“Disappointing hospitality experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2012 via mobile

This hotel should have everything to please. The location, the rooms, the potential is there. It however shows you why service and hospitality management is crucial for creating satisfied customers. The room lacked the correct soap and shampoo bottles you can expect when you pay 370CHF per night. The reception was empty from personel 85% of the time we passed by. Once we did figure out who was a guest and who was hotelpersonel we realized the clients where more helpful when asking questions. On the second evening of our three day stay we where sitting in the bar waiting for someone to light the candle until I went to an empty table where there where two candles where burning already. This is a help-yourself hotel. The personel is not smiling. Never ask you if you had a good night at breakfast. Move your key around the tables when you have chosen your seat because they want to reorganize. They eat in the bar in front of the clients. Sit down and smoke while working and talking with visiting friends. There is no management. No person seemed to be responsible for anything. The owner should hire a senior service person.
I cannot recommend this place and it is sad since it should be able to be a wonderfull place. Is the owner interesetd in selling? I might find a buyer.

Buongiorno Per S.

It's a pitty you did perceived our little place as such a nightmare and I am sorry you did not like us. However, if you would have read the statement on our website, you would have known that our reception is not occupied but organized by the waiting staff. You could have found out, that there is a lot to help yourself with, all clearly declared and reasons explained on our website, like for example the self service complimentary coffee & cake in the afternoon, which works perfectly for most of our guests. Our place is a place one should be able to move completely free from any formalities as if it was yours, including lighting a candle that has been blown out by the wind or pour your wine if you do not want to wait a waiter to do it for you.

You also describe us as being pretty chaotic and indeed, we are not organised with stiff quality controlling schemes or a complex hierarchy; our organizational structure has more of a family than an enterprise, but again, you could have found out before you booked. When nobody has smiled at you, I would have to appologize, but I can truly not immagine that all our staff has been unfriendly with you just because to you there is a lack of management and responsibility.

We do explicitly declare our philosophy on our website, giving very detailed info about ourselfs, our commitment, our motivation and - more important still - also about every single room: you know what you get if you take your time to read what we say. And, sorry to say this, but we also declare that you should not come to us if you are looking for stiff formal behaviour and for staff who smiles on order, bowing down to the floor automatically like a pavlov's dogs. We smile when there is reason to smile and normally there is lots of reasons to, but when barked at, after a while our staff barks back...

It is also part of the concept and our belief to let the crew eat its dinner in the restaurant before it officially opens; we do so from 17:30 to 18:00, before the restaurant, bar and lounge open at 18:30. Our staff is also allowed to have their coffee breaks in the public areas, exactly because we consider ourselfs quite as a family and as a family we have dinner together, we have our espresso and our cigi together and we also might have a chat together in the afternoon, gathering half of the 20 crew on one large table on the terrace during closing hours of the restaurant. But, you will not see any staff member taking a break and smoking a cigi in public areas when the place is open to the public; they usually cross the street and smoke under the arches by the kiosk. And, as we think of ourselfs as a famliy, we think all of its members need to see for whom they are cleaning the rooms, for whom they are cooking, for whom they are working and to know who are our guests and vice versa.

I can only appologize for the fact you have not been happy with us, but as I did many times on this platform I have to say this: inform yourself before you book. I mean, you get upset, because you do not consider shampoos from hydro basics (which is a very common and renowned brand in hotel cosmetics...) as not adequate for a room that costs 370.- per night, no matter if there was also a jacuzzi (including bath salts), a very spacious shower with your own private turkish bath, a 140 cm hd-tv and the yamaha surround system, not to speak of the free minibar, an espresso machine and - in the room you had booked - 60 square meters of very nice furniture and finishings equal to a four star hotel standard, at least...

The location of the hotel is very nice right at the lake with great views, perfect for sunny lazy days. The service and staff are nice but average, personnel sometimes was not sure about stuff, advised wrongly or had to wait for other personnel to know what to to. Breakfast buffet is nice but gets boring if you are staying more than just one or two days. The restaurant is of excellent quality with a good variety (main focus on seafood) of dishes including some faboulus specialities. There are better places to stay from a hotel perspective but just for the food we would return any time.

We absolutely loved Dellago. The location is magical, right on the lake, with views over the water and onto the tree covered hills. Though I arrived there stressed from work, I felt instantly relaxed and at peace. The whole concept of the hotel is wonderful: It's beautiful, special and very personal. Everything has this special, very personal touch. Everything looks very stylish, but it is far from being pretentious or stiff. We really felt like we had been invited into someone's (very stylish) home. I loved that in the afternoon, guests can use the restaurant and terrace, though it is closed to the public, and get free coffee, cake and soft drinks. Our room "art & deco" was beautiful and we absolutely loved the big balcony with a daybed, overlooking the water. And the food is to die for. I will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Make sure you check out the different rooms on the website, they are all very different, though they...

First of all, this hotel has a great location, directly on the lake with stunning views. I had the 'Sand and Dunes' room, with a balcony overlooking Lago di Lugano, which was great. The room is nearly 10 years old, and needs some renovation, but the bed was good. Breakfast was delicious. I had lunch on the terrace, in the company of some Italian families, which is always a good sign. Staff was very friendly, serving me in German, English and Italian. If you want to go to Lugano: the train station is just a 10 minutes walk, and a 7 minutes train ride to Lugano Central.

Room Tip: Definitely choose a room on the lake side. They're more expensive, but the view is stunning

We loved our room "coffee and cream" so much, that we wanted to stay there the whole day! The hotel and the room have such a good ambiance, that you feel relaxed and just great!
Breakfast buffet had a fantastic choice and homemade fresh food. Also the seafoodrestaurant was excellent! We can really recommend the hotel!

Room Tip: The room "Coffee and cream" was perfect!

It was their website that appealed to us and the hotel lived up to expectation. We loved the relaxed atmosphere and the room was comfortable and warm (it was January). The food was great and the staff attentive without being obtrusive.

Coming here quite often with friends, because it is simply good, the food, especially the Thai curry or the tuna steak, the dessert is delighting,f.e. Jack in the box, a great wine selection, our favorite is Creation from SA,and service is friendly and professional. We love to come in summer, because they got the terrace and a lounge right by the lake with parking possibility for boats. It's a nice ambient, with nice audience without being too much, but chilling and relaxing.Open lunch time too.Positive to mention:they got a summer and winter menu,so variation is guaranteed. It's pricey, but worth.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Dellago was built as a small family hotel around 1907 and has since seen many concepts & transformations, but it has never been completely restructurated: this place has style and patina.as a holiday hotel, there is not enough space, as a design hotel we are much too improvised and for families we are far from being suitable, but for a relaxing city escape in jeans and chucks it's absolutely gorgeous. 21 simple or stylish, basic and luxurious, tiny and huge but always surprising rooms, an excellent fish and seafood restaurant, cool sound, wacky people and a lake lounge where your feet sometimes literally get wet are all perfect reasons to forget about the daily hassle for a couple of precious moments. ... more   less
