“Amazing!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2012

This is a marvelous little hotel right on a sheltered cove of the Bay of Poets. There are only 8 rooms and each one overlooks the water which is literally steps from your window. The owner and her young daughter are charming. We speak no Italian and she speaks no English, yet we felt so welcome here. Although I highly recommend the Locanda il Senatore, there are a few things to know. We were there before the main tourist season and the whole area is more crowded later in the season. Also, the hotel is charming and the rooms are comfortable, but once people are up and moving about in the morning, the hallways are rather noisy. It would be difficult to come here without a car. The lovely town of Lerici is very close by and the bus stop is just up the hill from the hotel, but each time we took the bus we waited an hour for it to arrive. This is a place to come and relax and adopt a slow pace.

This hotel is hard to find in all sences - by car and by internet, but it is really a gem of Ligurian coast. I found this place examining the coast in Google Earth, and after that it was a long investigation for hotels. Actually, there are 2 hotels on this small peninsula to the south of Poets Gulf - Locanda il Senatore and Fiascherino Hotel. And I was dreaming to visit Fiascherino Hotel for a half of the year. Both hotels are invisible in big hotel-booking systems, so I tried to reserve a room through via hotels' web sites, but thay do not have booking engines, you need to use a contact form for reservation. Locanda il Senatore staff was quicker with answer, so I stopped with it, was asked to pay "cancellation fee" via bank transfer. Room price in Locanda was a half of the price in Fiascherino Hotel, so I was nerved with possible lower quality of rooms and service, but I was wrong.
Room was wonderfull - all 8 rooms are "hanged" over the sea. Restaurant in the hotel was really something special - being a gastronomic tourist I was fully destroyed with amount and taste of fish and seafood plates. Always fresh and prepared in traditional Italian home style, it made insensitive to look for another restaurants around. (To tell the truth, we tried marked with Tripadvisor-2010 sign restaurant called Delfino nearby close to Tellaro, but Locanda il Senatore much more better in main dishes).
Locanda is smaller than Fiascherino, so you feel yourself in a secluded wonder all the time. Fiascherino has a tennis court and a swimming pool, but no private beach, and the territory is big and needs servicing... English is not their language, but Med, a reastaurant guy, has a fluent English, and he was very helpful (and friendly) during daytime.
So if you're looking for a hotel near the sea - you should stay at Locanda il Senatore. Just 10 steps to private beach (while you still can go to 2 public beaches with another 10 steps), small verandas for sunbathing, spacious bathroom, place to park your car free of charge (you will never get there without a car), wonderful town of Tellaro in half a mile... Go there and you'll never have any regrets.

Room Tip: All 8 rooms are equally pleasant

We knew nothing about this area of Italy but followed an article I had read in The Daily Mail about "Poets Bay" This hotel was recommended in the article and I have to say it was just magical. It was styled like an old fisherman's cottage and when we entered the room and the shutters were pulled back, it was absolutely spellbinding. The sea was before us and the waves were lapping within 10 metres of the hotel. The room was clean and comfortable as was the bathroom and there was plenty of space. The house next door had been rented by D H Lawrence where he wrote The Rainbow and I could understand the inspiration he must have gained from being in this spot. Although it had not been easy to find the hotel and a lot of small narrow road had to be negotiated, this hotel was my favorite in our three week journey through Italy and France. We dined in the restaurant overlooking the sea and the food was very good. The staff were very friendly and although few spoke English, made us feel welcome.. I loved this hotel and I didn't want to leave after our two night stay. I would certainly return, given the opportunity.
