“Family passion”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2012

Arrived with no booking and was treated to a visit like royalty. The Hotel is full of wonderful Italian stylish pieces of furniture. The staff are all interested in you, and the food, all homemade is served up by interested staff.
The waiter said to me 'do you need a menu, or will you trust me ?' I thought for a moment this was a way station to heaven.
yes it was a cold mid Feb, but the bill was jaw droppingly low, for food and accomodation.
What a find!

Stayed at the San Gerolamo for two nights in August 2011 en-route to picking up my daughter from her summer job in Lecco. Booked by internet using the hotel's website - no issues. Bedroom large and with almost just as large an en-suite - very clean and comfortable although a bit dated and more basic than the hotel's photographs indicate. Staff were friendly and helpful. As other reviewers have mentioned, the narrow road up the hill to the hotel is interesting ! so just as well my hire car was a lot smaller (narrower) than my own X5. The hotel is tucked away in a quiet residential area and well away from the lake but it has a peaceful charm. The outstanding feature of the hotel is however the quality of its food. As I was dining with friends on my second night, I had dinner in the hotel restaurant on the first. Not inexpensive however all three courses were superb (including a home -made dessert of my choice, baked there and then) and it ranked as the best meal of my 9 day trip. To put that in context, the other 7 days were in Tuscany where I generally ate in my favourite restaurants in and around Montespertoli yet the San Gerolamo's food was without doubt the most memorable. I would be more than happy to stay again, and to spend more time in Lecco.

Hotel located 10min drive in good traffic (or 1hr in peak traffic) from the Lecco boat for lake Como. The building is situated at the end of a steep very narrow road (vans can just scrape though) in Vercurago (not Lecco) with beautiful panoramic views of lake Garlate. The reception staff is very friendly, hospitable and knowledgable (when they are at the front desk). The rooms are clean and tidy and well equipped for a hotel of this standard (except for dirty little rugs placed here and there). I'm a light sleeper so the fact that the stairwell is made of granite and noise echoes through the building when people move about may annoy some guests but it didn't bother me too much. The hotel restaurant was not cheap, we paid mid E300 for four people for the a la carte restaurant and E129 for lunch in the trattoria. Both meals were faultless, the a la carte menu was one masterpiece after another of high cuisine... the trattoria menu was a little expensive for a trattoria menu but still very good. I'd definately reccommend this hotel to anyone wanting to visit lake Como and experience the highest standard of modern italian cuisine, just make sure you go with a small car and a large wallet.

We stayed for two nights in this hotel and were very impressed by the location (though the drive up the narrow street to the hotel was a little adventurous) and the great service. On the first night we dined at the hotel and the food was superb. Please order the steak - rare, you will NOT be disappointed. The gnochetti are also fabulous and the fish is excellent. Don't miss the view from the hill above the hotel including the monastery and the castle.

The "San Gerolamo" is actually located in Vercuraggo (a suburb of Lecco?) and not in Lecco itself.
You would probably need a car to reach it, although I am not aware of public transportation
arrangements in its vicinity - it might be convenient.

We stayed at this hotel in August 2009, after booking directly with the hotel by email.
No deposit was required at the time of booking.
We have understood from previous reviews that lake view is problematic from some of the rooms,
and had inquired about it specifically beforehand with the hotel.

In general I can recommend using Google Earth or similar applications
to check the exact location of the hotel and its surroundings.

Our flight landed around 23.00 in Milano, and we have notified the hotel
in advance that we will be arriving late (you are strongly advised to do the same).
It takes around and hour and a half from Milano to Lecco. GPS navigator
is recommended strongly, especially in the "fine-tuning" stage of arriving to the hotel.
As the previous reviews noted, driving the last 300 meters to the hotel
is quite (emm exciting would be the right word:))
The street leading to the hotel is VERY narrow. The hotel is located
in a really old part of town. Your car will barely fit in the driveway, but it WILL fit,
so take it easy, fold your side mirrors, take a deep breath and drive slowly.
Bear in mind that the street is a 2 way street,
so in case of traffic coming in opposite directions,
one of you would need to drive back couple of meters.

Asking for step by step, street-by street directions while in Vercuraggo, is also required.
Our GPS did a good job that day. Dont forget to write down the address before your flight though.:)
We have arrived at around 2 AM, and were greeted by the owner who was awaiting us,
and even helped carrying the heavy suitcase to the third floor
(yep - no elevators).

We booked the Junior Suite, which had a full lake view.
the Junior suite is fantastic and is big enough for a family of 4, with children sleeping downstairs.
The 2 rooms are quite large, and the suite deserves to receive full 5 stars.
There is a kitchennette.
The suite is recently renovated and everything is brand new,
and overall very pleasant place to stay in - and the view is excellent.

The only thing that surprised us was to find the suite to be double-leveled ,
with quite a steep staircase. We have made a note about it to the owner,
which has offered us a selection of other rooms, in the older part of the hotel.

We picked one of the double rooms, and subsequently found out we were charged for first night
as if it was a double room and not a junior suite - very good.

The rooms in the older part of the hotel are pleasant as well,
the views are partially obstructed by buldings, and there is less privacy.
The cleaning ladies in the morning make quite a lot of noise in the hallway,
so dont expect to be able to sleep very late.
You also get some amount of car noise from the street, because of the specifics of the location.

The breakfast was fantastic and we turned it into a slow start of the day, for the 4 nights we spent there
sometimes spending an hour or more in the lovely quiet little garden.
The selection of food is ample,
with several kinds of prosciutto, sausage, cheeses, bread ,dairy, vegetables, eggs and fruit,
along with dessert and plenty of choice to drink.
Dont miss the hot chocolate, and the coffee was very good as well.

After reading the ecstatic reviews, We were looking forward to trying the hotel restaurant during the evening,
but sadly it was closed due to "staff problems".

There is a nice pizzeria couple of meters down the road.

The staff was helpful and pleasant, we were given answers to most of our questions, they even helped us book tickets online
(in fact did it for us) to one of the Arena di Verona opera performances.
An unpleasant incident I mentioned earlier took place when we came back from Verona
(show delay and long drive back made us arrive at the hotel at 4.30 AM).

We were ringing the bell and calling the telephone number of the hotel for half an hour but there was no answer!
We had no choice but to sleep in the car (!) for 3 hours until the hotel had opened for the morning.
It turned out later that they were waiting for us to return by 2 AM, but then went to sleep, without notifying us,
there is actually an open passage to the hotel during the night by the side door.
I am not sure what exactly they were thinking to themselves
about how we are going to enter the hotel when we return, and apparently it didnt worry them too much.

We found the lack of possibility to contact the hotel staff during the night very unprofessional,
and have expected some sort of compensation for the unpleasant experience.
An apology was received , but no compencation offered - too bad.
For the first 2 nights we were in, there was no hot water. No compensation was offered for that as well.

It wouild take you about 20 minutes to reach the center of Lecco,
which is a pleasant little town with a nice lake promenade, and the old city.
You can dedicate an afternoon and an evening to strolling there and eating in one of the restaurants.

The pleasant - if a bit challenging at times - walk up to the ruined castle is a must.
Be sure to start at least at 18.00 in order to catch the sunset,
and try to bring a flashlight as you might be going down in the dark. Be sure to bring a camera:)

So overall nice setting and OK experience - slightly disturbed by the incidents I mentioned above.

My reccomendation below is a hesitant one, and I am not sure we will be back. We might.

With an extremely friendly staff and a gourmet chef, the hotel was one of the best experiences I ever had in Italy. 5 star treatment and apartment (ask for the top floor if you travel in a group) is worth every penny.

This hotel was excellent. The service was really very good and the staff were very helpful and informative. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Breakfast was excellent and plentiful. They served a variety of coffee, espresso, cappucino, latte for example as well as filter coffee and various teas and chocolate. The restaurant food was excellent and the wine list extensive. The hotel was in a charming square overlooking the lake with lovely views. We would go again and have already recommended this hotel to others. A real gem.
