Had been to Sri Chakra International on 22 May 2012. Was in Palghat to attend a family function and knowing the (lack of) options, I was at double minds whether to stay at a relative's house at Cochin or have a good sleep at Palghat. I had stayed at Sri Chakra around 6 years back and had to lazy around for a day due to an unplanned bandh that forced us to stop enroute Yercaud. It was then a good place to stay though the food was nothing to boast about.
This time I realized how important and difficult the upkeep is, as the construction itself. The hotel has been devoid of regular maintenance as is quite evident from the state of paint, doors, windows etc. The hotel which once remained a favorite for travellers has now aged, not gracefully at all.
Let me review this based on the following factors so that it benefits all - location, rooms, food, service, faciities, value for money.
Location - 5 on 5! It just cannot be better than being on the highway. You don't need a map or ask some one on the way to find this hotel. When you come from Cochin, turn left towards Coimbatore from Palghat bypass and around 200m to the left is this hotel. Being on the highway, its just 2.5 Km to the KSTRC bus stand which is at the heart of the city. Full marks on finding this priceless spot.
Rooms - 2 on 5. Don't expect a deluxe double room to give you anything that is industry standard. The paint had started peeling off, toilet flush lever didn't work, windows refuse to close and the linen is soiled. The room is huge though, probably due to the abundance of space when this hotel was conceptualized. Otherwise, its just less than basic for around 2500 INR! A word of caution - every deluxe room has a bath tub, but hold on...that's probably where people stand and take bath. There isn't any tap other than that and the bucket was kept there itself. Lesson - never use the bath tub for its intended purpose.
Food - 3 on 5. Food has never been the USP and this time again it met my expectations. Exceeded, rather :-) for it was worse than last time. You get only spicy kerala breakfast and if you request, you will get bread, butter and jam. A watermelon juice is on offer as a fresh fruit juice. If you think eggs, oats, corn flakes, croissants etc. you are out of place! Tea is offered in a small paper cup and if you insist, you get a full cup!
Service - 3 on 5. Didn't have many interactions with the staff, but found them courteous. The security personnel offered to wash my car and he promptly did.
Facilities - Can't say much now. I know there is a pool, but didn't get time to check it out. Parking space is ample and there is nothing to complain. I saw IPL matches being aired in the garden, so there is an option & space for a video screening. There is loads of space around the hotel, so kids will never complain. But this is Palghat where climate is extreme - it was cool at night and quite dry and hot during the day.
Value for Money - 2 on 5! Overall, this is a place to stop over if you've something to attend in the early hours of the morning, want to stay away from the town, yet have easy access to it and stay is never a priority. Nothing more. I hear that there are many homestays, more on that soon.
I can't think of any direction as better than the other.
