“It maybe a chain pub but it's a great one!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2011

My wife and i stayed at the woolpack recently, the whole place felt new and clean the room was very nice although not huge. Breakfast was pretty good and our waitress was lovely and offered us useful advice on places to visit. If you have been to an old english inn before you know what the menu etc will be, but we would stay here again. The village was very quiet and tranquil. Bath was about 15-20 minutes away, frome is 5 minutes down the road. A great location to stay for lots of attractions.

We chose this Inn based on the trip advisor reviews, which of course were pre renovation. From the very moment we arrived we began to relax. The pub is great with lovely local cider and the food was faultless and tasty, although i do prefer my bacon well done but that is just a personal preference, i only had one full breakfast and i know that i could have asked and it would have been attended to. Both Chris and Toni were great hosts, the staff to a person were the most helpful, pleasant and truly caring people i have ever come across all in the one place providing a brilliant service. The pub is full of locals who are all friendly and chatty. The rooms are clean and well presented, nice bathrooms. We will be back.

The Woolpack is a very friendly hotel, the manager and staff very helpfull and efficient. Food is good value and excellent including the delicious breakfast. Our room was very clean and there was a basket of tea, coffee and biscuits. The hotel is being refurbished in a few weeks and hope that the character of the place is kept. We have stayed at Inns before but can honestly say that this is the first we have stayed at that has not been noisy in the bedroom at closing time, even though the bar is very busy (all of the locals come here and are very friendly, there are no other pubs in the village). There is easy access to Bath centre via the bus stop which is just around the corner. I sometimes read these reviews and think there must be a downside but honestly there isn't with the Woolpack.

Room Tip: Some bedrooms have beams and low ceilings

I booked this through my company travel website so wasn't sure what to expect as the quality can be a little variable once you step outside the Marriott/DeVere/Premier Inn type chains. However on arrival in Beckington i did a little internal dance for joy - a genuine old pub in a lovely village instead of the usual new-build family pub on a soul-less trading estate!
PUB:
Perfect, just how a pub should be. The bar was full of what were clearly village regulars which always adds to the atmosphere, good range of beers and very friendly staff.

FOOD:
I hadn't booked a table in the restaurant as i had no idea when i would arrive (impossible to predict the M25/M4 in rush hour!) but even though they were busy the nice waitress didn't keep me waiting for more than ten minutes. The menu was good and varied with some appetising Specials and i was lucky enough to have arrived on "Pie Night" which at <£8 for a main course & a beer is great value, but to be honest even the full price mains were very well priced.
I plumped for the beef&ale pie which was excellent and for once was actually a pie - NOT stew in a bowl with a pastry lid on it (chain pubs take note and invest in a dictionary, if it hasn't got a full wrap-around pastry case it isn't a pie) - thank-you Woolpack for getting it right :-)
A delicious brownie and a few more beers rounded off an excellent night downstairs..and so to bed...

ROOM:
On the plus side the room itself was spotlessly clean and a good size and took me back to my childhood at grandma's, all heavy curtains and dark furniture. Being above a crowded pub i wasn't expecting silence but there was virtually no noise pollution from the bar, and a big thank-you to the staff who must have trained the customers to leave quietly at the end of the night...wish the regulars in my local would do the same!

On the downside...
Some aspects of the room (no.6) were not great. Kettle flex not long enough to safely reach any wall socket. No nets on the windows so couldn't open the curtains in the morning until dressed. Phone could have done with a clean. Shower head not fixed properly to the wall. Spoons in the refreshment basket had obviously not been cleaned from the last guest. Mirror in wrong place in bathroom (not over sink!). Hole in bathroom wall where what looked like a towel rail had been removed. Overall a bit like my own house, lots of little DIY jobs needing doing that I never get around to!
However...planning application the the lamp-post outside indicates a refurb coming up and talking to the lady on reception it sounds like they are about to spend a significant amount of money on the place so hopefully they will all be sorted.

BREAKFAST:
Didn't have any as I over-slept (maybe one too many beers!) but overheard a guest telling the receptionist how much he had enjoyed it as i left, so I presume it is good!

OVERALL:
Great pub, great food, great staff, sure the rooms will be great after the refurb, wish I could think of excuses to visit our site in Frome more often so I could stay here again.

Just returned from 2 nights stay , upon arrival we were met and made very welcome, the village in just like stepping back in time, first impression was good, rooms tired but our family room was spacious and comfortable, and almost spotless! we had a small complaint with cleanliness of bathroom, but this was immediatley resolved and full apology given,we knew that the woolpack was awaiting a refurbishment, just hoping they dont lose the character of an old village pub, food was excellent staff very accomodating, breakfast devine, lots of choice for whole family, great location 10 mins drive from longleat, would definatley re visit to explore the surrounding sites more, Chris and Toni great hosts making our stay very relaxing, look forward to re visiting.

I arrived at the woolpack about lunchtime to check in and found a fantastic range of food on their lunch menu, i had steak sandwich in which my stake was cooked to perfection and presented beautifully, and for dinner we had what we thought were battered cod they were HUGE it looked like a shark fillet it was presented beatifully it would appear the chefs take great pride in their food and all for £9.90 , the room was beatiful lovely comfy bed and was cleaned well daily and i allways had coffee and tea when i needed it, the managers and the staff were fanatstic and took great pride in their jobs. The managers Chris and Toni have huge visions for the place and i cannot wait to return after the refurb in june i have no doubt that it will be a main contender for a comfortable and welcoming stay when it is finished . I would recommend anyone to stay.

In a very sleepy, but pretty village. Staff very helpful and polite.
The downstairs looks quite nice, with a stone floor bar area, and a carpeted area for diners.
The evening menu is good, and excellently priced.
However, the rooms were not so good! The first one we had, basically in the attic, was so small (and low) that you had to walk around permanently stooped! The bathroom was tiny, and the shower unusable for anyone over about 5ft 4ins!
We were then moved to another room, which, whilst being much larger, was terribly tired, with wallpaper hanging off the walls.
Breakfast was ok, although there was no marmalade for 2 of our 3 days! Perhaps not the end of the world, but a fairly basic requirement I would think.
Overall, not bad, but we wouldn't rush back!
