I stayed here for one night after walking 30 km from Pauls on the other side of Els Ports. I'd pre-booked for 73 euros, including breakfast. My room was a good size, very clean and modern, and had a nice terrace. I had a couple of swims in the (covered?? This is Spain!) decent-sized pool. Dinner was a buffet costing 15.50 euros and the drinks were reasonably priced. There were few other guests at the hotel and it was chronically understaffed - the waitress at dinner was also trying to serve at the bar, which was on the floor above!
When I first saw the hotel, I thought it must be a new school for the village or an industrial unit occupied by some hi-tec company. Somehow, modern and stylish (and lots of concrete) doesn't work for me in a rural setting. It would have been far better for the owners to have found a derelict historic property and restored it than to have built this (architectural) monstrosity on a green-field site next to a lovely old traditional village. I enjoyed my stay but still feel rather guilty about it; I tried to stay in the hostal/B&B in Arnes but it was closed (why?), so I was left with only the Vilar Rural to chose from. As I've said above, the hotel seems to be struggling and I wonder what legacy Arnes will be left with in a few years time.
