“back to nature”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2013

Bon Ton offers a "back to nature" experience with its original "kampung" (village) wooden house; they are all different from each other, and face a paddy field. It is a wonderful experience to be there with all the cats and dogs wandering around (part of Bon Ton's profits are used to finance an animal shelter; you can go and walk the dogs, or keep a cat is your room, if it likes you). I read the "1*" reviews of Tripadvisor and was laughing a lot; yes there are flies, and gecos and birds; but that's nature! It's so great to not be surrounded by concrete buildings and chemicals.... Great job guys of Bon Ton!

Room Tip: go and walk the dogs; they will love it

A perfect Honeymoon, This Resort has everything we wanted, a lovely spot with an outdoor pool by the lagoon with coconut trees and happy staff.
The Palm Villa was fantastic, simple morning breakfast waiting in the fridge, good shower and toilet, the bed great with mosquito net and mosquito plugs. We did get perfect weather for the 6 days we were there which helped. We used the pool every morning and afternoon. Then a 5-10 minute drive down to the beaches, scooters are $25RM a day and $4RM to fill the tank... awesome. You will need a taxi to take you to the rentals.. its too hot to walk the 15-20 mins walk ;)
They make a good cocktail although we would of ordered more cocktails if the staff asked if we wanted a drink more.
Looking at the other resorts it was perfect for us.
Lots of nice cats but the don't bother you unless you want them too ;)

Room Tip: For Couples the 'Palm Villa' is One of the best!

Although Bon Ton didn't blow me away visually on first sight, its understated, weather-beaten charm grew on me with every day of our seven-night stay. It's a compact place, with a small number of traditional stilted houses overlooking a simple pool (with a lagoon beyond) and a clubhouse bar/restaurant, all within a few seconds' walk of each other.

We stayed in the 120-year old Palm, which had been found by the owners, dismantled and rebuilt in its new location. Although some of the houses have outdoor facilities, Palm's are all inside, including a handsome wooden bathtub and a corner shower, where the water simply drops through gaps in the floorboards and onto a pile of rocks below the house - simple and effective. The house was spacious and characterfully decorated, with a very high roof and wooden shuttered windows all the way along each wall, that let in plenty of light during the day.

Some small niggles re. the room: a solid headboard would have been more comfortable for sitting and reading, and the TV (DVDs only, free hire from reception) was oddly placed next to the bed, in a position that made for awkward viewing. Although the army of cleaners did a great job each morning, the bath tub wasn't 100% spotless on arrival. My sore bum also missed the comforts of upholstered furniture, although cushions were admittedly plentiful...

Bon Ton's sister resort Temple Tree is just next door, with two more pools and a colonial-style clubhouse restaurant, where your meal can be charged to your Bon Ton room. Between the two, there's a rescue centre/sanctuary for dogs and cats, under the same ownership. The cats have a free run of Bon Ton, and at Palm we had a cluster of around four "regulars", including the famous marmalade Skippy, the centre's inaugural resident.

The dogs did make a bit of noise from time to time, but it was no big deal. You're also fairly close to the airport, so expect a small amount of noise from passing aircraft, but it's a quiet airport and the planes aren't big, so again this wasn't a problem at all.

Pantai Cenang beach is just up the road, via a short, cheap taxi ride (easily booked) or a 15 minute walk (not recommended, as there's no pavement until you get nearer and it's a fairly busy road). There's a busy strip of restaurants, shops and bars - nice to have them all near, but even nicer to leave them all behind once you're back at Bon Ton, which is when you really start to appreciate the tranquillity!

The food at Bon Ton's restaurant was consistently excellent, and one of the best reasons for staying there. Tasty Malay cuisine with plenty of fresh seafood (I loved the garupa in ponzu sauce) and some terrific mixed tasting platters. Desserts are a speciality - try the palm-sugared creme caramel with a side portion of sticky black rice & coconut milk - outstanding!

Cocktail hour is 7pm to 8pm, either inside the bar or outside between the pool and the lagoon, depending on the weather. You'll be served a choice of two complementary cocktails of the day, with a tasty hors d'oeuvres dish thrown in for good measure. This soon became our favourite part of the day!

There's an additional bar, also on stilts, that looks directly out onto the lagoon, but this was sadly underused. It was a good spot for sitting in quiet seclusion on the veranda, though.

As well as the excellent food, special mention must be made of the charming bar/restaurant staff - a small team of great characters, who couldn't have been more welcoming, kind, friendly and attentive. They really looked after us properly, and our stay wouldn't have been the same without them.

Breakfast is delivered to your room in the evenings, and stored in your fridge: home-made bread, slices of cake, fresh fruit, juices and yoghurts. It wasn't the most exciting of breakfasts, but it did the job.

The expected problems with mosquitos never occurred. The rooms were fully armed to combat them, and neither of us suffered a single bite.

Car hire is recommended, and the rates are super-cheap: 100 RM (£21/$32) for a day. You'd be daft not to.

If super-sleek luxury perfection is your thing, or if you don't like cats, then Bon Ton isn't for you. But if traditional charm, offbeat character and the individual touch matter to you, then it's an ideal place to stay.

Room Tip: Palm is ideally positioned, and the facilities are all inside.

This is the first review I have ever written on Trip Advisor but we loved this resort so much I had to let everyone know.

Stunning individual traditional style stilted malaysian wooden cottages nestled amongst palm trees, surrounding an elegant long pool and sitting beside a lake which the sun sets over; this place is a little slice of heaven.

Lovely attentive staff, great free cocktails and nibbles each night which can be enjoyed on individual decks over looking the lake and setting sun. Food in both Nam restaurant and at next door sister hotel Temple Tree is amazing.

We only had 4 nights and could have stayed many more. There are far too many big flashy resorts on Langkawi - this place is very different and a far far better place to stay.

Yes there are cats and dogs around - but they just add even more character to the place! Not sure why everyone is complaining about the aircon - perhaps it has been serviced recently as ours was more than functional.

Room Tip: We stayed in Palm and loved it. There is a stunning traditional Malay wooden bath in the bathroom...

My wife and I stayed here for our honeymoon and we both find the resort charming and rustic. Organized as kampung-style resort, it is unique and very pleasant compared with the usual cookie-cutter spas and resort in Thailand. We managed to get a discount coupon online, otherwise, we think its over priced and we recommend other guests to do the same. We received a complimentary bottle of champagne from the staff (many thanks!) and but did not manage to get our free drinks from the restaurant. The staff is attentive and genuinely very helpful. While the age of the houses give the resort its charm, its interiors are tastefully decorated. We did not get the chance to swim in the pools, but the lounges are excellent areas to relax and read a book.

The breakfast is delivered the night before and stored in the fridge (bread, fruits, yoghurt and orange juice plus a cake or two). Its fine but maybe we could have been offered a local-style hot breakfast, like nasi lemak, rotis, etc.

Other than that, overall, it is a very good experience.

Room Tip: Cat lovers will fall in love with the place.

We stayed here as part of our honeymoon and were slightly surprised at the place considering the amount they were charging. We managed to make use if a discount which I would recommend doing. The service was good (we were given a bottle of champagne) but the resort itself is a bit strange. It is set next to the lagoon and is part of a cat sanctuary! Not the place to book if you don't like cats! The pool is long but quite narrow however there is no problem getting a lounger. The 'house' was lovely but we struggled to sleep at night as there was no way of keeping it air tight to allow the air con to work effectively! The breakfast is delivered the night before and consists of bread, cake and muffins - not a very Malaysian breakfast for a 'kampung' style resort.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay however, for the price could have stayed somewhere a bit up market
