“Gone glory but great panorama - poor service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2013

We arrived for a few days here in August. Despite quite a number of positive reviews, hotel did not live up to expectations. The rooms are overall very decent and the views over the lake is amazing. Get a room on the first floor and you will have a large balcony overlooking lake Lugano. The rest of the hotel, including service and friendliness of the staff I would rate as average. Clearly a top-notch place 10 years ago, the family hotel seems to have not moved forward in the last 15 years. We are pretty relaxed travellers but service is extremely slow (often we waited at the reception for 15 minutes without anyone showing up), and smiles hard to come by. The breakfast offered is poor at best. All in all it is a good location near lugano, but slightly overpriced for the service and state of the hotel.

Room Tip: Room on first floor with lake view

Thank you for your Review. We are very sorry that you didn't get the Service you expected. I must say that my wife and I were absent (on Family Business) at the time. I know, this is no excuse, but maybe our staff suffered from the amount of work they had, having two persons less helping with the daily workload.
We are running our Hotel in the second Generation and we invested over 2,5 Billion CHF in the last 10 years to stay up to date. So I hope/can't think that our glory has gone. Our Hotel is surely more competitive than 15 years ago. We would love to prove it to you and offer you therefore a free stay for one night.

We've stayed in much nicer places in the area, but with the dollar being so weak against the franc it just seemed insane to pay such prices. I had asked for a room on the lake side since I had read about the road noise for the rooms on that side. We were given a corner room which definitely has positives and minuses. Positive: gorgeous view and lots of light. Since it's so hot and there's no a/c it gave extra ventilation. However, it also had said road noise. Nothing that ambien didn't take care of but it was still annoying. And yes we had mosquitos as well, but that's not the hotel's fault. Room was on smallish side but extremely clean and stylish. (modern) bathroom was very nice. There was also a small balcony, but our neighbor was a chain smoker and the wind was in the wrong direction for us which made it unpleasant.

The best thing about the hotel is the restaurant. The food was fantastic. The server not so much. Very surly. Was not attentive at all. Wine glasses would stay empty. Then he got upset when you poured yourself. Well don't walk by 3 times and ignore us! We were only one of two tables at the time!! There were also several tables later on in the evening that smoked which was annoying.

I will say that it was by far the easiest hotel we've ever found on a trip. Just off the autobahn, and follow the signs.

Thank you for your Review. I could see that you are used to 4**** Hotels but the strong Swiss Franc made you choose a 3*** one.
2012/13 were difficult years for us as our Hotel rocketed into 4**** pice Levels for EU and USA customers, without us raising our Prices.
Anyway, I promise that we are trying our best to satisfy all our customers.

My family wanted to visit Swiss Miniatur in Melide, just outside Lugano. Having an infant, wanted to avoid 8 hours of to and fro travel and booked this hotel for a night.

The view is just amazing if you have selected a lake-view room. The hotel is family-run, very polite and friendly people. Room was small but clean. There were mosquitos at night. We had breakfast which was decenf though choices were limited.

I found it expensive for its qualities but would recommend short stays just for the view.

I'm sorry about the absurd value gain the Swiss Franc had in 2012/13. Unfortunately we could do much about our Prices in € and US$ except for keeping them the same since 2011.

We just came back from a lovely holiday during which we stayed in this amazing family run hotel. The room was exceptionally well furnished, completely new and had a big flat screen tv. The location is fantastic and unlike anything that I have ever experienced with a scenery that is breathtaking. The hotel is quite and relaxing and the staff do everything to make you feel as comfortable as possible. One of the things that I particularly liked was the new massage area around their fantastic pool which is right on the lake front. The food at the restaurant was impeccable: Italian and Swiss dishes, a stunning lake view and a sweet, musky home brewed red wine made us feel really relaxed. Besides, Melide is only 6km from Lugano city centre and can be easily reached from the north and the south thanks to the motorway and excellent train connection only 1 km from the Hotel Riviera. The motorway also provides easy access to Como city centre and Milan city centre. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and will to all of my friends at home.

Room Tip: choose new themed room (1st or 2nd floor) !!

....A nicer escape at this value for money you can not get anywhere, except maybe in some remote areas up in Alaska, but here we have a million dollar view in a homely famliy run Hotel right on the lake. A rare thing in today's confused, overpriced and distorted Hotel market. The more you know about Hotels, the more you traveled the world across cultures one realizes, Less is More and this is the true art to discover. I am not at all impressed by so called unrealistic 7 star hotels that cost so much that you can never find sleep at those inflated prices. The Riviera is a rare remnant of classic down to earth Swiss Hotel tradition at its best, beautifully nestled in to a section of the lake. All this comes at a price that is almost related to a typo. And the best of all, the family who runs the place is omni present. The Swiss Hoteliers Jan and his lovely wife, Aanna are both well traveled and can tell you all about the best dive spots in Asia or exciting peaks to climb in Tibet. Next to the local lay of land sights to discover.
Their Restaurant is delicious, again at prices fair to the value. And then there is the one million dollar lake view, picture perfect. Swiss Hotel at its best, go try it out, its a must. Why: Because its simply honest, a rare breed those days within the inbred, twisted and most times inflated Hospitality scene. Almost forgot, reportedly George Clooney chilled on the terrace enjoying a glass of red, he parked his Harley outside and then continued to his home on Lake Como in Italy, only an iron seven away across the border. PS: Only one request please, a Queen size bed in number 12 :-)

Room Tip: Take "my" room, number 12, great lake view and a large terrace to simply relax and enjoy a...

we stayed here at the end of June 2011 for three nights, we had a nice , clean room overlooking Lake Lugano. The Hotel is located a stone throw from Lugano, in the town of MELIDE. The staff is very pleasant, the room was in good order, be sure you have your breakfast on the terrace overlooking the lake and the mountain scenery. The breakfast buffet is plentiful. From here it's a short drive either into Lugano or further south to the town of Marcote. You will enjoy this area of beautiful Switzerland

Stayed just one day and night at this hotel. Had a room with nice view of the lake. There was a little bit of traffic (local only) on the road that runs just behind the hotel, but it was bearable. You don't hear or see the nearby motorway, luckily. Hotel has a sun-bathing terasse built on the lakeshore, and a small swimming pool. Comfort was ok and price adequate. Breakfast on the terasse on waterfront, quite relaxing. hotel has no car park of its own, and if the few public car parks are occupied, one has to park about 200 m away. Staff friendly and helpfull, German speaking.
