“Wonderful place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2012

We loved our time at Cabinas El Colibri. The room was clean and very comfortably furnished, with a lovely bathroom, hot shower and AC. We enjoyed being able to prepare some simply meals using the well-equipped kitchen. The breakfasts were delicious: eggs, frijoles, pancakes, fresh fruit juices - yum! The pool area was small but pleasant. The atmosphere was very convivial. People in different rooms exchanged greetings and chatted. Almost everyone was hispanophone except for us, so it's a great place to practice your Spanish. Roxana & Fernando were super nice and accommodating, as were Noelia and the rest of the staff. Playa Carrillo is a short walk away, and it is a lovely beach. You can walk from end to end in about 45 minutes. There are palm trees for shade, and the waves are perfect for surfing or frolicking about. We enjoyed visiting La Selva wildlife reserve. There is also yoga on the beach at 4 pm, kayak tours, and local hikes (ask Fernando where to go). We spend a day at Playa Samara (much busier and more touristy) and enjoyed ourselves but were thrilled to return to El Colibri. We stayed there 5 days and it was great! Very relaxing! In addition, the adjoining restaurant (run by the same couple) is excellent: fresh and delicious, even for a veggie like me. I relished the salad with tomato and boccocini, but their specialty is grilled meat, which my husband enjoyed.

Room Tip: Ask for the biggest room available.

I think this little hotel is a gem. It's clean, intimate, attractive, and the staff are friendly. The owners are happy to oblige if you have a question or request. I am visiting here in Nov so it is very quiet and peaceful. If you are looking for a quiet time, away from the hubbub of tourists, this is it. Samara is only 10 minutes away by bus should you be looking for variety.

Staying at Colibri was really easy and convenient. It is a small place, but it has everything we needed: clean, plenty of space in the room (our was a double bed with two bunk beds that our kids love), The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare breakfast and severals meals when we were too tired to go out. We also had breakfast in the restaurant, with good music in the morning and the view of a mountain .The pool was just ideal to come back and use in the evening after a day of beach exploring. The owners and the staff are very helpful and friendly. We felt it was the right location to explore different beaches in several different locations . Also , you can walk from the cabins to Playa Carrillo , which is such a nice beach. We feel it really was a great value and since we were a bit tired of the big resorts, it made us feel like we were at home. We definately will go back

Room Tip: If you have any problem, ask the owners to help you. They will take care of little details. We enjo...

We travelled through Panama and Costa Rica and finally settled in El Colibri for the last 10 days of our trip for a relax and unwind. It was perfect, we stayed in a apartment with kitchinette and ensuite. The room was fantastic, the staff were lovely and the on site restaurant was amazing!! Can't fault it at all. We are hoping to return again next year!

we stayed at this hotel for 3 days during a 10 day trip to Costa Rica. We stayed in one of the rooms with a kitchen and really enjoyed being able to do our own cooking. There is a little grocery store up the road that has all that you need. I also noticed that the grocery store is not as expensive as the one in Samara. In general Samara seems to be more "touristy" than Playa Carrillo. The room was basic but nice and clean and was well arranged with a nice place to store all of your luggage and all of the kitchen utensils necessary to cook. There is also a nice patio in front of the rooms that has a kitchen table, hammock and chair to relax in. We had a car and would drive down to the beach each day, so we did not mind that the hotel was not directly on the water.

The restaurant is one of the better ones in the area - but not the rooms. Off a dusty road with no views and behind the restaurant. Over priced for what you get and although many people find the owners to be lovely people we found them a bit cool. Stay there if you can't find another place, but just a night or two - once in Carrillo you can find a better place with more value. No security. Parking is just off the street and not gated. Not the friendly Tico experience you will find in many places. There was a lot of water damage in the closet in our room and that bugged me. Bit of a walk to the beach.

We stayed at this hotel for three nights in March with our two young children. It is a nice place and a good value. We stayed in a room with one double bed and two single beds. The room was pretty basic, but clean and fine with working AC and hot water. The hotel does not have an ocean view but the restaurant has a wonderful breeze. You can rent a room with a kitchen and do your own cooking which would save you a lot of money. We ate at the restaurant and it was yummy. We also ate at the Soda Tias down the street which was cheap, filling and good. Fernando and Roxanne are very nice. The beach is deserted, beautiful, and very gentle-good for young children. There are absolutely no services on the beach (like bathrooms) but there are beautiful palm trees. Carrillo the town is pretty sleepy but has what you need. There were never more than 25 people on the whole huge beach. It was like we had this gorgeous beach all to ourselves.

So I would recommend this hotel and this beach.
