“Fantastic typically Italian in the most surprising place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2011

We loved this hotel - it took a little while to find it as you have to climb up the mountain which made for some fun driving! When you arrive you can hardly believe that a hotel would be in this little village up this mountain! The views were wonderful, room was very clean and traditional. The local's were nice people and there is a local bar about a minuted walk away were you can sit a watch over the mountain and down on the town of La Spezia. Would love to go back to this hotel - the restaurants food was delicious, just mind out for the grappa! The village/town had it's annual festival on whilst we were there and it was lovely to watch live music and people dancing in the moonlight!

Such a wonderfully pleasant place to stay. We were there for two nights and the weather was cold and pouring rain. Our room was still bright, warm and cozy. The decor is great - everything is newly renovated with blond wood. The rooms are bright with roomy baths. The staff was very pleasant. You can eat off the floor, it's so clean. And we had a real queen-size bed - it was not two twins pushed together. You can park for free in the town's parking lot, which is right above the hotel. There is not a whole lot to do in Varese Ligure, but it's a nice jumping-off point for other little towns around La Spezia.

We were in the Cinque Terre region for two days and decided to stay in La Spezia area since hotels and BBs in the CT were overpriced. We made a great choice.

Hotel Relais Al Convento is located in Vezzano Ligure, a little village at the end of a two-lane road that leads to the top of a hill. It is close to the CT, Portovenere, La Spezia, and other places on the Ligurian coast. Thee is not much in the village itself, however.

The hotel was spotless and beautiful. Each of the 20 rooms has a different decor and layout. I noticed that some were more spacious than others, but we didn't have a problem at all. Our room had a small balcony with outdoor seating overlooking their garden.

The bed was rather hard (common in Italy), and there were only two pillows. The two chairs in the room were made of wood and not comfortable for relaxing, but that was okay since we were only there at night.

There was a mini refrigerator, which was great, as well as a TV and safe. I don't remember any English channels, but if they had any, it would have been the BBC.

The staff was fantastic and polite. One of the gals carried my suitcase upstairs (There is no lift.) and, at my protest said, "Don't worry, signora. I am strong." What a sweetheart!

The breakfast was okay, and the offerings were not the best. Most of the stuff was pre-packaged or pre-made. However, they did make a good cappuccino.

The one big thing I would add to rate this hotel 5 stars is free wi-fi internet.

By the way. . . . There is one restaurant and one pizza place in Vezzano. The restaurant was attached to Al Convento and is very good.

Used this hotel as our base for touring Cinque Terre. What a great choice. It was hard to find originally as we thought it was in La Spezia. However, if using a GPS ensure you input the city as Vezzano Ligure which is only 10 minutes from La Spezia. The hotel is a small converted convent. The room was nice and roomy - not entirely modern looking but fits in with the plan of the hotel I presume. However the second night our air conditioner was not working. Staff was very helpful giving us suggestions on touring Cinque Terre as well as the area itself. The town itself is a medieval town with only a few steets but lots of winding and narrow alley ways which we explored a few times. Along with a good breakfast, there's a full service restaurant in the hotel itself which served a fantastic dinner with various items we had not seen in the other areas of Italy we had visited. Across the street was a really fun pizzeria with great pizzas.

We were travelling with our 14 month old toddler and this hotel was very accomodating. Our room which was a large attic room was beautifully appointed and absolutely private. The bathroom was spotless as was the whole room really. The hotel staff were very friendly and gave good tips on visiting not only 5T but Portovenere and other attractions nearby. Vezzano Ligure is a really tiny traditional Italian hilltop village, its not spectacular in beauty but it reflects real life which is a welcome change when travelling from one tourist spot to another. There is a wonderful osteria 3 steps away with great pizza's and awesome creme catalana! The breakfast at the hotel was very nice and the free Wifi a bonus.

It's a very nice place but hard to find and our GPS insisted on taking us up a tiny, steep back-road barely wide enough for one car. There's a much better road but on the way back the second day, we couldn't find the good road (the twisty mountain drive other reviewers refer to) and had to crawl up the narrow path again guided by our otherwise reliable GPS. Driving in Italy, by the way, has been a breeze so don't be intimidated, just make sure you have a good GPS.

The hotel and staff are really nice but it's a bit harder to get to Cinque Terre than we had thought - probably more difficult for us as we're traveling with a 7 month old baby. The restaurant downstairs is REALLY good. The best desserts we've had in Italy. Disappointingly, the breakfast was not very good at all. They do have wifi but you have to keep getting new user names and passwords from the front desk. It's a nonsensical system but it's free - at least I think it is, I may get a big surprise when we check out (we're in the middle of a three night stay).

Overall, it's a bit of a hassle but worth it, especially for the out-of-the way-ness, the unique village and the restaurant.

We stayed here based on the reviews from TA and were not disappointed. We were there in Nov 2009 and were in this part of Italy to see Cinque Terre. The drive up to Vezzano Ligure is mountainous and the road is full of lots of twists and turns but we’d driven the Italian Riviera that day so this drive presented no problems.

The village is straight out of a tourist brochure for Italian Villages, to say it’s gorgeous, quaint and beautiful is a gross understatement. The kicker is there are no tourists. This is not on the tourist map and a car is a must but staying in Vezzano Ligure will give you a real taste of Dolce Vita.

It is about 30 – 40 mins from Riomaggiore and you have to go through La Spezia to get there so you may hit peak hour morning traffic however even with this traffic the journey shouldn’t take longer than 40 mins.

There’s only 10 rooms in the Hotel and there was only one other room occupied whilst we were there so we had a choice of rooms. We chose the room on the ground floor opposite Reception as it had a red brick ceiling with a four poster king bed (wow). The downstairs restaurant was closed on the Monday (our first night) so we had dinner in the Pizzeria in town opposite the Hotel (30 metres from the Hotel) very nice and inexpensive. Breakfast each day was continental (no hot food) but most adequate and delicious. The Reception staff, especially Simona, were so curteous and helpful, it was such a nice change from the larger Hotels we normally stay in. Simona assisted us in getting out of paying an Auto-Strada fine, thus saving us about 53 Euros, grazie Simona J

We cannot recommend Al Convento highly enough, if you plan on visiting Cinque Terre, consider this Hotel but only if you have a car.
