“Beach bummers' paradise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2012 via mobile

Enough to drink on the way to the beach with 3 bars. 2 large swimming pools and sprawling lawns. Cosy, spacious rooms. Can't ask for more.

Food is sumptuous but kinda the same on all days. A bit of variety might make the taste buds sing

3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2012

We (2adults and 2kids) stayed here for a week in late July 2012 (and have stayed here before).

The Varca property is one of the best Club Mahindra properties, in terms of space, amenities and facilities. The suite rooms are pretty spacious and while some are dated, some in the main building have been renovated and are in good shape.

The major advantages:

-the beach it fronts on is one of the cleanest and broadest stretches in South Goa and their security is diligent
-the buffet is good value and decent quality, although the place could do with a cafe
-the spa is staffed by experienced and trained people who know what they're doing

Some big draw-backs, though:

-as in most resorts in Goa (which is one of the most corrupt states in India) this resort is subject to a taxi mafia. Guests are obliged to use the taxi services operated by the local union and only private cars are excepted from this rule. The hotel actually sends an e-mail to guests AFTER they have booked, informing them of this and asking them not to bring any private rental cars. On our previous trip, we tried to use a private taxi from a nearby town (much cheaper) and the driver was petrifed, because the local goons physically threaten other drivers (and I have seen this happen on this trip with another unfortunate family). When we complained, we had a run-in with the local drivers who then refused to drive us - we had to use the manager's car. This is an unthinkable situation for anyone who lives outside India.

-the service has deteriorated markedly, with the hotel using cheap labour from north India, many of whom speak no English and are not trained well. The typical Indian service attitude is ever-present - promises of action followed by conspicuous inaction.

-the hotel is understaffed with the result that some facilities are out of order for some time. The gym's a/c broke down and was left unrepaired for five days, which is unacceptable for a hotel like this.

-if you go during the season, beware the hordes of Russian resorters who swamp the place. They are on all-incl deals, drink a lot, are loud and aggressive and the hotel staff can't so anything about it.

Overall, good value for us because we are Club Mahindra members - but I would not pay for this experience otherwise.

Room Tip: Ask to the see the room before you agree tot ake it and check that all the services work.

We went to this resort off season in August. The sporadic monsoon rain left Goa looking beautifully green and, as it was not continuous, did not really hamper our movements. The resort arranged a taxi for the pleasant, 45 minute ride from the airport (Rs. 750 – we had to pay Rs. 1000 for the trip back.)

It’s a sprawling property, on the beach, well laid out with nice landscaping, green lawns and well-trimmed foliage with two swimming pools, a spa, two restaurants and a bar. An activity room made sure the kids had a ball and entertainment in the evenings kept many adults happy. There an internet café and a library, with an indifferent collection of books, half of them in Russian.

Our Studio Apartment was spacious and well-appointed with a large bed, comfortable sofa and spacious wardrobe. A balcony overlooking the lawns and pool was just the place to enjoy coffee in the morning or a drink in the evening. Ensuring our comfort was the efficient air-conditioning, TV, refrigerator, and coffee and tea making facilities. The “dry kitchen” came equipped with a micro wave oven, toast grill, juicer, crockery and cutlery (someone comes and washes up every day).

The food is quite good but rather expensive with members getting discounts. The bar , located in a mezzanine overlooking the spacious lobby has comfortable seating though the happy hours between five and seven pm is a bit early ! Prices are very reasonable as everywhere in Goa.
Internet is free in the lobby and in the bar though signals can get weak in the latter place.
Just outside the resort are a few small restaurants which offer good food and liquor at rates that are just about half of what the resort’s restaurants bill you. Constan Fernandez at FX Pereira’s restaurant, just outside the resort, serves excellent sea food and other Goan fare besides a nice breakfast, made fresh and at very competitive prices. Many residents could be seen picking up food and beer from these places to have in their rooms. The microwave and fridge come in very handy.

Getting around can be expensive as the taxi operators have a strong union and tend to charge a lot. (Rs300 for the two and a half kilometers to Varca village and back and Rs 1200 for the 20 km return trip to Madgaon, with a one hour wait). Motor cycles can be hired just outside the resort.

The service is friendly and cheerful though not always very efficient.

They have a souvenir shop which stocks a lot of stuff from Auroville. The "grocery shop" is actually a handicraft shop that carries some eggs and bread and soft drinks.

Located far from the crowds and the noise, this is not a place for people who want an action packed holiday; it is for someone who wants to have a relaxed, comfortable and pleasant stay. Go for walks around the resort, take in a day trip to Madgoan and see the Church of the Holy Spirit and may be the Big Foot museum and put your feet up and relax.

The Beach here is awesome, we felt it is exclusive for the resort. Clear water and a dirt free zone is the highlight. The studio rooms are cozy. They also have two swimming pools. Although they do have a buffet, but we did not go and had a la carte, and found it nice !

Room Tip: Rooms closer to the swimming pools can be preferred !
