As a group of eight enthousiastic golfers we stayed in Le Touquet for several days. Since we are all know to really appreciate good food, somebody in our club advised us that one night we should visit ‘Aux Pecheurs d‘ Etaples’ for dinner. So we did. Sadly however, compared to the restaurants we visited the nights before, this one looked a bit grubby and the various presented courses were disappointing, mediocre to put it mildly.
But then… two of us wanted a ‘Calvados’ (because it is a local drink) with their coffees.
When the bill arrived, it turned out that € 40,00 was charged for two small glasses of Calvados. More expensive than a full course of Fruits de Mer! Naturally we thought there had been a mistake but no, like a real magician the waiter did his trick and ‘hey, presto’, there was a list, showing the ridiculous price. Too bad this was a drinks list we were not shown when we ordered. It appeared that ‘Calvados’ came in a wide variety of prices and of course ‘our’ Calvados was by far the most expensive one on that list. We complained that we were never given a choice, but the only response was a lot of pulling up of shoulders, no answer whatsoever.
Of course we paid (a total of € 546,00), after which all staff seemed to disappear for good. When we left, they could all be seen in a faraway corner, smirking at us: ‘Mission accomplished, another bunch of stupid tourists ripped off’. Of course a few days later a polite e-mail was send to the management, but (as was to be expected) we never received any reaction.
Needless to say, we will not even go near that place again and will lock the car doors when driving past.
