“A lovely quiet break in the countryside - with beaches nearby”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2012 for a stay in August 2012

As returning visitors, we were still impressed with the pool. The children are getting bigger all the time and, on occasions, the space inside the accommodation does become a little cramped but it's no more and no less than we would expect of any holiday accommodation. It's equipped with all you need for a good summer holiday, but we took a small barbecue so that we could cook outside when the weather permitted (which wasn't very often this year!).

This is a lovely quiet location - well away from the hubbub of "normal" life but close enough to beaches and other attractions if you want them. We took our bikes and did the Tarka Trail from Great Torrington down to Bideford and back, as well as a local ride through the woods to Hallwill Junction. The riding at Roadford Reservoir is very limited and will only really satisfy inexperienced bikers.

The local pub is rather quiet, but does accommodate children. There are other pubs in Hatherleigh that are much busier, especially on market days, and there's a pizza restaurant that has potential to be great: the market (Tuesdays) is well worth a visit for the livestock auctions. Hatherleigh also has a bit of a heritage trail that's quite interesting and the town is more interesting than Holsworthy, in my view. The organic butcher on the road leading to Hatherleigh is well worth visiting for some good meat cuts, but there's a Co-Op in Hatherleigh for all you really can't do without (beer, wine, crisps, etc.). The beaches at Bude are still great for surf, bodyboarding, kite flying, sandcastles (Widemouth Black Rock £4.50 all day, Sandymouth Bay is free for National Trust members).

Walk from Boscastle to Tintagel if you can - it's stunning - and then visit the Hotel Camelot to see the view in the late afternoon - also stunning. A bus can take you back to Boscastle.

“A great place to take your small children”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2011 for a stay in August 2011

The cottage is tucked away in the corner of the site, way out in the countryside and well away from everything. The cottage is small, but well planned and equipped with a small private garden/play area. The best thing about the site, though, is the indoor heated pool - it was just perfect for those British summer days when it's supposed to be hot and sunny and you're supposed to sit on the beach all day, but it is neither hot nor sunny and beaches are far from top of the list of 'things to do today'. The children (ours were 5 and 7) loved it and we used it most days in the pretty poor summer of 2011. It is clean and inviting, and not too busy - even at the height of summer. It is, though, at the bottom of the hill from 1 Lakeview Rise so be prepared for a long haul back with tired children. Take your own teapot and a radio/sound system that connects to mp3 player if you like music, although there is a tv and dvd player. It's close to the NCN route along the former Bude railway line that gives reasonably good access to the local shop and pub (about 10 mins walk), but we found the pub in Black Torrington more amenable to small children. There's loads of good walking and cycling country around and we only scratched the surface of it. Allow around 30-40 minutes to drive to the beach. We found Widemouth Bay (parking £4.50 all day) and Sandymouth Bay (free parking for NT members) very good for small children and they both have a small cafe and toilets. Market day in Holsworthy is a nice morning out and there's plenty of places to get decent food, but we liked The White Hart. We enjoyed it so much that we're already planning to come again next year.
