“Not to be missed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2013

An unprepossessing building which we would have driven past had our hosts not recommended it. Anyway, out the back is a terrace with lovely views where they serve Michelin-starred standard food at very reasonable prices. The atmosphere was nice and relaxed. The service friendly and professional. The food and wine pairings where exceptional. Tasting menu della tradzione (seven wines, seven courses) highly recommended.

“Overblown Italian”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2013 via mobile

We were travelling around the Chieti region of Abruzzo, had heard of this establishment, so had to visit. Service was offhand, food was ok-ish, but was left with the feeling that the kitchen was content to rest on its well publicised laurels. Pretentious to a degree, my wife was presented with "a little pouffe" on which to rest her handbag. Lunch was 120€ with a caraffe of house plonk and coffee, and was quite unremarkable.
Plus points for a good quality olive oil!

“Great experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2013

Peppino Turani and his family provided my wife and me with a great experience. Two days and nights of great hospitality and great food in a spectacular setting. And all of this was delivered at great value. Peppino is a host in the truest sense. The restaurant provides great Abruzzi food with wonderful wine pairings in an atmosphere that cannot do anything but please. Anyone who visits Italy and doesn't make time for Villa Maiella is making a mistake. Ask Mario Batali!

“Surprising”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2013

Absolutely surprising. Finally someone who knows how to treat Abruzzo's gifts. We opted for a 'menù della tradizione'. The menu can be found in the Restaurant's website. The 'pallotte cace e ove' (cheese&egg-balls) were perfectly handmade. Unfortunately something went wrong during the cooking, and the dish had a disappointing burning taste. Also the 'cordicelle al ragù del povero', a specific type of pasta with an egg and tomato sauce, had a sufficiently strong taste but at the same time exceptionally delicate for being a ragù. The sommelier paired the dish with a disappointing cerasuolo, the 'Lapis' of Sarchese Dora, which almost managed to spoil the elegance of the ragù; the 'cordicelle' were perfectly cooked. A special remark is reserved to the spinaches accompanying the lamb (nothing special), which were not overcooked at all. The dessert, the 'Semifreddo al Parrozzo', was standard patisserie.

The atmosphere in the restaurant was quite groomy; also the interior design might look a bit eccessive to a demanding eye. But nothing unpleasant or plainly tasteless.

I strongly recommend 'Villa Maiella' to anyone interested in a traditional but charming dinner.

“everything but the inside”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

well...there is no need to confirm how delicious would be the food at this restaurant.
Mr. Peppino Tinari and his wife got several international prices besides one Micheline star
Food is simply amazing, the lust of real and typical regional tastes
Everything, from ravioli with cheese or lamb, from azafran to cakes, everything is delicious, sending you on cloud #9.
Wine cellar is full of prestigious wines, and Nicola, the sommelier, is exceptional in suggesting the perfect "water" to drink combined to each meal
View from the terrace is breathtaking.
What a pity for the furniture of the restaurant...it reminds of an old 80s restaurant...
Price: better not to talk about it...but, if you're looking for a Micheline starred hotel, there's no complain
