My family and I spent the Chinese New Year holidays here. I chose this motel based on its good reviews at TripAdvisor. But upon arriving, I struggled to summarise this motel in one sentence. At the end, I think "A Backpacker's Hilton" is an apt description of AB Motel.
I stayed at the chalet at the beachside. The room is basic and moderately clean. The floor and bedspread felt sandy. The toilet is basic and clean but small. Aircon was slightly broken but it gave cool, comfortable air. However, there is a problem of mosquitoes. I had to use two mosquito coils (bought from the sundry shop nearby) to keep the bug population down: one was not sufficient.
One of the supposedly strengths of AB Motel is the beach, depending on which chalet you get, can be only 100 metres away. However, the beach is only to submerge your body in the sea. Forget about swimming because of the water sports. They enclosed a part of the beach for swimming but the depth goes no more than 5 feet. So swimming is definitely out. The beach, though clean, can also be crowded and noisy.
The staff is, at best, brusque. They will answer any questions you have but only just: no more, no less. Foreigners beware. I understand Malay, so I can understand when they poke fun at oblivious foreigners.
At the end, AB Motel is really for backpackers who wish to indulge in a little more in "luxury", but for others, come with low expectations and high tolerance, and AB Motel will just about be okay.
