating experience our two starters and main courses were of good quality but were cold appearing to have been plated up sometime before serving. As a former food inspector I do not think it appropriate to serve food particularly meat with sauce/gravy on a wooden board. However attractive it may look there are inherent health risks.
. I have to say that my experiences at other Devonshire group hotels has left me with high expectations and unfortunately this one hotel falls below the otherwise high standards found.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front offer the riverside views.

we joined a family party who were staying at the hotel for a celebratory meal...we werent welcomed on arrival and when I asked if there was a cloakroom for my coat I was told there was a coat stand in the porch - as this was open to the elements and only had an old waterproof hanging on it I declined!
The food was mixed - those who had the duck had no issues as with previous reviewers, but other dishes were hit and miss - either lukewarm, late, or like mine - just not enjoyable. My cod was a fairly small tail portion ( billed on the menu at just under £20) and the skin, though meant to be pan fried was a little slimy and not crisp...the chorizo (none visible) and smoked bacon cassoulet was so salty as well as not being hot, I had to leave most of it. No one asked why.
Its a shame because this fabulous-looking little hotel should have such a lot going for it.

We stayed for a 2 night break as a result of a very tempting offer for Dinner, b&b...it was excellent! It felt like staying at a friend's house as the atmosphere within the hotel & from the staff was so warm, friendly & courteous, we hardly felt we were paying guests.
Food was superb, dining room was informal & comfortable....with excellent wines.
Views were just 'picture postcard' perfect.
Our room was comfortable, but did not have a view of the river...however that was not a problem as the weather was fabulous & we enjoyed a 5 mile walk along the River Wharf. We were privileged to also enjoy the 'local' bonfire & fireworks, from an ideal seat in the hotel, whilst enjoying a glass of excellent wine.....simply delightful...we will be back!

Room Tip: Rooms at front have magnificent views, but you may have 'traffic noise'. Rooms on 2nd floor...

We had a 2 night stay at The Fell and it was fabulous - we had a River view room with views over the River Wharf - the staff are so friendly and accommodating - we had booked to see the firework display at The Devonshire Arms and the chef cooked our evening dinner early so we could make it ! - the place a home from home feel better than a 'hotel ' and we will stay again and recommend to our friends - we have stayed at The Devonshire Arms but prefer the Fell - car parking at The Strid has changed and you may get charged even with a card from the hotel :-) !

On arrival there is a broken plastic bucket with cigarette ends just outside the front door for smokers, on the upside it is possible to lift ones eyes and take in what is a fabulous wonderful view of a beautiful part of Yorkshire. The dining room furniture is uncomfortable and most in need of reupholstering. The conservatory is relaxed and great for coffee and newspapers. My bedroom was well furnished with a great bathroom. There is no lift but the staff carried the case of a pregnant woman who was also staying as she would have struggled otherwise. The decor didn't do it for me - it seems an attempt to throw various elements together in a quirky way, but for me it missed the mark. The wood burning stove fire in the dining room is electric and not 'real' - strange for such a venue.

Breakfast was okay, the bacon excellent, but with few other choices such as yoghurt etc. Evening meal was fine, with duck cooked to perfection, although the dessert was far too sweet with no contrasting flavour to cut the sugary concoction.

We have visited The Fell on several occasions because of it's amazing views and it's elevated position.
We had our wedding ceremony and reception here on the 8th September.
It was a glorious day and the venue was perfect.
The staff cannot do enough to help and Stephan the manager is a really really nice guy. Most of our guests commented on how lovely the staff were. Nothing was too much trouble.
The food was amazing as always. There was an excellent choice for both canapes and the sit down meal with options for bacon and sausage rolls for the evening. All reasonably priced too.
The rooms are luxurious and the beds are very comfortable.
Waking up on the Sunday with a view to the other side of the valley with the mist settling was amazing.
You should consider the Fell if you are planning a wedding up to 70 guests. We looked at a few venues in the Dales but nothing compared to the class and customer service we recieved here.
Plus you get the entire venue to yourselves.
We cannot wait to visit again soon.

Room Tip: Choose one of the suites which face the river
