“Going down fast!!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2009

I stayed at this travelodge about 4 years ago and thought it very much what I had expected. I am afraid that the quality of the travelodge chain is deteriorating fast and was evident from this visit and visits to two other travelodges in different parts of the country.
I travelled with my wife and two older children (14 & 11) in a family room. The pull out bed was much too small which we survived due to my wife being only 5' 1". However, in truth, it was too small for her as well.
The cost of this travelodge was at the top end and definitely not value for money.
Having spent many years enjoying various travelodges around the country and receiving a value for money good nights sleep, I am afraid my relationship has now come to an end and will in future be using a Holiday Inn or Premier Inn.
If Travelodge now intend to charge as much as the other good hotels, they are going to need to inprove the quality.

Stayed 1 night here (and never again) en route to Centreparcs. In the first room to which we were shown, the stench of damp and mould spores was unbearable. The travel cot given to us was extremely stained and smelled quite badly of faeces, not something fit for a baby. I complained and the next travel cot was new and therefore fine! However, the next room was only marginally better with again mould growing up the corner walls and in the bathroom. The nice lady on reception seemed used to complaints. It's a handy location, but to be honest, sleeping in a cardboard box would have been better.

We stayed in the Liverpool Street london travelodge in March and it was superb for the money. So when i needed a travelodge for a weekend at Longleat i thought it'd be just the job. Like a fool i booked without reviewing as i thought they'd be all the same. I even told the 2 families(6 adults 5 kids) who were going with me to book as well. Then one night i looked at the reviews !! Argghh!!! What have i done ?!!! i rang travelodge and asked if i could change to another travelodge nearby...no sir..so i got the number for Beckington and rang them up. 'Whats this about the smell ?' i said to the receptionist. She answered me as if i was mad...smell ? what smell ? She said that a customer had left the tap running last year and t had flooded one room but that was all. So...i told my friends..they slagged me off..and we went to Travelodge armed with air freshenner aplenty..
We were all given ground floor rooms, and on entering the corridor from the front desk the smell hits you..as the others said like a locker room/damp smell. BUT..the room was fine, bit musty but fine...We had room 4 and my friends had rooms 11 and 17 and they were fine too. Reception was helpful. Little chef and petrol station outside. Loads of parking outside.Perfect. If you want a restaurant nearby..there's a carvery in Rode about 2 mins away called the Bell Inn which looked nice but they never had a table for 11 !! So we went to the Mill, bit expensive (£15 average main) but a nice place also in Rode.postcode for satnav ba116ag. Hope this puts your mind at rest !! My tip is ask for a ground floor room.Upstairs ? who knows !!

I don't understand how places like this are allowed to continue trading. The smell is the first thing you notice on arrival. It permeates through Reception and up through the stairwell but is nothing compared to the disgusting miasma which greets you when you enter the room. It is a cross between a sumo wrestlers changing room and a smoke-ridden bar in which the smell has been masked by a particularly cheap air freshener. The bathroom had not been cleaned - there was hair (and not from someone's head!) in the bath, the basin was blocked and smelled disgusting and the door handles and light switches were really sticky. There were patches of damp all along the bathroom ceiling. We had booked a room for three but on arrival there were only enough towels for two, insufficient pillows and only two mugs. When I asked for more of everything, I was told that they didn't have any more pillows! They did, subsequently, provide what we asked for, but hardly inspired confidence with their attitude. Nothing had been dusted for ages and the remnants of dead squashed insects adorned the walls. Lovely! The smell was so awful that we all struggled to get to sleep and at one point I considered sleeping in the car. At 8.30 the next morning, whilst standing in my underwear (my 14 year old daughter was also in a semi-dressed state), with the curtains and windows open (trying again to alleviate the wonderful locker room smell), a large black object thudded against the window. It transpired that the window cleaners were actively employed, attempting to wash the open windows (water was dripping in from their equipment). Is it really sensible or acceptable for the windows of an occupied room to be cleaned at a time when most guests would have been in a state of undress. We should have been notified that cleaning (obviously the ONLY cleaning done at this establishment) was in progress and advised that curtains remain drawn. An adjustment of policy on respecting guests' privacy would not go amiss. This was a thoroughly unsavoury experience and not one that we will repeat.. No-one in there right mind, having read any reviews of this Travelodge, would opt to stay here.

Other reviewers were correct about the 'changing room' smell. The hotel was full (the £19 deal) so we could not change rooms. Overall Travelodge rooms are OK, reasonable size, warm etc but are tired. The garage on the service area has a well stocked shop and there is a Little Chef next door. The best thing is its a 20 minute drive from Bath. Hotels in the city cost £75 minimum for a family room so perhaps the saving will make up for anything else!
