Owner description: The highest dune in Europe, a unique landscape with an incredible panoramic view over the ocean, forest and Arcachon Bay but also and more importantly, a living, natural space that needs to be looked after and protected. Since December 2007, the Syndicat Mixte de la Grande Dune du Pilat has been working to protect and preserve this national piece of heritage that belongs to us all. From the top of this giant (109 meters high, 2,7 kilometers long, 500 meters wide), you can see many remarkable sites of the region.

“One not to miss”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2014

True, the traffic was so congested that it took us an extra hour to reach Pilat. And the visitor's centre was so swarming with people that we could hardly push our way through. But the crowds noticeably thinned out once we reached the top of the first dune and headed along the ridge. Thereafter, the views were amazing, making our trip thoroughly memorable. The descent to the beach was steep but the waters ever so inviting. Further along the shore we came across a large group of paragliders who were making the most of the less popular dunes. All in all a great day out.

“Thank you all for the recommendation: so glad we went!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2014

The ONLY reason we went is the reviews on TripAdvisor. And even then, we did nto expect much. Boy, were we wrong! This is truly an amazing and unique experience.
We climbed it (lots of fun), and watched the sun set. Coming down was also lots of fun.
Strongly recommended!

Tip: Do not go to the fee entrance (by the way, the "30 minutes free" is a misleading hook, as there is no way you will spend less than 30 minutes); just drive past the camping entrance, and then there is free parkign on both sides of the road.

“You MUST visit this. Amazing, one off experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2014

Even though its "just a sand dune" you must visit this one. Its 15 minutes north of Biscarrosse Plage. Yes its just a sand dune. But what an achievement just to climb up it.

Its 115 m high and at a 45 degree angle. Some steps have been placed in some areas to make it easier. Me and my wife at 40 were well beaten by our young kids (6,8,11). When at the top you have a breathtaking view of both the Atlantic ocean and the forest. I would even say I would do it again.

The run back down is hairy and exhilarating.

“A must visit site”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2014

If you are in S.W. region of France, you must pay a visit there to experience the highest dune in Europe. We drove from Gujan Mestras to the site around 10 am, there was already the traffic jam even it was Monday, well in August ! Wear flip-flops when you walk towards the dune, take off them when you climb up. It is quite steep, It took us some time to reach the summit. It is very fun for every step because the sand sink when you struggle to balance yourself. The surface of the sand is hot, but your feet would feel the cool sand when they sink deep. Quite a sensation ! Once on top, the view is wonderful. One side is the forest, another side the Acachon bay. Children can go down to the sea shore to play while parents catch their breath by lying on the sand. Hat and sunscreen are recommended. Water bottle is a must. When we came down, we saw many young people rolling down. It is pretty fun, but somewhat dangerous. Anyway, it is absolutely a must visit site in Bordeaux area.
