“"A hidden gem"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2012

We departed from Asilo Masi feeling very privileged to have been "guests" at the magnificent home of our most gracious and charming host, Cristina.

Asilo Masi has been wonderfully renovated and decorated with beautiful antiques and family photos, creating a feeling of very comfortable luxury. Our spacious room had a fireplace, and a wonderful view of the church square. Although it was not yet seasonable to take a swim, the pool and garden looked exquisite.

We also found that the proximity to both Pisa and Lucca was great - about 30 minutes away. However, it is worth getting back to Asilo Masi at dinnertime - we enjoyed an outstanding dinner with Cristina (who also had a major hand in its preparation) and other guests around a large oval table set with candelabras. Cristina has a gift for making every guest feel special and welcome, which we most certainly did!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Asilo Masi offers 8 bedrooms (including 2 suites) in a restored historic mansion located in the historic centre of Capannoli, a village on the hills of Tuscany, very close to Andrea Bocelli's Teatro del Silenzio and perfectly located between Lucca, Pisa, Florence and the Chianti area. It's only 30 minutes drive from Pisa airport and is surrounded by thermal villages. Countess Cristina Gotti Lega combined her love for arts, food, luxury interiors and Tuscan hospitality when she redesigned the family building to transform it into the elegant house it is today. The facade was designed by Tuscan architect Luigi Bellincioni and the 18th century building was once used by the Gotti Lega family as a farm on their estate. It was then given to the nuns of Capannoli for them to use as a children's nursery ('Asilo' in Italian) until it was returned to the family. Handpicked antique furniture including Tuscan, European and Asian-inspired pieces by the Countess herself, artwork throughout (including in the rooms), extremely comfortable beds with luxury linen. Some rooms feature high-ceilings or original wooden beams, pin-drop silent and air-conditioned. All except one bathroom are en-suite, some with a separate walking shower and most feature custom-made tower racks. ... more   less
