“Noble accommodations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2012

We stayed here for two nights while on a wonderful VBT bike tour. The castle has been beautifully renovated to recreate the feeling of what it must have been like to be the guest of the original count and countess who lived here. The service is truly refined; we were treated like lords and ladies.

This hotel needs to be set in the context of one fact: Hedervary Castle was built in the 16th century, is one of Hungary's most important ancient monuments and is subject to all of the very necessary and appropriate conservation restrictions. When you stay here you are staying in an exceptional castle which is being preserved, conserved and improved through its use as a hotel. Any nmoney that you spend here contributes to the ongoing restoration programme.

Hedervar is an hour's drive from Vienna Airport, 10-15 minutes off the M1 motorway to Budapest. The castle is right in the middle of the village, set perhaps 75 yards back from the road in its own grounds. The village is very quiet and rural, full of small, brightly painted houses with beautifully tended gardens. The well-kept church has an 'onion' shaped spire and there are a handfful of shops and bars. In the evening everyone cycles; young and ancient, whole families, enjoying a bit of light exercise and some fresh air: these cyclists ren't lycra clad and the bikes are generally of the vintage variety. You get the impression of a community that has real pride in itself and its surroundings.

The castle, once the domain of a very important Hungarian family, has had a chequered history since the war. For several years from 1946 it served as a hospital for Russian troops, who stripped it of its fabulous collection of ancient books and coins. For several years after that it was pushed into service as an elementary school: the hunter's room on the first fkloor was used as gymnasium. In the early to mid 1990's it was used as an artist's hostel, where any artist, of whatever skill, could stay free of charge. When that became financially unsustainable they tried charging the artists but very few artists could afford to stay there so the whole project collapsed. The state still owns the building, but the current leaseholder has done an amazing job of restoration, a heroic labour of love after decades of misuse, dilapidation and abuse. Ask to see the cellar, formerly rendered with concrete, where each brick had to be stripped and cleaned by hand; the ladies boudoir with its amazing and beautiful trompe l'oiel, the private chapel, which is full of some even more amazing trompe l'oiels by the same artist.

The hotel is three storeys high and built around a square central courtyard, which is dominated by a huge plane tree which provides a leafy canopy and shade over the whole of the cobbled courtyard area. The 18 bedrooms are on all three floors, and connected by the original polished wooden floored corridors. The bedrooms are very adequate - some are quite large; and all are en suite, furnished with antiques and had satellite TV and Bose CD player / Radio. My en suite bathroom had bath and large overhead shower, good quality toiletries, shampoo and conditioner. The dining room is in the former library, next to the small bar. The food was locally inspired and unexpectedly good and all the staff were very friendly, efficient and helpful: several spoke excellent English. There is a small gym and a sauna in the first floor tower - both are free of charge. Later in the evening try some of the locally made fruit flavoured schnapps - powerful stuff - or a glass of the delicious local Tokaji dessert wine. There is a 'cigar room' where guests are allowed to smoke - the only area where this is possible in the hotel.

To the rear of the hotel is a large raised terrace with stone balustrade - perfect for drinks and refreshments, overlooking an 'English' style park and lawn which probably extends to a couple of acres, with majestic trees and a stream running down one side: it's a lovely tranquil spot, and there are benches and chairs for anyone who wants to just sit, read and relax. It is a beautiful setting. If you want to explore the surrounding countrsyide (the Danube is only 1km away) the hotel has cycles for guests to borrow. The countryside hereabouts is very flat and rural, the roads quiet and cyclists commonplace, so it's a pleasurable experience.

This is not the place for those expecting a grand hotel with five star luxury. You will enjoy it if you love history and old buildings, enjoy trying local regional food and drinks, and are looking for somewhere tranquil to chill out and recharge your batteries..

We had a lovely time staying in the castle. Lovely grounds and location.
Could do with some improvement with food and presentaion, gym and spa facilities.
Breakfast is ok, but get your diner elsewhere (not good value and you have to order by 8 and leave the restaurant by 9.
Beautiful interior and nicely decorated rooms. Visit the spa in the nearby Lipot. Go cycling, walking or fishing.

I've stayed at hundreds of hotels all over the world. I've never stayed at a hotel where nobody speaks english. The only languages understood are hungarian and german. As a result the staff speaks slowly and quite loud - in german. Not helping.

We stayed in Castle Héderváry for 3 nights, and loved the accommodation, food, and charming service. The rooms were very comfortable and clean. Breakfasts simple, and dinners excellent. The staff were very pleasant.
We would recommend the carriage ride.

Just back from a long weekend at this fabulous 16th century castle hotel. The staff were charming , the accomodation spacious and very comfortable and clean and the atmosphere of the castle was just wonderful. Ok so the sun shone every day but it was a magical place.
Just a few kilometers from the Danube river where you can use the castle's bicycles to pedal away a sunny afternoon along the river banks and through the beautiful surrounding villages.
The restaurant in the hotel offers some excellent cuisine and a great choice of very reasonably priced wines.
the nearby town of Gyor is lovely for a visit. Very picturesque and historical and Vienna airport is just about 40 minutes drive.
A great location for a relaxing romantic weekend - totally recommend it but perhaps not aplace to take the young kiddies. It's quite and tranquil and not much for the youngsters to do.

  • Liked — It's true historical appeal and charm
  • Disliked — having to leave to go home after a great long weekend

Stayed at Hedervar for a romantic 4 day weekend and had a wonderful time. Excellent location, only 85km from Vienna airport.

The castle has been tastefully renovated to provide an authentic antique feel without jeapordising any modern convenience. The room overlooked the maincured garden, had antique furniture and a flat screen Pioneer plasma.

The service is impecable and food very well presented with an interesting choice of excellent local wines. There were also bicycles available to explore the countryside and banks of the Danube in a relaxing fashion.

The bar area would benefit from more intimate lighting and comfier seating, however this did not stop us from enjoying a couple of glasses of wine there!

Overall an excellent hotel in a great location - thoroughly enjoyed it.

  • Liked — The glamorous building
  • Disliked — comfort of bar area
