We used to come to this place all the time, at least 2-3 times a year. It used to be superb. Nice rooms, lovely attentive staff, smashing food from an extensive menu. It started going downhill a few years ago when the "new" owners came in. One of the first things they did was to do away with the adventurous and varied specials board menu and replace it with the ersatz modern cliched menu now common in this sort of place - you know the type - pork belly, duck breast etc etc.
The bar area is usually full of locals just drinking - nothing wrong with that of course, but the bar staff give the attitude of being extremely annoyed that you are interrupting their conversation by wanting to be served! Beer is ridiculously overpriced for bog standard ale. Whilst other staff have obviously done the training of vacuous things to say, they do it in a distracted and matter of fact way - you get the distinct impression that they don't give a damn.

We sat at the far end of the bar, near the toilets, the noxious smell from which put us off eating anything there. The downhill spiral is well & truly complete, and I would never go again.

absolute rip off price, rude and ignorant staff, very average/poor rooms
did not get welcomed by the staff and got completely ignored in the morning, breakfast was pathetic and tasteless, the room was average and overpriced, might aswell sleep on the floor

Room Tip: just go somewhere else

We booked for 1 saturday night as it was our anniversary and wanted to have a day in Whitby on the sunday. The bar area was very old fashioned but it is an old coaching inn!, the leather sofa's very comfortable. Excellent array of hand-pulled beers. So glad we decided to eat in the pub as the dining room is a little gem, excellent menu & wine list, reasonable prices & the food was superb. Very busy in the evening but it was saturday night, the waiting staff very friendly & helpful. Breakfast was plentiful & well cooked with a choice of hot food.
We had booked a junior suite and I expected a four poster bed but apparently only one room has this and it wasn't ours, so beware of the wording. We stayed in the annexe in room 22 which I believe was an old rectory and felt the room was very tired. It was painted in dark colours so felt dark & dingy. Plenty of room but furniture tired & no duvet only blankets and the bathroom was very basic with no shower (only a hand held attachment) and there were bare wires coming from the wall in the entrance. However the room was quiet and the garden outside was lovely to sit in with a drink in the sunshine.
We had no trouble parking but the car park is small.
The only other downside which threw me a little on paying the bill was the request for a tip before the card was authorised.
Kirkbymoorside is an excellent base but there is nothing much there, we had a walk around on a saturday afternoon and it was extremely quiet, the shops that were there were mostly closed.
Overall for the amount we paid - £110 I felt the rooms let it down and were not worth that amount.

Just come back from a 3 night break over the bank holiday weekend. We had a lovely time.
Our room was very spacious, spotlessly clean and exactly what I would expect for an old country pub, full of character complete with a beamed ceiling. After reading some of the previous reviews I was a little concerned that I wouldn't get a working shower but need not to have worried. Great shower (over the bath) with shower screen and perfectly adequate. No problem with size of the bath either, perfect for wallowing in.
What really makes this place special is the staff, very friendly, helpful, great sense of humour too!
We ate in the resturant on two evening, I'm a bit of a "foody " and have to say I really enjoyed the food, freshly prepared and nicely presented.
Location was fantastic, there is so much to do in this area, we were just a short drive from, York, Harrogate, and the Moors, which were spectactular, bright purple with heather. Only a short drive from the East coast too. We didn't get time to we everything so we have a good excuse to go back soon.

Overall we had a great break and couldn't have picked a better place to stay.

TIP if visiting York:-
We brought a 2 day "york pass" from the tourist information centre (next to york minister). They are £47.00 each but if you buy a map from there you get them for £42.00. Sounds like a lot of money at first but they give you entry to loads of places in and around York, you get a little guide book which will give you loads of ideas on what to do. Afterwards we added up all the entrance fees and if we had "paid as you go" we would have spent £72.00! You also get loads of vouchers with your pass which gives you discount and lots of things like resturants, tours and the York wheel.

Large contrast between Pub area and accommodation. Rooms were decent size but very tired, ceiling plaster coming away from window areas, mismatched decor and tired furnishings, poorly finished repairs like holes in tiles from old fixings filled with filler, bath too narrow for me to lay in, so I had to lay in sideways with one shoulder against the base of the bath !! no shower screen or fitting to have a shower. There is a bit of a walk to get to your room if you are right at the back of the hotel, not all that obvious, we could have benefitted from a staff member at least showing us to our room, rather than pointing in a general 'over there' direction.
The pub itself was fine, relaxed atmosphere and different seating areas, dining area also good, although breakfast was underwhelming. Staff could also be heard shouting instructions in kitchen, for example, after asking for more toast, we heard 'they want more toast' echo from the kitchen. It's not an awful place but not somewhere I would stay again, as someone has already pointed out, there is excellent potential and the location is good. For me a sub £50 per night stay rather than the £90 we were charged.
