The reservations were booked by a co-worker who highly recommended this hotel. As it was my first trip to Ireland I was excited and the pictures looked charming. Obviously in the middle of renovations, my excitement was still not dimmed. My first clue all was not well was when I was told they could not get the machine to accept american express and I would need to use another card! I don't fancy putting business trips on my personal card but so be it.
The room was dated but clean and as the bathroom was large, I was happy. Until I foundout there was no internet access available anywhere in the hotel. Which makes working a bit difficult to say the least. Ever positive I set out to look for a place to get a cup of coffee and some euros. I was pointed in a vague way down the street. I set off and realzied the hotel is in the middle of nothing. I don't mind walking but it is a good bit to get to a cafe and supermarket of sorts. The staff at hotel was friendly and so, I was resigned to not getting any work done unless I was in our office in Galway. The hotel was loud and frantic with several youth groups but, hey, if I was in a youth group visiting Ireland for the first time, I would be loud too! No complaining from me although walls were very thin. Which leads to my major complaint.-I had finally adjusted to the overseas flight and was soundly sleeping. At approximately 2am I heard a huge pounding on my door and then a an angry gent dressed all in black was standing in my room telling me to turn my television down. I totally freaked as you could well imagine! I screamed at him to get out of my room and pulled the balnket up around me and continued to demand that he leave. I was shaking and asked why in the H&&# did he not call me to tell me to turn it down?! This was totally unacceptable to me. It has never happened and should never happen. This guy topped 6' and over 200 lbs...me, a female alone in my room. WRONG! I could not get back to sleep and called down to the desk and he answered. He proceeded to tell me it was my fault and to quit worrying since he answered the phone that he obviously worked for the hotel and I had nothing to worry about! What a crazy situation! When I checked out the next morning I told the staff on duty who acted appropriately horrified and apologized. But that was it. I would have left regardless even if it was not my scheduled departure date. Next trip I w ill go to Jury's - located in the heart of Galway and the shops. I am still in shock over this whole deal...and despite taking my number...no manager has called to apologize.

My wife and I stayed at the Clybaun Hotel for 2 nights in March 16 & 17. Our room was clean but very dated. Free wireless internet was available in the lobby but no internet in the room. The breakfast was WAY overpriced and after having it the first day we went elsewhere the second day. There was nothing overly wrong with this hotel, it was just average at best. We got it for a GREAT price, so I can't really complain. The staff was helpful and was mostly pleasant. Would we stay here again? Probably not, there seemed to be SO many B&B's in Galway that we probably would go that route next time. If you are looking for a cheap, no frills place to stay this is perfect, but if you want a little more you should look elsewhere.

I have stayed in this hotel many times(possibly 70 times) in the past and since then a new management company has taken over and this was my first stay with the new management.

As there is still ongoing work happening at the moment its hard to say the end result.

On that occassion the customer service by reception was so lacking and rude that it put me off returning. I did speak to management about it and they have taken action so hopefully future guests wont experience this service which Im assured is not indicative of the service they strive to achieve which is what I expected anyway.

The hotel is outside of the hustle and bustle of the city centre and its price reflects this although you can still reach the city by the bus which stops outside of by taxi. Driving to the city yourself would take(in moderate non rush hour traffic) around 10 minutes.

The hotel has a good large gym, swimming pool, steam, sauna, outside jacuzzi, bar(with food), restaurant & ballroom and two meeting rooms.

The rooms are adequate and of a 3* star tourist class and are currently part of their renovation plans but my room was of the original standard.

The hotel has wireless internet in the public areas but not in the rooms. There are no ethernet connections in the rooms either.

The hotel also has 4 or 5 suites which are still a single room but have a seating area and a king or queen size bed. There is one honeymoon suite which is a canopy bed and the fittings and bedding in the room is white. I have stayed in most rooms in this hotel and even in the honeymoon(on my own mind LOL).

There was building work on in the hotel at the time as they are building a new cafe and changing the decor of the bar area.

It was nice to return to the hotel after 2 years to find some of the same staff still there that remembered my face.

Just back from a 1 night stay in the Clybaun and I won't be recommending this hotel to anyone.
We arrived and upon check in we were told that our reservation hadn't been logged by whoever took the booking and that they were fully booked. Obviously we weren't standing for this so eventually the receptionist found us a room. We went up to the room to what I would describe as a very average room, which I didn't mind considering it was only costing us €99. The carpets were stained but apart from that the room was fine, oh well apart from the lack of a tv remote, which seemed to p*ss my fiance off no end :-)
About 5 mins after we arrived in our room, we were just relaxing on the bed (just as well that's all we were doing) when we heard someone trying to open the door. Eventually this couple "burst" in the door with a rather shocked look on their face to find us in what they thought was their room. They showed us that they had been given the same room number key as us. They were very nice about it and went back downstairs. At this stage we were starting to get p*ssed off because not only could we have been " at it" but if we weren't there and had left our belongings in the room, I wouldn't like to think that someone had been given the keys to our room to freely rummage around (if they felt the need :-) )
Anyway we headed for a walk and on our return to our room our key wouldn't work, obviously because they had assigned our room to another card.
We went down to the receptionist and explained what had happened with the key not working and that other couple walking into our room and she just took our card and re assigned it to our room. Not even an apology!!!!
The bar is very function-room like and is in desperate need of a renovation.
The breakfast the next morning was ok, the food was nice and warm. The glasses and cutlery weren't as clean as they should have been but at this stage we just couldn't wait to check out and go home.

We stayed at the Clybaun for 8 nights and it was absolutely brilliant, the rooms are very spacious and the cleanliness throughout the room and the hotel its self were outstanding.
Its only a little short walk to the waterfront and bus stops right outside the hotel which was really convinient, a bus ride into Galway only takes about 15 min depending on the traffic.
Check in time was 3pm but we were very much pleased as when we got to the Hotel at 1pm that our Room was ready for us to get in. We have to say all the Staff were very helpfull, friendly and efficient at all levels.
We could write pages about this Hotel but you have to been there your self to experince the atmospheare which lays within the whole building...all we can say is its worth the money and from the minute we walked into our room it felt like home ..to be honest we didnt wanted to leave when we had to and so we booked it again for march straight away.

  • Liked — The cleanliness ,atmospheare and comfort
  • Disliked — Loved everything
