“Great location at affordable price, good room size, great staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2010

The Metropole is located in the always excellent Brunswick St, a short tram ride to the city. Rooms are basic and sparsely furnished but, for the price, quite roomy.

The staff are excellent. I left my wallet in the taxi on the way to the Metropole and the desk staff immediately helped phone the cab company, allowed me to check in sans credit card etc. They really tried hard. So on the basis of service above an beyond I am making them my favorite budget option in a great location.

We love Metropole. Stayed here in March and are looking forward to returning in October. Originally we arrived at Metropole Hotel Apartments because we booked at a nearby Quest who did not honour our booking because they had lost the paperwork!
We were going to a wedding and wanted accommodation within walking distance to the venue in East Melbourne. Metropole ticked all the boxes - reception staff were very professional with a genuinely friendly smile, chechin procedure was quick, the room was great, very clean and spacious. When arriving at our room the thoughtful housekeeping staff had put the airconditioning on and it was wonderful as it was very hot outside and we were not in a good mood and upset due to having to move across from the other property. After cooling down in the pleasant surroundings we headed of to the venue making it with time to spare. Security parking was included in the rate and the lift went right through from the basement level up to our room.
Fitzroy is so close to the city we really enjoyed walking around. Lots of restaurants and coffee shops in Brunswick Street to suit all tastes and budgets. We had Sunday brunch at Madame Sou Sou outside in the sunshine. We can't wait for our return in October.

As my review title says, I was pleasantly surprised by the Metropole apartments. We only ended up here because the place we had booked into was overbooked so they canceled our reservation on us at the last moment. The photo's on their website look daggy and I was not really impressed at the thought of staying here but there aren't many other options in Fitzroy. We stayed in a standard 2 bedroom apartment on the ground floor. The place was immaculately clean and the kitchen and bathroom appear to have been recently redone so they were lovely and new. The living room was very spacious, as was the second room but the master bedroom was a bit compact. The only negative comment I would make is that the furnishings are a bit daggy (fashion wise), the lounge and the bedcovers in particular, which were all floral and a little bit "hello 1992". If they replaced these then this place would be absolutely outstanding. The location is also great. I love Brunswick Street and this would have to be the best place to stay if you want to be in this area.

I travelled here twice for business. The rooms were very comfortable and spacious. The location was great, nice to just walk down a few blocks to the centre of Brunswick street's great restaurants. Free wireless internet was great, except one stay I had a room up the back of the hotel, struggled to get any internet there. I wouldn't bother with breakfast there, the restaurant isn't even big enough to accomodate all their guests.

The tub chairs were torn and grubby. There was no air con in the bedroom and it was not possible to have the window open because of the split systems outside the window.
The breakfast in the adjoining cafe was very very average. We went down to Gertrude St the next day to The Charcoal Lane and had a beautiful breakfast. That was the type of breakfast that should have accompanied the hotel. Perhaps the owners could have a look at the menu. Never have Eggs Benedict. A folded slice of maybe 'ham' with a nice egg on top.
In our friends room the chairs were absolutely filthy and torn on the arms. I doubt if anyone would give them house room. At $199 per night I expected a lot more and would never recommend this hotel to anyone.

Studio room was very spacious and clean. Great kitchen and lounge area although TV not in the best position and not great TV reception. Quiet and peaceful place to stay. Most staff were friendly and helpful. Excellent position and facilities.

Second time I stayed at this hotel. My father has been very ill at St Vincents hospital. They have been great and couldn't have helped us anymore. Managed to extend our stay and when we finally checked out early there were no extra charges. All the staff made us very welcome over a very stressful time for my family.

  • Liked — Loaction and friendliness of staff
  • Disliked — The slow lift
