“Great hosts and wonderful wildlife!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2013

Visited Arno and La Tropicale in April 2013 and had a wonderful time. My husband and I (we got married on the beach) wanted a "in the jungle" kind of resort and this is what we got. LOVED waking up to the howler monkey's outside our patio, something I will never forget. Arno and Alan were awesome and very friendly and gave great recommendations on things to do, such as zip lining and deep sea fishing which we did both. Served a daily breakfast of fresh fruits, juices, coffee and toast. Didn't get a chance to try Arno's cooking, but heard it's excellent. Just a short walk down to the beautiful beach. Would love to go back someday, Costa Rica is a very beautiful place with beautiful people.

It's been a month since we arrived home and by writing this we're admitting to being back to reality. This was our fourth trip to Costa Rica and each time we venture further off the beaten (Read All-Inclusive resort) path. Wanting to explore more of the Guanacaste coast we headed south from Tamarindo, through Samara to Playa Carillo. Our GPS rented from the rental car agency found La Tropicale (which in itself is amazing) with the property being exactly as we'd hoped after some internet viewing: nicely shaded with lush palm trees, too many types of fauna to list, hummingbirds, parrots, monkeys, lizards, butterflies and the ocean surf as the soundtrack. The beach is awesome and only 200 meters away at the bottom of the road.
Our cabin had a working air conditioning unit, but we didn't use it as it intereferred with the sounds of Costa Rica teaming outside! We can't stress enough: if you want to experience nature from the privacy of your own deck and chairs you won't be disappointed.
The bed was comfortable, the shower had great pressure and hot water if you wanted it. Having our own kitchenette was helpful although we didn't use anything but the fridge to keep drinks cold. Breakfast is provided with a spread of fresh fruit, cereals, jams, toast and pastries a la Francais. We enjoyed chatting with the other guests each morning and comparing stories of the previous day's adventures.
If you have experience renting a cottage in Canada or the U.S. and enjoy this type of holiday then you will appreciate La Tropicale and no doubt want to return as we will without question visit Arnaud and Allan, our excellent hosts once again.

Room Tip: They offer different size cabins depending on your size of group

My husband and I spent three weeks at this lodge and we were treated with lots of attention to our needs .Arno and Allen did all they could to make us comfortable.I celebrated my 65th birthday there and they had a special evening planned with other guests and ordered a cake ,I had a wonderful time.No it is not a five star for sure and improvements can always be made .It was the dry season so things were not lush ,but no fault of the owner.March was too hot for us but again not. Their fault.Again thanks for the friends we met and the warm welcome .

This Beach lodge is NOT Paradise but a disaster. The grounds are a mess, trash, dog feces, pipes, garden hoses, wires, uneven steps and the odor of animal urine. A safety hazard inside and out. Then you have the rooms, it would take too long to document all the problems with the rooms. I would recommend the AREA but not this "lodge".

Room Tip: several others near the Carrillo Beach area are MUCH better.

First of all thank you for your comments, you certainly got our attention!
We have been expecting such a review from you by your lovely demeanor during your stay in Costa Rica.
Your son and at the time future daughter in law picked our property for their nuptials and 24 guests.
You arrived ahead of the group and said that our property was not acceptable for your elderly mother, even threatening you would sue if she or yourself were to fall!
We then agreed that you should go stay at a neighboring property and you were fully refunded.
Funny that only you and your husband went elsewhere...
Your mom as well as the rest of the wedding party not only stayed with us for the week but really enjoyed their stay and the property including the pool.
It's a shame you do not have your mom's "joie de vivre!"
As far as the "feces" you mentioned, we have 3 dogs as well as monkeys, frogs and many other animals around that we are trying very hard to "potty" train but you can imagine that is not easy!
So it is possible that this occurred we are in nature here it is not sterile.
The comment regarding that the property was a mess with hoses, etc... all over the place we are a small property with only a couple of staff not an all inclusive with lots of staff and automatic sprinklers and it is dry season here so it is necessary to water the vegetation often.
With your special group rate of 280 USD per person for the week with breakfast included we are not an all inclusive hotel with grounds keepers and automatic sprinklers!
As for your lack of comment regarding the rooms, you were never in the rooms when you made your decision not to stay here.
When the rest of your group arrived and you tried to get them to cancel and move to a neighbouring hotel they refused you and stayed with us!
Although you mention all the hazards it's funny that you were here everyday sitting with your family at breakfast and by the pool.
It is very unfortunate that your negative attitude influenced the couple's choice of venue for their dinner. A regular restaurant with other patrons, regular table settings, etc... was your choice
We pride ourselves in doing a wonderful professional job with weddings ( food, decor, table settings, music and dancing) as you can see by our previous review.
In conclusion we believe you had underlying issues with your trip to Costa Rica and La Tropicale was the brunt of your negativity!
Thank you for your comments, if someone recognizes themselves in your comments that will help them choose another property for their stay and will also help us have a positive happy environment that we strive for at La Tropicale .
Happy positive people are always welcome at La Tropicale!!

Walking up the road from the beach you wouldn't believe what lies behind the gates of La Tropicale. Arno welcomed us with open arms, a fantastic host. He and Alan made sure we had the most wonderful time. We were there for 4 nights and stayed at the Bora Bora bungalow with private pool. We did however use the main pool by the bar with its disco lights more than our own pool! Alan and Arno cooked for us on our last night which was the perfect end to a perfect stay. It was so relaxing, which is the vibe that Arno and Alan exude. Their two macaws join you for breakfast which is served only when you're ready to get out of bed - just perfect. We have bought our own outside disco lights in their honour!

We found La Tropicale online and picked it because of the reasonable rates, proximity to the beach, and they allowed dogs. We got lucky! If you need something, Arno can help you find it! He recommended a fantastic baker for the wedding cake, a stable that could bring horses to the beach for the wedding, found us chairs to use on the beach, and bartenders for the reception. He helped us with a sound system, cooked a fantastic wedding meal, recommended a boat for a fishing charter, which bars would be great for the bachelor/bachelorette parties, and more. In addition he and Allan put up great decorations and had a beautiful table service. We spent 3 days there checking the place out the week before the wedding and 5 days there during the wedding week. My daughter's wedding was more than we could have ever hoped for. Thanks Arno and Allan! You two Rock! We will see you again! PS Have to mention the birds, howler monkeys, and other wildlife. You are in the middle of it. I've never gotten such close looks at howlers. I was within a few feet. No binoculars needed. Awesome!

Reading these latest reviews remind me of how lovely our own days at La Tropicale were, even though our holiday was over a year ago (January 2012). I must apologize that I haven't shared my review before.
It was our first trip with our 4 grown children and I struggled to find the perfect place: natural setting, close to a fantastic nearly unspoiled beach, with accommodation, not only affordable but suitable for a family of 6 without a car. I could not have been happier to find in Arnaud and his staff the most caring and accommodating of hosts. We enjoyed such relaxing moments that only such a laid-back environment could provide. We were even able to host a dinner for friends who joined us from Playa Flamingo.
It will be impossible to find anywhere else quite like this charming oasis. It looks like some changes have taken place since our trip, including the availability of meals at the main house. What a wonderful incentive... we will have to plan our return some day soon. Everywhere else truly will pale in comparison to the charming environment that is La Tropicale. No wonder we haven't been anywhere since!

Room Tip: Bora Bora is very private and spacious, with its own pool and patio.
