“Lovely location.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2013

A charming place on the banks of the River Windrush.

I always enjoy my stays here.

A quiet corner of Oxfordshire, handy for Witney, the nearest town.

Also easy access to Oxford and the Cotswolds.

The selection of real ales is good.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms directly over the bar in the Old Swan, they can be noisy.

Thank you for your review and we are all delighted that you choose to return on a regular basis, since this helps to make our business a continued success. You're absolutely right that this is a quiet corner of the Cotswolds, yet many people are pleasantly surprised that it takes little more than 25 minutes to drive into Oxford or half an hour to visit Cheltenham, making us such a convenient location. As for the beer, we'll always choose to host local beers, alongside the many local suppliers of all our food.

We look forward to seeing you again soon.

This was an Anniversary to remember: I & my wife stayed 5- 7 Mar. The staffs where most cheerful, friendly & accommodating, On our arrival we where upgraded to the King Edward 111 suite. On our first evening: Charlotte was most helpful & gave us an excellent service @ dinner. The standard of food produced was excellent & well presented. On our second evening we recieved another excellent service from a young man & his waitress (forgotten the names, sorry) Champagne was offered: the dessert plates where decorated with "HAPPY ANNIVERSARY 06 03 2013" a nice touch. Over all a wonderful experience. I have over 40years expierience in the catering world & would have to rate this in my top 3 places to stay.

Room Tip: Although the suite was very very nice, we did find that guests' could be heard chatting from the...

Thank you for posting such an outstanding review and on behalf of the de Savary family we are delighted to be named as one of your "top 3" places to stay. Alex Polizzi, the "Hotel Inspector" gave us a similar tribute recently too.

It is the little touches, which make the difference and I can assure you that the kitchen and service staff take it upon themselves to achieve this, an indication of the pride and passion in their work. I am glad that you enjoyed your complimentary upgraded bedroom, which we recently renamed as "King Richard III" following the discovery of his remains in Leicester recently. There is a close connection between him and Minster Lovell, since he visited Francis Lovell on a regular basis.

Many congratulations on your anniversary and I look forward to welcoming you again soon.

Hadn't been to the Old Swan for some time since travelling over from Buckinghamshire for a night out or a day spent at the Minster having a picnic. Now having moved into the area we returned there for lunch and we delighted to see that it still had all of its old world charm, great service and really good lunch taken from the sandwich menu. It is a beautifully positioned, has a great garden, has pleasant walks around it and the staff were very friendly and well organised. It cannot quite be our local as we live 4 miles away but it will definitely remain on our ;often used' list in the future.

Thank you for returning to the Old Swan & Minster Mill and I am delighted that you enjoyed lunch and were able to reminisce from times gone by. The de Savary family took over the hotel in 2010 and since, have invested hugely, creating such an idyllic property that it truly represents quintessential England. The staff and I look forward to welcoming you to your "semi-local" on many more occasions.

Best wishes

We decided to escape London to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary in the country. It happened to be on a Sunday so we took advantage of the Sunday sleepover and upgraded the package to have a room in the Old Swan. Our room suited the age of the building with armchairs in an alcove overlooking the garden, magazines, bathrobes and slippers and we particularly enjoyed the sloe gin. We thought the hot water bottle at turn-down was a charming touch. Our only negatives were that the room was quite hot and we had a minor battle with the shower despite the instructions on the helpful information card provided.
Cream tea was delicious (what excellent scones!) and we also much enjoyed our dinner. The bread and tapenade to start was a a nice touch and each course was good, very substantial and well presented. Straightforward English food at its best. The staff in the restaurant, as throughout the hotel, were friendly and helpful. Breakfast, too, was good and plentiful.
The hotel is in a delightful location - we enjoyed a walk along the riverbank and would love to return in the summer when it isn't quite so muddy.
Altogether a memorable anniversary!

I would like to offer my congratulations to you on your 45th Anniversary and Lana de Savary asked that I pass on her best wishes too. Thank you for providing a lovely review and for helping others to learn about how our guests are treated. The Old Swan & Minster Mill is a truly special venue and with the added personal touches, we hope that our guests can enjoy hospitality at its best. Our chef, David, is delighted that you enjoyed his team's scones in particular.

We do hope that you will come back in the summer, when you will be able to explore our hotel's grounds and beyond much further.

Best wishes and congratulations

My husband and I spend another lovely short break at one of our favourite hotels. The location is fantastic. The rooms are lovely. Our preference are the rooms in the old swan. The food in the restaurant is always of a very high standard. Only disappointment this time was we had booked a table in the main restaurant only to be told when we went down for dinner that the restaurant was full because everybody staying had wanted to eat in the main restaurant . So we ate in the bar area which was very pleasant but not the same as eating in the main restaurant.

Thank you for writing a review and for returning to the Old Swan & Minster Mill.

Our success is determined by repeat guests and I am delighted that so many of our guests choose to return and often try out our other properties such as the Cary Arms in Devon or even Mount Cinnamon in Grenada. We're all linked through very high standards and the de Savary brand of personal and thoughtful hospitality but equally very different in our locations.

On your next visit we will ensure that you get your first choice when dining, so please do talk to Shelley in reservations so that we can organise your table for you.

With many thanks and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

This was the first time we had stayed at the Old Swan. We could not praise it enough. The staff were most helpful from the time we arrived to departing three days' later. There were very few people staying as it was mid-week but the whole restaurant menu was available to us. As my wife had had a recent knee replacement operation we were given a downstairs room - the Windrush. The bedroom was always warm and we liked the little touch of being given a 'complementary' hot water bottle. The other nice touch was the sloe gin. We hope to make a further visit towards the end of the year.

Room Tip: We could not fault he Windush room. Being on the ground floor and with the weather being dry, we wal...

Thank you for leaving a review and we were all very pleased you enjoyed your visit and better still are planning to return. In the summer, our gardens are outstanding, perfectly encapsulating the charm of Cotswolds England. The vibrant colours of autumn set against the backdrop of the River Windrush are exhilarating or maybe you might choose a Christmas break for the perfect quintessentially English festive house party - there are many options and we'll be delighted to welcome you back!

I do hope that your wife continues to recover well from her operation too.

With many thanks for taking the time to write a review and best wishes

My partner and I stayed at this hotel recently for an off-the-cuff weekend break. We had a very friendly welcome by the reception staff and were given lots of useful information about the local area. We stayed in the Minster Mill side in a small, but perfectly formed modern room looking out across the gardens onto the river Windrush. The fixtures, fittings and decoration at the hotel are first rate (shields, tapestries, suits of armour in the corridors; comfy chairs, roaring fires in the lounge areas) but what made the difference for us was the staff. Everyone we came across and spoke to seemed genuinely friendly (without being patronising or obsequious) and made us feel very welcome and that nothing was too much trouble i.e. they put their guests first (it sounds bizarre but not all hotels do in my experience).

We ate in the Old Swan restaurant on one of the evenings and were delighted with the quality and presentation of the food. Yes, the waiters and waitresses were generally on the younger side (why is that even relevant, surely it’s about the kind of service you receive?) but we found them to be helpful, efficient and (importantly to us) friendly.

In fact, we liked the place so much that having been shown around the entire establishment by the lovely Andrew (which he did at a moment’s notice), we decided we would like to get married in their grounds, so will be doing just that in the summer of 2014.

Lana de Savary, our Chairman, asked me to pass on her delight that you've chosen to get married at the Old Swan & Minster Mill and Amber de Savary will enjoy getting to know you between now and then, as she guides you through the planning of your wedding. Thank you for writing such a wonderful review and I was so pleased that everyone worked hard to make your visit such a success.

Don't forget you could continue the de Savary experience and honeymoon at Mount Cinnamon in Grenada!

I thank you for choosing our hotel and look forward to welcoming you on many occasions more.

Good luck and best wishes
