This was a Travelzoo voucher deal for one night with dinner bed and breakfast for £99. However we booked for a second night as we used to live in the area and wished to re-visit some old haunts. This was charged at £79 for bed and breakfast and we were asked to pay up front for this second night when we arrived.
Our room was No.10 at the very top of the building, it was spacious but very sparsely furnished and the sloping walls were a real hazard as the furniture was placed far too close to them and I banged my head quite badly, twice!
The linen and towels were clean and the mattresses (two single beds made up as a double) were comfortable.
Tea and coffee making facilities were provided but no bottled water. There were no facial tissues and crucially, no room telephone. To report to Reception it was necessary to go all the way back downstairs and ring the bell on the hatch as Reception was not permanently manned.
The en suite was the smallest that I have ever encountered, there was a leak under the basin and the remains of a loo roll, no new roll provided. It had a tiny shower cubicle with the loo hard up against it and the wash basin was incredibly small and set very low down such that even brushing ones' teeth was very awkward. The worst part was the pathetic trickle of water in the shower, my husband who has very short hair spent 10 minutes trying to get the shampoo rinsed out and so I didn't even bother to try washing mine.
Service ranged from dreadful to non existent and there was only one member of staff, Chris who looked after Reception who was friendly and pleasant.
We went down to the bar and were totally ignored by the barman who was busy gossiping loudly with two men at the bar. After 10 minutes waiting my husband went up and asked for our two glasses of sparkling wine which the barman grudgingly brought to the table.
We then when to the dining room and we then stood waiting to be seated for almost 15 minutes.
The "a la' Carte" menu was uninspiring to say the least but we both chose the asparagus with hen's egg starter, the asparagus was good but the eggs had been fried rock hard. No sooner had the starter plates been taken away than the main course arrived!
My husband had chosen to pay a £7.50 supplement for a fillet steak which he said was just "OK" and this was served with fries and a plain and dry salad which could have definitely done with some dressing.
I had ordered the slow cooked lamb with champ. The champ was pleasant enough but the lamb was very dry and was hard around the edges, and I left almost all of it.
Dessert was a pannacotta which was solid and without any "wobble" . The whole meal including the 15 minute wait to be seated took 40 minutes, hardly gourmet dining!
Breakfast next morning was a repeat of the night before as no one arrived to take our order until 10 minutes after we'd sat down and the breakfast itself was very poor with an undercooked tomato and sausage and once again served with rock hard fried eggs!
We decided against staying for the second night although we had already paid for it as we simply couldn't face doing without a proper shower and we were very upset at the dreadful food and complete lack of service.
The young man Chris on Reception was very apologetic and clearly didn't want to charge us the £23 in "extras" which was for two drinks and the £7.50 supplement for the steak as we had already paid £79 for the room and the breakfast that we wouldn't be eating.
However the owner, Martin, then turned up and made it perfectly clear that we were to be charged for the extras and that he really couldn't give a damn if we were unhappy as he already had our money, we were utterly disgusted by his attitude.
All in all the worst hotel experience that we have ever had and I am at a loss to understand some of the glowing reviews here!
I could not recommend any room at this hotel at all.
