“Superb Cream Tea”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2012 via mobile

I highly recommend this tea room, the scones we large and still warm, the clotted cream was from Jersey cows and the jam had whole strawberries in it.

To add to our delight tea was served in china cups and saucers. In a quite and secluded pretty garden. Just the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

“When in Devon go here for tea”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2012

Past experience taught us the cream teas in Devon generally represent poor value for money. When they were good they were viciously expensive; when not good ... then the price didn't matter. Well the Southern Cross fixed all of that.

It is in a lovely roadside thatched house with private parking. The seating area is suitably rustic and low-ceilinged, if a bit congested. The full cream tea clocked in at a weighty £4.95 (€6.25). But for that you got 2 large fluffy light scones, oodles of thick yellowish 'clouted' cream and red berry jam, and a proper pot of tea.

Yumm!!

“Very quaint, wonderful cream teas”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2012

The Southern Cross offers some of the best cream teas I've ever devoured. The menu also offers a selection of delicious cakes and light bites. The tea rooms itself is absolutely beautiful, like stepping back in time when you dine, with a very traditional essence. The service has always been friendly and welcoming and the prices are very reasonable for such an enjoyable experience. There is outside parking to the side of the tea rooms. Definitely worth a try and makes a great day out, very family friendly.

“An excellent and "classic" devon cream tea”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2011

We were cruising through Newton Poppleford specifically looking for a cream tea place, and happened upon this little B&B which advertised cream teas on the sign outside, so we stopped, and were very glad to have done so.
Turn in from the road and you are at the back of the B&B with a little garden, split into two areas, and you wouldn't know there was a road the other side.
Very informal and friendly service from the person who I presume is the proprietor, and after taking our order, reappeared no more than 10 minutes later with the biggest scones I've ever seen in my life ! Absolutely massive. Home baked, still warm. Plus, to coin a phrase, lashings of jam and cream and tea.
There was no way way we could eat it all, so we took the remaining scones back for later (and we could have taken the jam and cream as well but as we were still travelling around rest of the day decided not to.)
Only one very picky criticism for the owner, the timer on the toilet light needs fixing, its far too short a duration.
