“Lovely small hotel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

We stayed in the hotel la grava for two nights and definitely enjoyed our stay.

PROS:

1. Fantastic food! All of the food was very good but MUST haves include the hazelnut pudding ( creamy chocolate middle) and the hotel's own marmalade.

2. Warm, friendly room. The room was lovely and well presented. Quiet, and the room itself was quite big. The quality of sleep was excellent and the beds were very comfortable. Luxury bathroom :)

3. Friendly and helpful staff. The staff were always keen to help and went out of their way to make sure that our experience was special.

CONS

1. Location, location, location. The hotel lies in the sleepy old town of el Morell and lacks any life whatsoever. However the biggest thing was the fact that next to the hotel is a MASSIVE oil refinery which is very unpleasant to the eye. I truly cannot believe that this has hardly come up on this page. That said, it didn't make much impact on our enjoyable trip and looks surprising good at night with its twinkling lights.

Room Tip: Go for rooms on a higher floor as there is less noise

I really mean it! The hotel is a delight. Warm welcome, helpful staff, clean and well-presented rooms. The wifi is first class. There is a small, but very pretty pool, pleasantly shaded and alfresco eating possibilities. There is secure on-site parking. The breakfast was of excellent quality, albeit served too late by beginning at 09.00 hrs. The village of El Morell is quiet and sleep was not affected despite being given a room over-looking the street. So with all these pluses, why only a 3-blob grade? The place has two huge draw-backs:
1. Location: there is nothing of interest in El Morell and the centre of Tarragona is over 20 minutes away by car. Parking when you get there is neither easy nor cheap. If one is visiting Tarragona, this hotel is simply not a good base.
2. Restaurant: the hotel's own restaurant has a good reputation; I was looking forward to trying it. BUT it does not function on Mondays! Given the distance to Tarragona (El Morell offers no other possibilities on a Monday) this is poor. It is normal and acceptable in a country restaurant, but never in a quality hotel.
A great pity.

Room Tip: Never, never on a Monday....

It is far from any touristic route or spotlights, but it is worthy to visit that hotel and restaurant. Service is impeccable and food is out of this world. The selection of wines is absolutely amazing and all the product they use in the kitchen are cultivated by the family owners in a near by farm.

We spent only one night here, but the room was excellent, the food and drink were good, and the staff was friendly. It was a very good bargain. Spotlessly clean. Nice, big room. Amply parting on premises behind a locked gate. Although we did not use the swimming pool, it looked inviting.

We booked La Grava based on its wonderful food, in fact we changed our itinerary to fit around the restaurant being open as it's closed on a Monday. Unfortunately it was not what we were expecting at all, we found the staff very unhelpful, miserable and generally not welcoming. Our food was only standard with items on the menu unavailable, we were given no explanation of the menu and requests ignored. The hotel is a lovely building with beautiful clean rooms but staff that seem as if they don't want to be there. Such a shame as the stay was not cheap and l'm sure there are more welcoming hotels for the same price.

Arriving at La Grava is a great antidote to being hot, jeg-lagged and hungry. Hospitality could not have been more gracious, nor the food better. The breakfast though, is a "knock your socks off" feast that makes staying at La Grava even more worthwhile. The pool was a very welcome respite from the June heat. We would definitely return!

Room Tip: Although our room faced the street, it was quiet and cool.

We stayed at La Grava in mid-June 2012 and were extremely pleased with our decision to stay in this fully modernized, recently renovated small hotel in El Morrell located an easy 20 minute drive from the heart of Tarragona and the Roman ruins. Our room was quiet and beautifully decorated with a modern bathroom with all amenities. A lovely pool is tucked away in a private courtyard in the rear of the hotel as is the parking for guests. The 5 course breakfast which is included in the price was spectacular and it was a definite plus to be able to enjoy a leisurely lunch in the 5 star quality restaurant in the afternoon after our long flight from the US. A definite "must-stay-here" if you're touring the area and have a car with GPS!
