Driving on small roads northeast of Firenze, we spotted a sign for a B&B a few kilometers up a winding road. At the end of that road stood Il Trebbiano Relais, a villa circa 1100 AD., on a hill with a stunning view of the lovely Tuscan hills to the south.
The villa is an imposing edifice and the surrounding garden and grounds are attractive and peaceful. We were welcomed by the staff and given a room with a view of the valley before us. A very good dinner was served in the library, and breakfast the next morning was a nice buffet.
Our room was comfortable and clean; the ensuite bathroom had a huge walk-in shower.
Only two points keep this from an 'excellent' rating. The only internet connection is by a cable at the reception desk, and is shared by all guests. This was not a problem for us, but some might find it a serious fault. There was also just a slight suggestion of shabbiness, and maybe a bit of neglected upkeep. But then, how many buildings are in tip-top shape after a thousand years?
We would happily return for a longer stay.
