“Great Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed today NEW

Great food, wonderful friendly staff, especially Georgie our waitress. Beautiful scenic position on river and short path across meadows into town.
The only slight downside to our clean and comfortable room was that it was directly over bar, so noisy until closed, but we still very much enjoyed our stay and will return.

Room Tip: Not over bar unless you stay in bar and enjoy the ambiance until closing.

Beware this deceptive hotel. Initially, we thought it was lovely. It is in a really good location, with a beautiful view of the river, and we enjoyed a nice drink outside watching the world go by. However, when you want to go to sleep all hell breaks loose.

We were in room 3, which is directly above the bar. It's not ambient low-level noise you can hear, it's literally every single word of conversation. After we complained, the manager kindly moved us to rooms another floor up, which were much quieter. However, they were unable to accommodate this for the 2nd night of our stay, so we cancelled and drove back home. Trust me, if a drive from Salisbury back to Suffolk at 5.30pm on the Friday of a Bank Holiday is preferable to staying here, you know it's bad.

I think greed might have got the better of the owner of the hotel here, I suspect they know full well the rooms on the first floor are deeply unpleasant to stay in but are determined to rinse £125 a night out of them all the same. If we had been able to stay in a room on the top floor for the duration of our stay, this would have been a very different review.

My wife and I just loved this establishment other than for the ultra steep and difficult to negotiate stairs, smashing and cosy bar area, really nice and helpful bar and reception staff, and wonderful food. Indeed the best cooked breakfasts we have ever had

Room Tip: Very difficult stairs and no lift so not good for elderly

This hotel is friendly and welcoming. The position is lovely, overlooking the river and beyond the water meadows to Salisbury Cathedral. The walk into the City is an easy one. Our room was lovely, simple and stylish with everything we needed. Throughout our short stay, everyone was professional and extremely helpful. We loved it and will return.

Room Tip: Lovely views at the front of the hotel, but could be noisy in the summer as the bar is below and the...

We have just had Sunday lunch in this lovely restaurant. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was lovely. The service was fantastic and our waitresses were lovely, especially Sammie. We can't wait to come back again.

Went today as were in Salisbury, hadn't been for years so gave it a shot. We sat in the bar and ordered from the bar menu, plenty to choose from and a good price.

Negatives first, our meals came out at different times and we both then waited a age for knives and forks, I ate lots with my fingers. The bar maid had quite a 'loud' voice but was welcoming and attentive so positive really.

The positives, good menu, reasonable prices, lovely food, fish and chips in a mini frying basket, good drinks, books to read, board games avaliable. It's 98% of the way there just the fine details to get right for what will be the best pub grub in the area. Would like to try the restaurant one day. Thank you

Dear happy farmers

Thanks for visiting the Old Mill and for leaving such a positive review. I'm delighted that you had a nice time and we certainly hope to see you back in the restaurant soon.

I'm sorry about the slight disconnect between the timing of your meals being delivered. I'm not sure of the problem, but these are the types of issues that we are looking to iron out as we build our team.

Thanks for the feedback and kind words.

The location is nice. it is a short walk with beautiful views to multiple restaurants or the cathedral. The rooms are not for tall people. The room was comfortable for a short stay and the river outside the window adds a nice back ground noise for the evening. The staff was extremely pleasant and helpful. The restaurant was nice with decent food.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Old Mill Hotel is a 15th century building with features dating back to 1250. From its early ecclesiastical beginnings, it was transformed in the 16th century to a paper mill. The hotel is in the most tranquil location of Harnham Meadows. However, the shopping and tourist district of Salisbury City centre is a mere 10 minute walk. The paved footpath takes you through the meadows which boast the fantastic view of the Cathedral that was voted 'Best View in Britain' in a Country Life poll. It was also made famous in John Constable's classic painting 'Salisbury Cathedral'. (This camera shot alone will make your visit worthwhile.) The hotel is Grade 1 listed in parts and stands in a most peaceful and stunning location above 3 mill runs off of the River Nadder. This really is a countryside escape, just a stone's throw from the ancient city. Our traditional old English bar with low beams, stone floors and open fires, is a step back in time. A little piece of old England that has been preserved for your enjoyment. You can sample the best cask ales, a great selection of wine and food and chat to the locals whilst enjoying the best welcome and hospitality that Wiltshire has to offer. The restaurant is set in the oldest part of the hotel and sits above a mill run which is visible through a viewing panel. The ever present hum of the rushing waters and the large open fireplace, make it one of the best places to enjoy perfectly English food that's been freshly prepared by our chefs for your pleasure. When the weather permits, our restaurant and bar may be outdone by our fantastic garden setting for the best place to enjoy a cool beer, a glass of wine or a great meal. We have 11 en-suite bedrooms set over 3 floors. (No lift available, however, we will of course help you with your bags if needed.) The historic staircase leads you up to the narrow corridors of the newer part of the building, a mere 300 years old. We are sure you will find the views from all our bedrooms are impressive, whether it's the Harnham hills, the River Nadder or over our fabulous gardens set on either side of the mill run, where every seat has a waterside view! The hotel bar, restaurant and bedrooms are undergoing refurbishment during Autumn 2014 and the garden will be completed in March 2015. This is being done with the maximum respect for our present hotel, bar and restaurant visitors and will enhance this already great experience. ... more   less
