“Amazing food, great music, and laid-back vibe”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2012

My partner and I have eaten here dozens of times -- we go at least once a week for brekky which is always terrific, and occasionally for dinner and cocktails, which are also great.

I love that there's a bit of a Southern (USA) vibe to everything: cornbread with maple eggs and green tomato relish is my fave, and my partner (allergic to everything) orders a bunch of sides and raves about the rosemary mushrooms. The brekky sliders are another favourite of mine, served on pillowy-soft breadrolls, and with a smokey, spicy kick in the sauce -- the beans are an fun inclusion too. Serving sizes are terrific, too, and the meals are well priced for what you get.

There are great hip-hop, blues and soul-inspired beats playing whenever you are there, which gives the whole place a very laid-back vibe, whether you've just dragged yourself out of bed after a big night, or you want to relax before heading out for some shopping. The staff are always friendly.

Can highly recommend dinner and dessert here too, and the cocktails are inventive and fun.

“Best brunch. Ever.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2012

Great coffee, although in Melbourne that's almost a given. But the breakfast was outstanding, I'd go so far as to say the "fry-up" (which wasn't that fried) was the best breakfast/brunch we've ever had. Eggs and sausage were total perfection, kipfler potato hash must be tried to be believed. Salmon eggs weren't far perfect either

“Cute little cafe with a dollop of funk”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2011

Southpaw cafe - 189 Gertrude st Fitzroy North

On a cold and grey Chicago morning............well melbourne actually and thankfully while the morning was wet and dreary our dining experience more than compensated for it. Our friend from Perth was over to visit and had never been to melbourne before so we thought to take her to the bustling Brunswick area and grab some brunch.

We walked around and decided on Southpaw as they were playing some funky 70's afrobeat and the place looked cosy and warm. A lovely staff member (must remember names) welcomed us with a big smile and showed us to the last table available and enquired as to our drink of choice, he also advised of the specials for brunch and handed us some menus. The style of the place was funky and from the posters on the walls and windows it seemd like they had regular jazz, funk and blues nights, again evident by the music playing.

At a glance the menu looked pretty standard with your big breakfasts, eggs on toast, muesli albeit with some eclectic naming, Cat's Meow, The Remedy, Fry Up etc but the 'To Share' menu looked more than appealing, wild rabbit and ham hock terrine with rhubarb and ginger jelly, rolled stuffed pork belly with fennel salad, Charcuturie platter and a raft of other tasty tidbits BUT to our supreme disappointment the 'To Share' menu started at 3pm meaning we were 2hrs too early and despite pleading had to settle for a Black Benedict, Corn Bread with bacon/eggs and the pasta special of the day. The waiter was ever so apologetic and quick to add that we should come back some other time to sample the 'To Share' menu as he personally reccomended the pork belly. We added a glass of Spanish Pinot Grigio, a Vale Ale and an apple juice as he sauntered off to the kitchen.

The food came out quickly with a side order of politeness and smiles and we dug in to see how they were. The Black Benedict was great, eggs Bene on a muffin with two thick slabs of black pudding fried to perfection, the corn bread was fresh and light, drizzled in maple which complemented the tarty green tomato relish nicely and the pasta was a ravioli with what looked like a tomato sauce (apologies I didn't get to sample but our friend said it was lovely). Washing it all down with our beverages we sat and talked for a good hour before departing for a days shopping.

All in all the brunch menu was pretty standard although cooked very well but the 'To Share' menu sounded very tasty and with the impeccable service we received we will certainly go back at some stage to sample some good music and good food.

“Worth a Visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2011

The service here was friendly and efficient, the food is a little bit different from the average restaurant and well done. They have a cosy fireplace in an intimate dining area. We had the mini beef burgers as a starter, which were great.

Well worth a visit and we will be back!
