“Great location, ok interior but poor food quality”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2012

Stopped off here for some food after a day out on the NYMR. As there was was not a great deal of choice for food in the area at 6:30pm we had little choice on what to do for food.

Good location for the NYMR, right next to the level crossing at Grosmont and not to bad inside. Staff seemed decent enough. Food however was all micrrowave food. Noting was fresh apart from the salad side. For £25.00 meal, not to impressed.

“Short-sighted management / ownership”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2012

Truly appalling experience. Incredibly understaffed - one poor lady apparently running the place by herself. 10 minute wait before she even appeared behind the bar whereupon she did her best to serve 3 customers simultaneously. Food when it arrived was easily the worst on the entire c2c walk: dry chips, dry pie, over-cooked vegetables. Effortlessly took English cuisine back several decades. What's the point of penny-pinching like this? None of our party will ever return and the over-worked staff will find somewhere better to work. In fairness to the cook, he may have been the character leaning tiredly on the bar at 8pm, having been on duty since 7AM. Well done owners: great management.

“GOOD FOOD - GOOD BEER!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2012

During a visit to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, my wife and I decided to have lunch at the Station Tavern at Grosmont - a very short stone's throw from the station! Slightly disappointed that a "Sunday Roast" was not on the menu, but what there was was a good choice. My wife had the Salmon fishcakes (which were very nice, she assured me) and I chose the Homemade Lasagne. Both were served with hand-cut chips which were excellent ! The lasagne was very good. As the food was freshly cooked, we did not mind the wait too much, but were conscious of the time as we had planned to catch a train up to Goathland (TV's "Aidensfield). Others in the pub were getting edgy whilst waiting for their food.... possibly a little too long perhaps. However, the food was definitely worth waiting for. In addition, the Cameron's "Strongarm" (Real Ale) was in top form and made the wait very pleasant. This establishment is highly recommended.

“good pub grub”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2012

love the atmosphere of this pub, went just at the end of the 2011 summer tourist season so there were just regulars and a few avid trainspotters. lots of old railway based photography/paintings on the walls as expected. food was good pub fayre (tasty gammon) and god value.

“Fat Duck?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2012

Mrs.Trouserpress and I've been visiting the Station Tavern for several years now whenever we holiday in Grosmont. It's unpretentious, serves good beer, and the food is pretty satisfying pub fayre. But I'm sad to say that after this evening we won't be back. Usually the bar is pleasantly quiet - holidaymakers, people who've been walking in the area, visitors to the steam railway which runs right next door. Yes, it's quiet. Is it wrong to like quiet?

Unusually our visit tonight for drinks and a meal was complemented by a squad of what appeared to be female characters from Viz (complete with that "Na-aa-aaa" laugh) who had obviously been in the bar for some time and were having fun by singing along at top volume with a "mawkish hits from the 60s" CD, adding to the spectacular carnival effect by waving their bingo wings in - sort of - time to Gerry & the Pacemakers. Sadly we were sitting next to them, though the bar's so small that probably everybody else felt as though they were too. Between dismal ballads, some of the group tried to strike up conversation (I use the term loosely) by asking if they "could have some of my fish". It's certainly an opening gambit I haven't heard before, and it must have been obvious to the barman that their behaviour was embarrassingly disruptive, However, he did nothing. So,having established that we weren't the inadvertent guests of the off-duty GB Olympic women's semi-synchronised tattoo display team (or perhaps their grandmothers), we left without paying.

So, although it's not great, our previously favourable impression of the Station Tavern was spoiled by managerial failure to deal with unacceptable behaviour - and the place isn't so fantastic that we'll give it another chance.
