“A pleasant surprise”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2014

I literally found one of the last rooms in Aarhus that day and I was a bit skeptical when I entered the reception as I had also found one of the cheapest hotels in town.
However, my skepticism was put to shame as this hotel is not that bad. The surroundings have absolutely zero charm, but I was there for business and it didn't bother me much.
Downtown Aarhus is 10 minutes away by taxa, so the hotel is not in the middle of nowhere per se.
My room had been renovated very recently and it seems that the whole was about to get renovated. The room was pretty nice and I got a got night's sleep, which is what I was there for in the first place.

My mum used to say that if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all. In the case of the Hotel Mercur, I'm going to hope my mum forgives me...

I visit Aarhus regularly on business and have stayed in several hotels in Aarhus over the years; usually nearer the town centre. A late booking and a fully occupied town centre meant getting booked into the Mercur. Looking a the web site I thought "OK, it looks a bit 70's, but for a few nights it'll be OK; after all, it has a restaurant..." I was wrong.

I don't rent a car when I visit Aarhus. I'm not averse to a half-hour hike to get to the office or a decent restaurant, but to get anywhere from here you need your own transport or spend a fortune on taxis.

A quick wander around the hotel on arrival made me realise that I'd been wrong about the 'restaurant' facilities. Conventionally, a restaurant serves food at various times. The 'restaurant' here is just where a buffet breakfast is served. A stroll around the environs of the hotel lead me to discover no nearby eateries worth mentioning, a small shopping centre (where it would be possible to buy food in a supermarket), and various local winos sitting on benches.

Room facilities are antiquated and in need to renovation, with free WiFi being the only saving grace.

Sorry if you're reading this and work at the Mercur. I'm sure you're doing your best in a hotel which clearly needs massive investment to bring it up to an acceptable level. My brief interactions with hotel staff were pleasant and efficient. It's a shame I can't use the same adjectives to describe the hotel itself.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else.

A short sum up:
-the rooms are spacious enough;
-quiet surrounding (there is a big junction outside, but the windows are rather new and soundproof enough);
-you need to register online to be able to use wi-fi and login on the webpage everytime before going online is a bit annoying;
-my luck was to get bathroom with singing toilet (every time I flushed it it was whistling like an old-fashioned kettle with a whistle) and a sink which was fixed to the wall just barely above my knees - and hence very uncomfortable to use;
-the room was rather clean but it could use some renovation. The style is a bit outdated;
-it is visible that the owner tried to do something with bathroom but I would say the shower could use more effort: it is not a typical shower, there is just a low glass panel separating shower from the rest of bathroom. Quite inefficent, at least for me, as I flodded half of the floor anyway;
-breakfast was ok;
-shopping center and busy stops just around the corner;
-the rooms are not best designed: the desk is fixed behind the door and there is a TV above it. Moreover, at the free end of the desk there is a drawer so if you want to use the desk you need to close the door and mind your head because of TV;
-too few sockets - as in most hotels. Plus there is a switch to switch the socket on and off... Weird.
-radiotor set on 5 was barely tepid.

The reception, restaurant and breakfast are very good.
The parking facilities are very good with a large, free and safe parking in the basement wich is locked during the night.
The staff in the reception is extremely helpful, friendly and smiling. and the lobby area is comfortable, nice and clean.
The rooms are clean and bath/toilet facilities also clean. However the two bunks along the walls together with the slightly shabby look inside the closets pulls the evaluation a little down.
But all-in-all good value for money for a business traveller.
The hotel is out-of-city, but located in connection with a shopping center and a number of shops and restaurants in the area.

Other than it being a bit further out of the city to be called central, this totally met our expectations. Excellent free parking, friendly and helpful staff and a very spacious room for 3 people. Could have done with a proper shower though rather than the hand-held version. Free wi-fi a bonus

I stayed here on a trip in 2012 and found it to be a no frills place to stay. You can't expect luxury here but you can imagine that when it first opened, it must have been quite a grand place. Now however, it feels old and dreary with small beds. I'm not a big guy but I'd imagine the Danes would struggle sleeping in the beds on offer.
All the facilities are there and the place was relatively clean but the wooden decoration felt tired and worn.
I stayed in a single room (though had two beds in an odd arrangement separated by a wooden block) and found it spacious enough for me.
The location of the hotel isn't central to the main city. Its central to Aarhus South but I don't know what there is in Aarhus South so I found it a bit out of the way.
However, a breakfast is included which given the prices in Denmark is very much welcome.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2012 via mobile

I stayed at the Mercur early December for two nights during a visit to the old town and downtown Aarhus. It was a Groupon deal and therefore quite reasonably priced. This hotel is located 4-5 km from downtown, but the bus service is very convenient.
The hotel staff was friendly and helpful, but the hotel itself is in serious need of a major overhaul. It is dated, which is ok, but as a result of that, it appear grungy with old dirt, broken furniture. (cut my leg on a razor sharp broken corner of the veneer of a desk drawer). The rooms are small with no amenities. Even the TV looked antique:) but we didn't use it. There is free WiFi. The bathroom is rather unappetizing. There is clearly an effort made to keep it clean now as the dirt seemed old and ground in.
The Breakfast is simple but quite adequite. However, on the first morning, when we got there about 9o'clock, there were few people there but not a single clean table, the food was sparce, cold and dry, there was no coffee, and a rather moody server. On the second morning a young, very efficient girl kept fresh food coming and the tables clean, all with a friendly smile.
I would not recommend this hotel it is a bit pricy for what you get and it is just for sleeping and breakfast. There is NO services and NO places to sit and relax, including in your room!
