“Superb hotel but disappointing restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2014

Weekend break for my wife's sixtieth birthday and had a wonderful time. Hotel accommodation excellent if a little cramped (river view rooms). Grounds and facilities excellent and staff very helpful and courteous. Restaurant menu rather limited although quality of food was excellent. Had choice of seven starters, 5 were fish of various varieties and the others vegetarian. Waitress didn't offer wine list and main courses were usual range seen on pub food menus although what is served was good quality. Experience was less than I expected of an otherwise superb hotel. Would visit again but eat elsewhere.

Dear Sir

We are incredibly sorry that you were disappointed with the selection of dishes on offer during your visit. We're grateful for your review as it has highlighted a short-fall in our service delivery.

Each Friday, we have a tradition of "Fish Friday" where we do serve several more fresh fish related dishes as well as our now well-known, home-caught crayfish from the river. We do this to ring the changes for guests staying over the weekend with a daily changing menu. It sounds like our staff didn't tell you the format for that evening. If you'd have dined on the Saturday evening too, you'd have found a more meat based menu but again depending on what's freshly available.

We're glad therefore that you enjoyed the dishes you did choose on Friday and in light of this, we do hope you'll come back. Chef, is always happy to cater to individual tastes and diets especially if he has some notice. You can always find several classic dishes such as the de Savary nursery dishes, "Sausage & Mash with onion gravy" or even a robust 28 day hung sirloin.

Whilst our reply doesn't negate the fact that you didn't get a proper explanation, we do hope it doesn't put you off an early return!

With best wishes
Adrienne Eastwood

This hotel really stood out for excellent service, the staff would do their utmost to help us out with any problems we faced. And yes, we did have some difficulties for them as we were a large wedding group, taking over the hotel for three days.
The setting couldn't have been more quintessentially English: thatched cottages gathered along the bank of a trout stream, acres of meadows for the children to run around and explore and good food served in the attached pub across the lane.
Genuinely good service; genuinely lovely place.

Room Tip: We had two adjoining rooms so that the 3 children could have their own room and feel special with th...

We stayed here on a two night break. We were greeted by the very friendly reception staff and instantly made to feel at home. The dinner that night in the restaurant was excellent.
We enjoyed playing croquet, tennis, and fishing!
Breakfast is also excellent...buffet style so ou can go at your own pace and a great selection.
Womderful relaxing stay and look forward to returning soon.

I stayed at this hotel for one night and I have to say it was probably the best hotel room I have stayed in! The staff were friendly. The room was so comfortable, there were fluffy bath robes and a hot water bottle on the bed to be used. The bed was so comfortable. I was especially impressed with the white company shower gels etc. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Arriving to the Old Swan & Minster Mill, is a trip back in time. You take a small road shaded by trees and you arrive to this little village with thatched cottages. The hotel is a collection of old cottages linked together, carefully restored to keep the essence and individuality but with the addition of all modern touches you like to have. Outside there are spaces for everyone taste.. You can to stroll around quietly, different outdoor games, rose garden, herbs garden, river, chicken, duck, children areas, quite areas…. On this warm evening we enjoyed a lovely meal outside on their large terrace.
We had 2 very different large rooms. One on the heave of a cottage and the other with patio and four-posters bed. Both were lovely, well appointed & pristine.
All staffs were attentive, pleasant, and chatty. This contributed to make our little stay even more enjoyable. The Housekeeper and team must have a very difficult job to keep all those areas in such an immaculate standard.
I have only one regret: not to have stayed longer to able us to enjoy fully this charming hotel. But there are so much to visit all around, it's a very hard decision to make!

We stayed here at the end of May for my wife's birthday and had a wonderful time. Our room in the Old Swan (where we recommend staying) was not the largest but certainly large enough with good size bathroom, Kings Size bed and settee. The carafe of sloe gin on arrival in our room was a very nice touch!
The Old Swan houses the bar and restaurant and we plumped for the weekend package which offered bed, breakfast and dinner together with a cream tea on the afternoon of arrival. The food was excellent and we can highly recommend the steaks, the ale pie, a beautifully moist risotto and to start the day the breakfasts were very nicely presented - the scrambled eggs were superb
The welcome we received from "Mamie" set the tone for the stay - most welcoming and quintissentially English! Step out of the Old Swan and enjoy the Cotswold Stone and Thatched roofs!
Check out the Minster Hall ruins just up the road

Room Tip: Rooms in the Old Swan are older and quainter and you are also in the same building for meals and dri...

The hotel rooms are inconsistent, we were in the 600 year old farm house with a large lovely breezy room over the kitchen. That was the only downfall, when the kitchen opened at 6a pots and pans banging about and the exhaust fan with kitchen strong smells very early in the day. Otherwise the room we had was hot but nice, no ac or fans but a wonderful evening breeze. The food was very yummy but extremely slow, like a hour and a half after ordering it would arrive. But always delicious, we were there four days and ate B and D each day because there was nothing else around and we had no car, we were there with a group. The grounds are lovely, many places to sit and just take in the countryside, the wind rush stream, the flowers are everywhere and look as. If they are wild and untamed so picturesque. Be sure and walk the grouns before you leave, as well as down the streets to the ruins of the Abbey and the old cemetery. One of the loveliest places anywhere and truly a picture of the English Cotswolds as one would expect at their finest.

Room Tip: Not back by the old barn, and be sure to ask if the room has windows as some did not and it can be q...
