“Beach-ing after shopping in SG”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2012

We booked a superior twin room for overnight. First impression was wow, since the lobby is very welcoming and has the ambiance that you're really on a vaction. We are 3 adults and paid for an extra person. The room is spacious, very tidy and the bed and pillows are soft and comfortable. And take note they provide 2 soft pillows per single bed. Love it! They put another single bed in the room because of the extra adult.  We don't expect the resort to be that big. You can really feel that you're in indonesia because of the furnitures are usually made of wood. It has a landscaped garden that makes the resort cozy. Their infinity pool is nice, enjoyable for swimming. If you're tired of swimming, you can go their beach! Lounge to their beach chairs while enjoying the sun. The beach shore is clean, well maintained and the sand is fine! The beach is not usually crowded because it is somewhat a private beach for the guests. Other facilities of the hotel is there 3 restos,  there's a resto for dinner buffet which overlooks the pool and the beach, there is for the breakfast, which is very awesome! Really enjoyed their buffet breakfast, lots of choices to try and for sure you'll have a full tummy! And the resto near the pool for some snacks or bbq. Also the free wifi for the entire hotel is very fast! The staffs are all kind and helpful. Definitely will recommend this hotel.

Never, never book a standard room. It was an old and shabby room, no balcony and expensive. You pay far too much for this room type.
Pool & beach are quiet nice. Unfortunately there are not enough sun chairs at the beach. Breakfast is okay, but the breakfast room is quiet crowded. Good choice of restaurants.

Arrived at 1pm, but rooms were not ready. Staff was friendly and polite in informing and explaining the reasons that they are not able to check me into the room then. I was asked to check back at 2pm for the room at the reception.

Walked around the hotel and was impressed by the surroundings and had lunch over at the coffee shop. Food was good, but not really value for money with the variety on offer. Went back to reception at 2.30pm and was given my room, however my confirmed booking was for a queen bed, but they only had twin beds rooms left, so not much of a choice but to take the room. The gentleman at the reception informed that he had told housekeeping to shift the twin beds together, and checked with me if that was fine with me, at least he is trying his best to help me out.

Happily went to the room as was tired lugging our backpacks with us. Went into the room, beds were not combined together, so I did it on my own... thats fine, went to check out the bath room... but no towels were available. Had to inform housekeeping that they left the towels out when the room was cleaned. Not exactly the kind of impression I wanted to have on the facilities, aircon was weak, turned the fan on, the sound it made was as though it was going to drop on our heads anytime. Turned the television set on, and the remote was not working... pretty sad way to start a wonderful weekend.

Went to the rifle range, lots of ppl, only 2 rifles... waited for roughly 20 mins before it was our turn... Service was good from the staff, patiently explaining and resetting the targets for us.

Decided to walk back and change to our swim attire.. headed to the pool, another disappointment.. lovely view from the top, went in, one of the dirtiest water conditions I've seen on holiday... Bad skin so didn't stay long in the water...

Overall, facilities left much to be desired... Service saved the day!

Room: Stayed 3 nights in a superior twin room (garden view) just after NYE. Average, comfortable and fairly spacious room with older style TV, iron & board, safe, wardrobe, fridge. Overhead fan was very noisy on high settings and ineffective when on a low setting. A/C was effective but a little noisy.

Sleep Quality: Twin single beds were quite comfortable. Room was dark and quiet for sleeping.

Bathroom: Not the highlight of the room. My initial impression was shabby and dirty, however it was clean, just a little stained. Shower over bath with a clothes line. Water pressure was good, and with hot water. Towels were clean however as stated by other reviewers, towels were only provided upon request – which was required to be made every day. Wait time ranged from 5mins to 30mins (with follow up).

Food: B/fast: Variety of Asian and western style from the buffet of average quality.

Other: Several restaurants on site. I mainly ate at the Poolside cafe as it provided outdoor seating, good variety and was reasonably priced. There is a shopping complex within 5-10mins walk – has a bar and a number of eateries (that looked closed but would generally open for you if you asked them to). The bowling alley and a massage centre is also found here.

Location: Lovely position on the beach. Efficient transport to and from the ferry – approx 15mins each way. The transfer process was very good. Courtesy transport is also provided to get around to other venues on the Nirwana property.

Service: Average-good service levels provided around the resort. Most staff speak a small amount of English however it is not widely spoken or regularly understood.

Value for money: 3 nights was US$445.60 for two, including buffet b/fast. I felt this was OK vale, esp given the time of year. Wi-fi was complimentary with reasonable access.

Other: The appeal and focus of the resort/hotel is its pool and private beach. Whilst the private beach looks appealing with its white sandy beaches, they can be covered in tar. Yes, the hotel does provide chemicals to remove it from you and your shoes, it is not ideal (and do not wear white on the beach!). Unfortunately, my visit was in the monsoon season so was very windy to be on the beach so wanted to spend more time around the lovely pool area. The negative here is there are only a small number of sun beds available. We got the last 2 sun beds at 9am!!!

Nirwana Gardens looks lovely and is a clean and comfortable hotel, locally staffed and meets its star ratings. If you’re looking for a short break within easy access from Singapore, you may like it. If you have more time and budget and seeking pristine beaches, you may be better looking at alternate islands.

Having a tiring work, needed much of a time away from Singapore. Arriving was very much like a detoxification of everything "work" and true to my purpose, the resort served very well all my expectations. The beach itself was mesmerizing- off-white (ive seen whiter) sand, fine sand, clean shore, less rocks, shallow water, clear blue and green water, wide and ling stretch of shore. Just two things to watch out for- tar and jelly fish. Just by staring is soooo relaxing!
Food was definitely not a problem! The bbq buffet dinner was worth the damage of sgd50 (inclusive of drink and taxes and sc)! Could taste the freshness of the well-cooked seafood, and the well flavored dishes-soto at, mongolian, salmon pasta, clam chowder soup, bacon, garden and whaldorf salad, etc (buffet as mentioned). There's no japanese or anything Korean on the buffet table though. But that's fine... I was aiming the bbq seafood!
Service at reception was a bit a disaappoinent comparing with the services on all the other areas. Kinda harsh- just a slight demerit but didnt ruin my vacay! Go see for yourself!

We spent our weekend in Bintan. The stay was good. Nice beach and the room is spacious. The only thing I need to feedback is the service of the receptionist. We waited for 3 hours for check in process. Then the room was not ready also. We need to call the housekeeping to request for towels because there were not any towels in the room.
Other than that, the service of the staff at the restaurant and poolside is good. We had dinner at the Kelong Restaurant (Fishing Village Restaurant). The food is good and fresh but they priced the menu based on "Singapore Standard"! Thus, do not expect the food is cheap in Bintan.
Overall, I think it's a good place for weekend gateway.

Room Tip: Bring your own drinking water. A bottle of drinking water costs SGD3 in Bintan!

At the end of hour 10 day trip to S'pore, we decided spontaneously on hopping over for a day of resting, relaxing, pampering, and most of all, away from suffocating crowds. It did not disappoint. At the end of March, the weather was refreshingly cool (for the tropics), albeit a bit wet. The room was quite spacious (especially compared to Singapore) and comfortable. Make it a habit early to take off your shoes in the front of the room - the ultrafine beach sand drags everywhere!

There were not too many visitors. A few kids splashing in the pool, one or two families building sand castles on the beach. I did not spot oil slick, but I couldn't help but feel sorry for all the debris that washes on shore there. The hotel seems to do its best to keep their part of the beach cleaned up, but a bit further out, the empty soda bottles, the styrofoam, and the pieces of fishing nets remind us that this planet is a closed eco system: If you toss it, it'll show up on someone else's front step.

Food is a-plenty and decent if you budget for it; the music, which creates part of the ambience, is very cheesy. They must be trying hard to appeal to 60 year-old Europeans. Don't eat the rice congee for breakfast! Unlike the rest of Asia, which makes its congee using broth, this one is rice cooked to the point of destruction in plain water. The "beef bacon" is a reminder that you are visiting the world's most populous Muslim country, but don't worry about getting your umbrella drinks: they are as plentiful as they are tasty.

There are activities to sign up for - I had a Javanese massage and a 30-min elephant ride through the jungle. The elephant handlers were extremely friendly and accommodating, giving the shutter button on our camera a good work-out on our behalf. Get a bag of bananas at the end of the ride, and you'll experience how two huge animals can be just as cute as a pair of kittens when it comes to sucking for a treat.

Summary: Considering what's going on elsewhere in Indonesia, I think it is a good thing to give them commercial incentives to preserve their rain forests on a large scale. The Nirwana resorts benefit from pristine nature, thus I was happy to support them and the local people employed there. I think a long weekend is the longest I could spend there without climbing the walls like a gecko, but that's just me. It's decent value for money, it's super easy to get to from Singapore, and it does what it advertises: giving you some time away from the rat race. It's a bit too cheesy for my taste in the way it caters to Westerners like me in terms of food and ambience, but knowing my fellow Westerners, that's probably what they have to do.
