“Nice experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2012

We had a two night stay here in room 20 which is airy and spacious and has a little sitting area tucked in the corner tower. In high summer this room would be hot but there are large windows for air but no a/c. I was a little cold but the central heating fixed that quickly. The bathroom was spacious and well equipped. There was a fridge and mini bar. The only criticism i have is there was a bedspread which is a continuing bugaboo of mine. I prefer duvets and in this day and age all hotels should have them. The view is over the pretty gardens and pool and we could hear a horse demanding his supper around 5 pm. This is a chateau so you have to remember its not going to have elevators and level floors. Dinner was sublime...we went the whole hog and it was served professionally and with a nice tempo without being a 4 hour affair. The portions were generous for this calibre of restaurant. Breakfast was buffet and we were late the first morning so the coffee was not the hottest. The croissants were high quality. The fruit was a little on the spartan side but there was an orange squeezer (electric) for fresh OJ. You could boil your own egg...trial and error yielded a requirement of 7 minutes for this. The cheese and ham were a little boring considering the region but the French don't do breakfast the way the Scots do for example....no fry ups. The staff were courteous and spoke good English. No warm welcome here but we were not treated badly either. On the second night, having had a lunch on our sightseeing trip, we went to the local super market and bought cheese and wine and had that in our room ....an early night in advance of a long drive the next day. For the price we thought the chateau was very good value. I would say it would be super for a small party or wedding in late June or early Sept.

Room Tip: 20! Judging by the floor plan the rooms looked fairly big and hose looking over the pool are pretti...

Thank you really much for your post concerning our Castle. We are really glad to learn you enjoyed your stay. We still want to improve our customers'comfort and could maybe buy some duvets in the future. We really thank you for all compliments concerning the restaurant too. I will pay more attention to the temperature of the coffee and to the fruits'maturity. I prepared a paper for the egg machine in order customers use it more easily.... I am sorry if I was not available enough on your arrival to welcome you more properly...I am happy to read you had a good time in France!

With expansive grounds, this is an interesting Chateau. Staff were friendly and profesional. We stayed on the second floor (old servants quarters), rooms are compact but comfortable. A fan combatted the heat of the day. We looked out over the pool and fields. Dinning on the terrace over looking the gardens was pleasant, food was good but in truth I had expected more. Menus start at €32 ( prices only viewable in the gentlemans menu) so dining need not cost £70 unless you take advantage of a good wine cellar. I travel 18 days a month and have stayed in all sorts, I would go back

The Chateau de la Verie is an –as the name already says- old castle that was turned into a hotel and restaurant. As we arrived around 7:30 pm, dinner was served in the restaurant. Many waiters were rushing by but took no notice of us except a short „bonsoir“. We felt a little lost, honestly, because no reception or responsible person was visible. After two minutes a woman appeared that presented our keys. The welcome was professionally friendly but not very heartily.

Our room was in the second floor and equipped with the typical things you expect in a hotel: shower, hairdryer, toilet and a mini-bar. A little speciality in our room was a small jutty-style room with two seats and a tiny table inside. A quite cosy place to sit. Besides the jutty, the room was quite nice as well but cleanliness wasn’t that great. The walls were decorated with a strange kind of brownish wallpaper that had a quite rough and “fibery” texture. I thought that this should be vacuumed because it appeared quite dusty and some spiderwebs were hanging around. Besides that, we saw many dead flies in the lampshades, etc. The cleanliness of the bathroom was still good.

The rest of the hotel, especially the exterior, is worth to mention. The park surrounding the hotel is huge and quite nicely styled. You can walk around the hotel and enjoy the area.

Breakfast in France is a little difficult for non-french people. But in the chateau you have quite much choice. The breakfast is “semi-served”. You get tea/coffee, orange juice and a selection of bread (baguette, croissants, vienneroises). From a buffet you can get one type of cheese (gouda), salami and ham. Jelly, eggs and yoghurt are available as well. Quality of bread was good, cheese and ham were a little boring.

We liked the short stay in the hotel. The room was good, so was the breakfast. People in the hotel were “okay” but as I already wrote more professional than friendly. Somehow I felt that some special extra is missing in this hotel but I can really recommend it.

My husband and I stayed here overnight on the way down to Bordeaux. Having been recommended it from a review in one of the National Newspapers, we thought we would like to experience a night in a French Chateau. We approached it through a tree lined driveway and it looked really magnificient as you would expect a Chateau to be. We checked in, but were not offered help with bags. Just told where to find the room. The room had a lovely outlook across the garden and grounds at the back, but the decor was rather worn and dated and the room was so dark inside, which was a shame as it was a lovely sized room, and with a slick of paint could be stunning.
We asked where we could find somewhere to eat in the evening, as we wanted to try a local restaurant but we were strongly encouraged to eat in the hotel restaurant as there was apparently no where in the town to eat!! So we did. The menu was priced on the high side, (three courses averaging approx £70 each) and although nicely served, it really was nothing special, which was a shame.
We decided not to have breakfast, as again, that would set you back around £20 each! So although the room was well priced £90, the extras did add up.. would recommend the location, and it was nice to stay in a Chateau but they weren't particularly helpful.

I went with my partner and her parents to Chateau de la verie and found it to be pleasant.

The owners and staff are nice, the grounds are nice, the swimming pool is nice but very cold.

Tennis courts on site with racquet hire.

Breakfast was good, but we decided not to eat in the restaurant.

Recommended.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2010

This August was the second stay at the Chateau de la Verie for myself and my wife....needless to say we will be returning again next year. It is little short of a gem amongst hotels, the setting is beautiful; the rooms are well appointed, yet retain the character of its past, the food is excellent and above all the welcome received on arrival is genuine and sets the standard for the whole experience.
We have stayed at many hotels in France and would rate La Verie well above anything else experienced there, many have been good, but with the personal attention and the quality throughout the hotel this one would rank at the top. One of the biggest differences is the attitude to you returning again, many hotels would improve there relationships with customers by having a small token of gratitude (Complimentary refreshments in the bedroom for instance) available on arrival, especially after a long road or air journey. I could name some lovely hotels in the UK that we have stayed in more than once that seem to take their customers for granted.
The food is excellent, we ate from the 39 euro menu and found the quality and presentation of a very high standard, the wine list is extensive and contains a fair selection of reasonably priced wines as well as the more expensive. On warm summer evenings you can take your meals on the terrace which is a lovely experience. The rooms contain a mix of the old and the new, the bed was excellent as was the flat screen TV and the free wifi, yet the majority of the furniture is more in keeping with the character of the Chateau. The bathroom was well appointed and spacious...just bigger towels please, my only criticism!!
The grounds are beautifully landscaped, with ponds, huge grassed areas and paths leading into the wooded areas, there is even a compond containing friendly goats and deer. The swimming pool at the side of the chateau is well kept and surrounded by comfortable loungers. The beaches of St Jean de Monts are only 20 minutes away, as is the craft village of Sallertaine, which is very beautiful and well worth a visit. The chateau is in the latest 'Logis de France' brochure as a three 'chimney' and three 'pot' hotel, this particular rating system does not do it justice when compared with other '3' rated hotels that we have visited in the Logis list, it does have the high quality dining mark as an addition.
I thoroughly recommend this hotel.
