“Bloody Marvellous - The best rental home we've come across in Andalusia”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012 for a stay in August 2012

I've stayed at El Tejar a few times now and each time it gets better. Clean and interesting rooms, great facilities including a really good kitchen, secluded pool and a real no-nonsense broadband connection. But above all the terraces where one can sit for hours with a glass of fino watching the view as the mountains across the valley change colour and almost, it seems, shape. The village, a walk down the hill away from this eyrie, is pretty good too, small shops stocking the essentials a couple of low key and friendly bars and some lovely people, especially the old folk who can give you a real picture of what the countryside is all about. A great place to stay for walking, relaxing and soaking up the atmosphere.

“This is the place to stay amongst the white villages of Andalucia”

Two weeks in the house, 5 days of which with two couples as guests, old, old friends, gave us Canadians who'd never been to the south of Spain a magical introduction to this hidden treasure region.

The house is an up and down, higgledy piggledy delight, well looked after by Paqui, who lives just down the hill. All three couples loved their eccentric rooms, up various staircases, each with magnificent views across the valley to the mountains on the other side. Breakfast tended to be on the cobble stone porch outside the kitchen, with jasmine overhead.

We fell in love with the spotlessly clean village of Montecarlo below, with its spring fed rivulets rushing down the streets, and friendly villagers toiling up and down. The most energetic of the couples climbed the pine forested mountain right behind the house, reaching views to the Moorish lookout at Zahara, miles to the west.

All the white villages, including Ronda, are within easy driving distance, and after a hot midday on the road, we were always happy to get back to the pool to cool off and snooze. Some of us were put in mind of the hanging gardens of Babylon, gazing up at the house from the pool, with its grape arbours and fig palms and persimmons, and the pine forest up beyond.

Cocktails on the wicker furnished terrasse would follow, and after that often a delicious, simple meal served by Paqui.

We got used to the roosters at the neighbors waking us in the morning, and one night we were awakened about 130 am by lovely Spanish singing and clapping that were part of some sort of celebration in the street just down the hill. No one minded, because we knew there would be a sleep by the pool the next afternoon.

Guy Hunter-Watts, the landlord, is a most obliging man, who went far more than the extra mile by e-mail to help us in every way. Thanks to him, we were tipped off to the annual three day fiesta of bullfights in Ronda, which, on the one day available in our itinerary, consisted of the traditional kind of fighting from horseback. Not to be missed, if you're there mid-September, and can appreciate the tragic drama.

“Perfect hideaway for honeymoon privacy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2011 for a stay in June 2011

Having forgotten the directions to the property in post wedding madness I called the owner who kindly directed us over the phone to the house, where we found a complementary bottle of cava to celebrate our marriage!! Being only 2 people in the large house 2 bedrooms were made up for us (one for sleeping other for siestas) all the bedrooms have stairs to access them some very steep....
The property was perfect for what we wanted, spacious, rustic, kitchen facilities for self catering wanted for nothing.
Close enough to Ronda for sightseeing, shopping. We managed trips out of the montains to Gibralter, Malaga and Grenada (an easy and cheap) 2 hour train journey from Ronda.

Liked best : the pool and surrounding patio area/ views from the bedroom and breakfast patio area. The amount of info given by the property's owner re the surrounding areas villages and restaurants.

Liked least : that the bedlinen wasn't changed, we used the second set from the other bedroom made up but it was 2 singles and we had a double.....only 1 room is a double the other 3 are singles.
