“Best Day of our Trip to France!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2013

We were visiting Paris with our daughter and future son in law and booked a day out of the city with Loire Valley Uncorked. Gerald picked us up at the train station and took us to a lovely Domaine where he gave us a tour and started the wine tastings. We sampled many wines and learned a lot from Gerald in a relaxing setting. He then took us to his charming bistro where we enjoyed a several course lunch, with wine parings for each course chosen by Gerald. Geralds passion for his business is contagious and it was our pleasure to spend the day with him. The Loire Valley is beautiful and serene, and was a welcome change from the crowds in Paris. We highly recommend Loire Valley Uncorked. Our day in the Loire Valley was our favourite of the ten days we spent in France.

“Ideal, and intense, full-day visit in the Loire Valley”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2013

I was visiting Paris for three weeks of professional activities. My son, 24, came with me for the first 10 days. He wanted to visit the Loire Valley wineries, which he had last seen as a 2-year-old when we lived in France as family. I thought this would be great, too, but only had one full day to devote to the activity. We booked the Two Vineyard Loire Wine Tour & Tasting--two wineries (a third one was added for good measure) and lunch at the Bistrot Les Tontons. To make this work from Paris, we took the TGV Paris (Montparnasse)-Angers. Gérald met us at the station. We traveled for the day in his very comfortable SUV. At the end of the day he took us to the Saumur station, and we returned to Paris via Angers, again on the TGV. It was so much more pleasant than renting a car, and we were treated to Gérald's commentary throughout the day.

The description of the tour on the Loire Valley Uncorked web site is complete and accurate. We tasted more than 30 Val de Loire wines--white, red and sparkling--at the three wineries. We also enjoyed a lovely lunch at the Bistrot Les Tontons, where Gérald (who mostly spoke English to us) left us with Sarah-Jane, his wife, with instructions to speak French at lunch (she is British; he is French). All of the wineries we visited were registered organic facilities. Gérald is a co-owner of the third winery, and very knowledgeable about the farming and wine-making aspects of organic wineries. I'm an avid oenophile, but not very knowledgeable about Loire Valley wines. My son had benefited from the famous Cornell Wines and Spirits course, and was anxious to learn more. We were delighted.

This tour is not inexpensive, but it is actually an excellent value. All of the logistics were handled by Sarah-Jane and Gérald--leaving us to "worry" about the wine and overall experience. I'm sure we'll try the longer version of this tour the next time my wife and I are in France.

“Informative, Enjoyable Day with Gerald”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2013

We came in as a couple who likes wine but were by no means especially knowledgeable. Gerald was very informative and we learned a ton over the course of a very enjoyable day in the Saumur area.

The tour exceeded my expectations. We visited three different wineries and sampled a variety of wines, all with a running commentary and discussion that really added to the experience. The countryside is inherently beautiful, which has nothing to do with Gerald I suppose, but his obvious love for the area and his deep knowledge from growing up in the local wine business added so much enjoyment to the day.

For those native English speakers worried about language barrier issues, Gerald speaks and understands flawless English.

Let Gerald pick the food and wine for you at lunch. You won't be sorry.

“Absolutely wonderful experience and a MUST when visiting the Loire Valley!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2013

This was our first visit to the Loire Valley and it will definitely not be our last. We found Loire Valley Uncorked through TA and took their One Day Loire Valley Discovery Tour--it was the highlight of our trip! From the initial contact with Sarah-Jane, to our goodbye at the train station, we could not have asked for a more perfect day in the Loire Valley. We were staying in Paris but took the train in to the Loire Valley for the day to take the tour. Gérald, our host, started our day with a visit to the vineyards of Domaine de La Paleine. Having grown up in the Loire Valley, Gérald is not only extremely knowledgeable about the winemaking process and business, he is a fun (and funny!) host who made us feel as though we were spending the day with a friend. We went into the vineyards, toured the underground limestone caves (where the sparkly is kept), and enjoyed a tasting with 17 different wines from the Domaine. All the while, we learned a LOT of great information and, specifically, about the wines of France. After the tasting, Gérald took us to his bistro, Bistrot Les Tontons, for a handcrafted lunch (see the charcuterie photo! YUM!) for which he handpicked several wines that were the perfect complement to our delicious meal. His lovely wife, Sarah-Jane was able to join us for lunch, and we had the most wonderful time getting to know her...she was an absolute delight! After lunch, we had some time to wander around the quaint town of Saumur...we even had time for a bit of liqueur sampling before the train back...trés bon! All we can say is THANK YOU! This visit made our trip extra special, and we will absolutely be visiting them again in the future! --Paul & Tara Fust, Atlanta, GA

“A great experience for first timer”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013

My parents-in-law, husband and I are totally new to wine tasting. After looking at all the good reviews on trip advisor, we thought it would be ideal to slot in a day of learning at Loire Valley Uncorked on our recent Europe trip.

Indeed, our expectations are well exceeded. It started with theory by Gerald in the vineyard, production line and limestone cave. Following that, we had a taste of 17 different wines. The learning journey ended with lunch at Gerald's and Sarah-Jane's bistro. This was when the interesting cultural exchange occurred. Being from diverse background, we were so curious about each others culture and chatted about anything under the sun, from Sarah-Jane's kids to France inheritance law.

Gerald is very patient and speaks very good English, so you don't have to worry about language barrier or difficult accent. I'm not sure if this is too much to ask for, but I thought it would be perfect if Uncorked can provide some key notes on the knowledge taught. I think this is extremely useful for newbies like us to bring home as a starting ground for further research.

I must really commend Sarah-Jane for her effort in going the extra mile. To save money on train tickets, we took the earlier train from and later train back to Paris. Gerald was flexible to pick us up earlier at Saumur train station. Sarah-Jane visited the local tourism office prior to our visit to read up on activities so as to keep us occupied till our train departed. One point to note, follow the train timing recommended by Sarah-Jane. There is nothing much to do in Saumur after the wine tour. We sort of regretted taking the later train as we were quite groggy after all the wine.

All in all, I would highly recommend this trip for the fruitful learning and the extremely hospitable Gerald and Sarah-Jane!
