“A Gem of a Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2013

This hotel is fantastic, and unusual as it is built into the hill side giving split levels and 'tree house' feel. It is set in a National Nature reserve in the montains to the West of Havana. The rooms overlook a forested environment and the associated village/town below. Humming birds and other species are in abundance (but strangely there is a pair of captive monkeys who live on a very small island in the cantral lake) It is government owed so gives you a more authentic Cuban experience. The staff are very helpfull and 'down to earth'. The hotel is part of the wider community of Las Terrazas which was bult by the Cuban Government to support the tourist industry associated with the National Park in which it is situated. It is a small village/town, but is a good example of text book 'utopian community'. The whole community makes you welcome. There are a handfull of restaurants and bars in the community including the hotel. All are very reasonably priced and the vegetarian restaurant is well worth a visit. It is also a good location to act as a base for local attractions, Havana and beyond. By far the best hotel we stayed at!!

Room Tip: Rooms on the third floor give the best views of the forest.

The Moka was one hotel-highlight of our trip on par with the nice hotels in Havana. The hotel's reception, building and premises are stunning. The rooms have beautiful tiling, big beds, a balcony with a great view and a spacious bathroom with a glass wall so you can enjoy the view while showering. In the morning you will be woken by birds, I have never seen so many interesting birds as in Las Terrazas!

The restaurant's breakfast is generous with lots of sweet and savory options in a buffet. We also spent quite some time at the "Two Brothers" bar. We loved the view, the nice barkeeper and the drinks he prepared. On weekend nights they had a small local band.

The staff was quite helpful, especially one lady spoke very good English and we booked a guided tour for the next day (deadline is 4pm the previous day, so book up front, if you only stay one night). We recommend the 4 hour walking tour to the old coffee plantation La Serafina, the forest is impressing and you can see lots of birds.

We stayed for one night in this state owned hotel in the eco village of Las Terrazzas. Hotel is fine (bit out dated, like everything in Cuba), with a nice bathroom (with big window, view on the surroundings) and big terrace (one night, including breakfast: 63 euros). Make sure you have dinner in restaurant El Romero (vegetarian), a few steps from the hotel. Hikes can be arranged at the hotel (19 euros per person (!)). Breakfast is average, coffee bad! Nice swimming pool, which is also visited by (noisy) locals. Parking is 1 CUC per night.

Room Tip: Take a room on the top floor (best views).

We stayed for 3 nights and really loved the location and proximity to the local community. Eating at the Romero vegetarian restaurant in the village is a must. However we must agree that it is very noisy at night with music at full blast over the complex nearly 24 hours a day and a car alarm sounded several times a night each night we were there. Even on a bird watching expedition we could hear loud music all the time.
However the MAJOR problem we encountered was the theft of money from the locked safe in our bedroom.
The room safes are made available at an extra charge of 2 CUCs per night and your room key card is activated to allow you to use the safe. My wife left her purse in the safe all the time we were there but thought on the 1st and 2nd mornings that there was not as much money in it as she remembered but couldn't quantify the loss as she couldn't recollect exactly how much money there originally was in the purse. However on the 2nd morning she found that there was just one 20, one 10 and one 5 CUC notes left in her purse. On the last morning before checking out she found that this money, too, had gone and her purse was completely empty.
We reported the loss to Reception who asked us to wait whilst they called their Security person even though our taxi had arrived to take us to our next destination. The Security person, after a lot of effort, managed to get a readout from our door lock and safe lock that showed that our room had been entered and our safe opened each night at about 8.15pm whilst we were at dinner.
Despite this clearcut evidence that the safe had been opened in our absence, the hotel refused to believe that their security system could be breached and that their door/safe plastic card could be copied or the system bypassed. We pointed that fraud or theft using compromised plastic cards is extremely common place but the hotel continued to insist that their system was foolproof. 2 hours had passed by this time and the hotel insisted the only way forward was to call the Police and wanted us to stay on even longer to talk to them but we could not keep our taxi waiting any longer.
We gave details of our next location so that the Police could contact us there and also our email details so that they could let us know the outcome of the investigation but we have not not heard any thing from anyone since.
My wife probably had about £50 stolen in all but more worrying was the fact that the safe also contained our passports, homeward air tickets, travel insurance etc, the loss of which would have been a major headache. BEWARE!!

Nice food, good wines.
They even have internet.
Good swimming pool.
We had a great stay there.
Tip: try the vegetarian restaurant in the village, and at the end: drink a coffee at Maria's.

I wanted to share a little love I have for this property and community. I've been organizing educational and sustainable travel programs to Cuba for over 20 years now and one of my favorite places to stay leaving Havana and traveling to Pinar del Rio is the MOKA. It is one of my favorites in the Caribe for its people and place!
In 1985, Unesco declared Las Terrazas "World Biosphere Reserve" because of this designation the biodiversity in the area is rich, protected and steward by the local community and governing bodies. This Hotel has a great history to ask when you check in. It was created intentionally BY the community to benefit from tourism receipts. A great place to stay if you care about your money benefiting the local community.

Room Tip: Don't forget to grab a phenomenal vegetarian meal at el Romeo and if you love it support the fou...
