“"Mary Celeste' "”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2014

On arrival we found the Hotel locked up, there was a note on the door telling us to contact a mobile number to speak to someone who let us in. The room we were offered was extremely small (the Tulip room) an L shaped room measuring 10ft x6ft x10ft x 6ft with twin beds, no chairs, 6 coat hooks to hang our clothes on, a small chest of drawers on which was a small TV in front of which was service tray which would have had to be removed to watch the TV. no where for our cases. We asked for another room having had to phone again to speak to someone, as we seemed to be the only people staying we were offered one, a family room at an extra £30 a night, we reluctantly agreed as we were very tired and hungry and had been told a month earlier we could have an evening meal on arrival only to told no one was cooking. The room wasn't very clean and the bathroom dusty in all it needed updating again no chairs. we were a towel short, went downstairs, again no one about we had to leave a note on the bar asking for one. Came back the next day to find our room not serviced, beds not made and no coffee or tea in the service tray, we couldn't understand this as we saw on one else staying. Again no one about and everything locked up, a funny smell throughout the whole place and it felt like the " Mary Celeste'" abandoned, unloved and not a very welcoming place to stay.

In June booked four rooms for a family celebration in Sidmouth in October, they have just cancelled the booking stating the owner has broken her leg. The celebration is the wifes 60th, her sisters 50th, another of her sisters saphire wedding anniversary.

Stayed here 2 nights recently. Unfortunately it's understaffed but the ones you see about are nice enough. Our room was at the front and the first night we hardly slept because the road is like Brands Hatch, the second night after a long walk in beautiful countryside we were so tired we'd have slept in the road if needed so that wasn't an issue.
The food was good but the same limited menu both nights. Good breakfast.
No wifi at all in the room which meant we had to come down to reception to get internet which was a pain, especially when they advertised on Booking.com that our room would have wifi.
The jacuzzi was LOVELY with views of the amazing countryside at the back.
The owners were friendly and kind people.

Room Tip: Bring earplugs, wish we had.

I stayed here with my husband for one night due to business. We were disappointed that the twin room was extremely small (the tulip room) with the beds being against right angled walls so only one person can see the TV - I asked to move but the hotel was fully booked. Also, the room wasn't very clean with bits of tissue and dust balls visible next to the bed. The beds could do with updating and there should at least be a valence in place to hide the base.

Having said this, the bathroom was spotlessly clean with a good shower.

This is obviously a family run place and the owners seemed very nice and friendly. It does have a rather guest house feel, with lots of unnecessary ornaments. There are also two huge Great Dane dogs who bark very loudly every time you pull up in the car park. Also there ia a cat flap and even though I didn't see a cat, I guess if you have allergies you may want to be made aware.

The hot tubs are very clean and there is a nice view from where they are situated. Even though the main road is nearby there are high wooden fences to give privacy.

I don't think we would stay here again, mainly because we are not animal lovers but I can imagine at the right price it would probably be pleasant enough.

The breakfast was supposedly included but for a full English there was a suppliment. We had fried egg on toast which was really nice.

All in all we would give this hotel 5/10

Room Tip: Not the Tulip Room

I came here with my partner and my 3 children for a few nights away but have been left disappointed and will definitely not be returning! !

When we arrived all seemed fine lovely and clean and friendly staff. Our 1st night was great but then the next morning we were asked to leave our room as our bathroom sink was leaking into the restaurant so we did and on arriving back were told we could use the sink until 10pm as it had been changed (bearing in mind my youngest us only 4 months old and I needed to wash her bottles to be sterilised) once I was able to do this I noticed the water was yellow so had to boil bottled water etc we were then told to use the room next door to wash etc and to clean her bottles not ideal at all. In the 3rd day the water pressure dropped and then completely stopped and was left with no water for over 24 hours it's disgusting we weren't offered any bottled water for any of our children (4 months 4 years and 6 years) so we decided to call it a day and left early they didn't seem too bothered by the fact and only gave refund for the night we didn't end up staying no apology or anything.

They also need to get double glazing fitted the room was so noisey as it's on the main road to Exeter and they had a draft coming through not good with 3 small children. .......oh and if you DONT like dogs please be aware they have a massive great daine and a dalmatian who are always in the "free gym" who would use it really with them there? ? My poor kids hated leaving in fear of them and we wasn't informed about them so please be aware! ! Also no staff were available after 9 pm ans on 2 occasions no staff were available after 7 pm.

Total disappointment we could of went camping and probably had more fun than staying here!!

I booked this hotel for a couple of nights through booking.com. I was entitled to a free cancellation up until 3 days before. Unfortunately I had to cancel due to unforseen circumstances and did so 5 days before the date of the stay and was advised that there was nothing due. But the hotel had already taken the payment. When informed by Booking.com that this deal had a free cancellation they said they would reimburse the payment. 2 weeks later when not reimbursed I contacted the hotel and spoke to the manager. There was no apology and in fact she seemed completely uninterested but said the money would be back in my account in 5 working days. It was not and I am now having to take further action to recover my payment. Very bad experience which is still ongoing and no customer service from the manager.
