“Go if you're an all-guys group looking for a decent room on a budget.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

I've been there twice. Had my reasons for booking this hotel each time. I suggest that you book it only if u have same reasons. First time I went with friends(all guys). Quite obviously we were on a budget :) Hadn't pre-booked anywhere, saw this guesthouse, found it OK, booked it. Liked our stay there. Second time I went with my wife and another couple(who were on a budget). I knew the hotel was decent enough so booked it.

PROs:

1. Very friendly owners. Fayaz, Sahera and the whole family is great. They even invited us to Kashmir(their home town)
2. Great place for meeting new friends, for long conversations with total strangers.
3. Great views from room.
4. Location is good, away from noise but still close to everything.
5. Awesome green tea.

CONs:

1. Moisture in rooms (guess that's true for any guesthouse in a hill station)
2. One of the "walls" in the room is glass, so only layer of privacy is a shabby and translucent curtain(which was not much of a problem when ours was an all guys tour, but an embarrassment if you're a couple).
3. Service can be slow, you may have to call 2-3 times before someone brings you the bottle of water you ordered.
4. Same for cleaning.
5. You can hear adjoining room's conversations in your bathroom(and quite clearly...)
6. No towels, soap, toothpaste.

Verdict :
Average guest house. Go if you're an all-guys group looking for a decent room on a budget. Certainly not for couples.

Room Tip: Go if you're an all-guys group looking for a decent room on a budget

We stayed here due to a booking done by travel agent Himalayan advenures office in Manali where we booked a yeep tour " from Leh to Amritsar via the Spiti valley".
This Akash is not a hotel any more but turned into a 'Guesthouse'. The old 'hotel' sign is still there but there is now a new 'Guesthouse' sign. There is no restaurant.
We stayed a the upper level of this building in a dusty room. At night during heavy rain fall, water was dripping into the room. The mold was on the walls. There where no sheets at the double bed and when we asked for, the owner hived us ..... one sheet for a one person bed.
There was no welcoming when we arrived and there was no goodby and thank you when we left de Guesthouse.
At night there where insects in the room.
No hot water in the morning, only in the evening.
During breakfast we needed to listen to the Muslim prayer hour broadcast at the owner his television who is standing in the breakfast room, also named 'Oriental café'.

Indeed, location is good, close to the center, still away from the noise. Price depends -> on-off season, view, room size, how many nights you will stay.... I was paying 500 rps in June for a single room with TV. Bad thing is, at that time owner was more or less away from the place, and it's more of a guest house than a hotel. No cleaning of the room, no atmosphere and no breakfast. It's definitley an average place where you can stay if there is no room at other hotels or you are on a low budget.

I booked here through a tourist office in Delhi as part of a trekking package, paying in advance for a two night stay and transport to nearest train station after that.

The hotel is social, in a good location and the room itself was clean and comfortable. Arrived to find there was no running water when trying to take a shower. Spoke to the manager who assured us he was onto it. Waited a few hours with no joy before speaking to him again and was reassured there was no problem, and that it would be on again very soon. Eventually gave up and went to bed! Thankfully it was working in the morning.

Having been told by the tourist office that the hotel manager would be organizing transport to the train station after our stay, we were anxious to know what the plan was and asked him the night before we were due to leave. He seemed to have no idea what we were talking about and told us to ask him again in a few hours. We did, and he said that a taxi would be coming for us in the morning and to meet him in the lobby. In the morning he told us that the taxi was waiting a short walk away. We walked for about fifteen minutes until he found his "friend" who we were informed would take us just a short walk further to where the taxi was waiting. The manager paid his "friend" money to give to our taxi for transport and walked back to the hotel. We walked for another fifteen minutes, at which point the friend told us to walk ahead while he got a drink and he would catch up. He soon disappeared with the money leaving us stranded a long walk away from the hotel. We then had to navigate several taxis and buses in the middle of nowhere at our own expense to get to the train station.

I'm usually not one to complain but the service was truly terrible, and the relaxed (stoned) attitude of the manager was extremely frustrating at times.

I was here in June 2012 for a few days. The guys are nice, professional and reasonable. The rooms are a steal for the price. I was in room 401, which had a nice balcony with a hammock(albeit uncomfortable), attached CLEAN bathroom for just Rs. 700 a day. The location is not that great because it is far from the restaurants. The road is noisy, but you are on the back of the building and it's much less of a deal that most people think. There is a valley view but it's not pretty. The terrace is fabulous and guests hang out and chat in the night under the stars, when it is super quiet. What I like best is that it tends to attract the right type of guests - mellow people from far and wide. Indians and foreigners are equally at home. Facilities are very basic, though.

Room Tip: pick backside rooms (away from the road, facing the valley) if you have a choice.

Hotel Akash is a nice place and everything is walking distance from it. The room and bathroom was very clean though the room was small. We had a balcony room which was great as we could see the whole of Mcleod Ganj. We stayed there for 3 nights and the staff was really polite and nice.

Room Tip: Take a balcony room from where you can see the whole of Mcleod Ganj. But there aren't fans in an...
