I really had the worst expectations after reading some of the reviews from past guests...however I was very pleasantly surprised. The reception team were very helpful, in a natural way...no fuss....no fakeness....just efficient, friendly and very accommodating. The room was fine...very clean...nice enough size...just what you'd expect from a 3 star....no more, no less.
Breakfast was sufficient, and the dinner was very tasty....the only little thing which I felt was missing, was a bread basket. Call me old fashioned, but I love some bread to nibble on whilst waiting for my dinner to be served!
Again, even though the staff were under pressure as it was busy, they remained very friendly.
The leisure centre wasn't bad....just very busy....which is not a negative mark for them....just typical on a weekend in the Summer.
The bar staff were good...and the live music on the Saturday night, was of a high standard...I just wished more people would've gotten into it...as they deserved a more lively audience!
The lobby area is very spacious and comfortable...and the location of the hotel is fine if you have a car....and are not looking for a city or sea view!
Overall....a nice, pleasant stay. I would definitely recommend it for a 1 or 2 night stay, if you want to see some of Galway City and it's coastline. So, many thanks to the staff...you did a good job! Ignore these critical fools who have nothing better to do than complain and pick fault!

  • Liked — Relaxing and friendly - no fuss.
  • Disliked — The pool & sauna area which was too busy for my liking.

A comfortable overnight stay on the way to Connemara

First of all, let me assure readers that our room was perfectly clean, and I am fussy in that way. I guess we were lucky, and maybe we got a better room because I was accompanying my elderly wheelchair-using mother. Also, I reckon it may have suffered badly during the Galway Races. In fact she found the room and bed very comfortable, and she's not always so satisfied. What I would say is that food is not the hotels strongest point, as things were a bit hard/overcooked. Reception and relaxation areas are very pleasant, and the leisure centre with its outdoor hot tub is really nice. The hotel's location suited us as a jumping off point for Connemara, but one needs to bee aware that it is very, very far from the seafront of Salthill, in an outermost pleasant residential suburb of Clybaun. It is a bus/taxi/car ride away from the city. Perfect as a stopover but I wouldn't necessarily base an entire holiday here. If you have already booked, no need to be concerned, enjoy the leisure facilities and have a relaxing time.

My husband and I just checked out of the Clybaun Hotel this morning, and I could not get on Trip Advisor fast enough in an effort to ward off other unsuspecting travelors.

First off...let me say that we do not typically travel with 5 star expectations. We travel modestly, and enjoy a clean, safe hotel with the basic amenities. We are on the tail end of a trip around Ireland, and have stayed mostly in B&B's.

Upon checking in, I had high hopes. The Lobby is very clean and slightly modern. BUT...don't be fooled.

We got to our room and it was literally moldy. The carpet next to the bed was gray with mold and it smelled like you would expect an old basement with water damage to smell.

The bed was horribly uncomfortable, there were waterstains on the walls, the furniture was chipped, and the walls were filled with gashes.

Beyond a fresh coat of paint and some TLC this room had a bathroom that was SO dirty my husband and I chose not to shower.

Our rooms was also right over the pub which played loud dance music until late at night.

All I can say is if you are headed to Galway or Salthill, check into a B&B. There are a million of them, so even if you can't get a reservation online, I know you could get one when you get there. I regret booking this room at $283. We did it because the Galway races were this weekend and did not know what vacancy would be like. The B&B's had vacancy signs all over.

If I had one word to describe my advice when considering the Clybaun: AVOID.

I booked this hotel through EuroBookings.com. My husband and I arrived from Dublin after 11 at night and were quickly and efficiently booked in. We then went to our room. It was dirty, it smelled of cigarettes and alcohol (it was meant to be a non smoking room) the fixtures and fittings were broken, the carpet was badly stained and the walls were scratched and marked. I had pretty much decided i was not sleeping in that room within the first minute and was about to call down to reception when i saw a used condom half under the bed.
The duty manager dealt with the situation as best he could but in general the staff were unprofessional. We had to stay that night (it was so late) in another cleaner room but i could barely sleep as i just did not want to touch anything. We left the next morning (we were meant to be staying 3 nights) and paid half the room rate for the previous night. I asked that the general manager personally call me to explain how he could let something like this happen in his hotel and have yet to hear from him.
A number of people have mentioned how cheap this hotel is - we were charged a special rate of over 500 euros for the 3 nights - considering the state of this hotel, i consider that very expensive.
Avoid this horrible disgusting place.
